Crawford must control his temper

Joey Crawford's strength as an official can also be a weakness, as we saw in the episode involving Tim Duncan in Sunday's San Antonio Spurs-Dallas Mavericks game.

Crawford has a strong presence on the court, leaving no doubt as to who is in charge. That's a critical quality for a referee to possess because inevitably there will be bad calls made on the floor that will upset both teams.

The best officials acknowledge their errors without giving up their authority. Crawford's flaw is that he occasionally allows his court presence to turn into anger, as it did in the Duncan case.

By losing his temper and reportedly challenging Duncan to a fight, Crawford crossed the line that officials simply can't cross -- the one that lets personal issues get in the way of calling a good game. By challenging Duncan, and then tossing him from a game for something so trivial as sarcastic laughter from the bench, Crawford made a horrible mistake that he is now paying for.

I suspect that Crawford will get another chance from commissioner David Stern, but remember, he had a similar experience in the 2003 playoffs when he called four technical fouls and ejected Mavericks coach Don Nelson from a game against the Spurs. That incident -- like this one -- prompted a harsh reprimand from Stern, who considered Crawford's rant over the top. No doubt the commissioner is extremely upset over this (hence the suspension) and Crawford may have to prove to the league that he can control his temper.

My guess is that Stern will give Crawford a chance to come back next season. He is normally a terrific official and the league doesn't want to lose him. But if he doesn't learn to control his anger, Crawford, who comes from a family of baseball umpires, could be looking at strike three.

Tim Duncan is a very classy and honorable player. Temperamental refs like Crawford should be suspended for their misconduct. Tim Duncan is so dominant. The all around perfect player. GO SPURS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's about time that the league stood behind a player in a dispute about technicals. I have long believed that the refs thought that they could do whatever they wanted to with no recourse. Their are a couple of more refs that should take notice. They think they are bigger than the game.

Many a time I wanted to wring the neck of a player that pokes fun at myself and my officiating talents. It seems unfair that players can criticize officials calls but as officials, we need to show a greater restraint and a larger sense of professionalism and let that crap just go by. We are human and to officiate a fast moving game as basketball with very large, speedy and talented players is no easy task. We see the infraction and must make the call within 0.05 seconds after seeing it. Often times it is the correct call and this is without instant replay or a video judge assistance. Despite all the name calling and personal insults directed towards me, I still enjoy refereeing basketball. You just have to ignore the idiots that think that they are always right because as the man wearing the stripes and blowing the whistle, at the end of the night, you are always right.

I am not a spurs fan at all, but this official went too far. I'm glad to see that he got suspended, and I'm glad to see that Duncan's public lashing of the official didnt go un-noticed either. Duncan should have voiced his complaint to the NBA front office, and not the Media. All in all, everything went fair in my opinion.

I agree completely with comment one. In addition though, I would like to say that refs are human too. They can make mistakes too, not just with a bad call. Some players can't control their anger, but they don't make the front page of every basketball website. Why make such a big fuss over a ref? Treat it like you would for a player.

I agree, too many refs think that by calling techs and making confrontations they got the spotlight on them. Crawford is the worst one and has always been too quick to call techs. I applaud Stern for doing this because Duncan clearly did nothing to warrant an ejection and Crawford should be focused on the game instead of listening to Duncan laughing on the bench. Just embarrasing for NBA refs.

Let the players play the game. Games shouldn't be decided by referees. When I go to an NBA Game I don't go to see Joey Crawford.......duh?

So can all the teams hand pick the officials they want? I know the Pistons and Rasheed would like to take advantage of this new rule.

Twice is enough..........let Joey Crawford retire. Mr. Stern should retire Mr. Crawford. There are young guys that should be moved up to take Crawford's place in the lineup of officials. His seniority saved him once. He should go the way of Don Imus. Stern needs to preserve the game at every avenue. Joey Crawford has just provided Mr. Stern with an excuse to improve the game.

You know what the playoffs are screwed now. Joe Crawford is one of the, if not the, best referee in the NBA. Who would you rather have in Game 7 of the Finals? Crawford or Zach Zarba? Thought so. The NBA is just trying to protect its little stars.

Steve Javie should be the next referee to be suspended. I guess Duncan has more clout then Iverson or Pat Riley.

Any investigation into the bets placed on the game. If players can throw a game, so to can a ref and in the NBA where 2 techs gets a player out it's pretty easy to do. Just saying this looks fishy to me.

Tim Duncan is one of the best players on and off the court. Crawford did cross the line and sounds like he's got a history of bad temperament. Every single player in the NBA will complain about a call not going their way or against them. Referees job is to call the game fair and not take it personally. I do remember the 2003 game when Nelson and Harris got thrown out. That was uncalled for and Crawford was on rampage! I think the suspension was the right call. Way to go Stern!

It's about time Crawford got taken down a peg. He has the biggest ego of any official in the NBA -- and always plays such a hard-a** act on the court. Does he really think he can take Duncan? That's a fight I'd pay to see. I hope Stern forces him into retirement.

Tim Duncan and Joey Crawford, two of the best in basketbal. One a referee the other a player, each one dependent on the other to earn a living. There should be nothing but mutual respect for each other. No one is ever always wrong or right, and each made a bad error of judgement. Would it be too much to expect that each could swallow his pride, apologize to the other and forget the nonsense. They would only grow in our (the fans) eyes if they did. Meanwhile, shame on both.

Refs do throw games. They are in, by far, the easiest position to do so. Clock keepers govern more lines than anyone with their run-offs of several seconds keeping marginal lines "under" in the last quarter or their ability to stop a clock on a dime to promote the "over". NBA basketball is, I would say, the most easily corruptable game on the professional level. What about players like Steve Nash, who on more than one occasion has covered a spread with an irrelevant last second lay up when winning by 7 or 8 already. Or commited a pointless foul that sends a player to the stripe when it just so happens that the over/under is on the line. Hmmmmm. I do actually have countless evidence of this. My "everyone loves the ugly guy" conspiracy theory.
