Monday to Friday, The Basketball Jones look at the big games and story lines from the night before with a mix of in-depth analysis and irreverent humor. As always, questions and comments are appreciated.
On today's show, Evil Waldo and Joakim Melas tackle a few questions. Is Stephen Jackson(notes) a good fit in Cleveland? Can Ron Artest(notes) replace Trevor Ariza's(notes) L.A. production? And is Aaron Afflalo the new Dahntay Jones(notes)? All that, and some talk about this regurgitated "Play-In Tournament" idea.
Happy trick-or-treating, kids.

Moving along. SJax, while nothing great, is very good, more than just a shooter. His D is very good and he can really pass. Sure, he's a head case, but he really tries out there and wants to win badly. In Cle that works.
Yes, he has too many TOs. But look up his stats recently, last year let's say, and learn. He had a month stretch where he averaged something like 20+, 8+ and 6+, (pts, assts, rbs.) For the year his across the board avg's were among only like 5 players who managed them.
So, SJax would also be a distributor. The fact you failed to mention his D and passing.....says, yet again, a lot about the time zones. If SJax were in the east i doubt you'd have missed that, it's not fresh in your mind.

And, Ronny Turiaf is a big part of that trade. If I was Ferry, I wouldn't pull it off unless he was involved. Big Z was destroyed by Dwight in the postseason; Turiaf is a better answer at the defensive end. What they were desperately looking for in Ben Wallace, they would find in Ronny.

And Jackson played some of his best ball in Indiana. East coast people know him, just like they knew Ron Artest before he moved out West.
Jackson is the exact type of player the Cavs need. He can put up 20 any given night and does well guarding teams top scorers (handles Kobe about as well as any team can hope).
Plus, it gives the Cavs exactly what they need to compete against guys like Rashard Lewis and Rasheed Wallace, a 4 that can spread the floor and guard them.
What you say? Jackson is not a 4? You're right, but Jackson can play the 3 allowing LeBron to move to the 4 when playing aganist the Celtics (when they have Sheed at the 4) and against Lewis (when he's playing the 4 and not the 3) in Orlando. Jackson can go mono-y-mono on against any 3 in the East.
Cavs can go 'small' too with Jackson at the 2. Gives them the playmaker then need along with Lebron. If West can contribute as well the Cavs will be tough to beat (gave the Celtics a game with no Jackson or West).
If I'm the rest of the NBA, I'm really hoping Jackson does not end up in Cleveland, not what they have to give up (unless somehow it's West).

I agree about Turiaf, he'd be a great add.....but why give up Jackson and him just for an expiring? I mean, it would free up money, but I can understand why the Warriors aren't budging there.
I think in the end what could work is Jackson and Acie Law for Z......provided the Warriors agree to waive/buyout Z.
What does Z do for the Warriors anyway other than his big expring? I don't get why they would be opposed to a buyout and waiving him. They have bigs (if they don't move Turiaf in the deal), so he'll just sit on the bench. They'd save some dough too by buying him out.
Acie Law wasn't even active for the first game if I'm not mistaken. Doesn't hold much value in Cleveland (though he's a better ballhandler than boobie), but he does make the salaries match up so more of a throw-in. Cavs can toss there 2011 1st round pick too (this pick could be VERY valualbe....if Lebron leaves, that will be the year after when the Cavs could be a 30 win team).
It's not panic mode yet for the Cavs obviously, so makes sense to hold off a bit on a trade. I am interested in seeing how Z and Shaq can play together (it CAN work against certain opponents/lineups) before we trade Z.

No Jackson in Cleveland, never liked his attitude, they got enough to deal with Lebron and Shaq...
I'm all for a single-elimination play-in tourny, as mentioned the "hot team" will go into the playoffs. Season is already crazy long, what's another couple games? Would make things interesting at the end of the season. Don't care about the traveling, they get paid crazy money, sitting in first class for max 3 extra flights can't be that bad. More games/money for owners and NBA.

Other than that, I look forward to another season of TBJ

Come back when you understand basketball a bit more.
Cavs needed center to help guard Howard plain and simple.
And what did they 'give up' ? Wallace and Sasha....wow, stop the presses.

Warriors: Curry, Ellis (who i think they should trade as well!), Buike/Morrow, Randolph, Biedrins.... bench: Buike/Morrow, Ilgauskas, Watson, Law
nice trade for both teams
