Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Back once again is the incredible ... Ball Don't Lie's NBA previews, outlining offseason moves, projecting win totals, spinning tracks and much, much more. It's a fun, hot mess. Up next, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

2008-09 Record: 66-16, first place in Central Division
Head Coach/Resembles: Mike Brown/Grimace
Key Additions: Shaquille O'Neal(notes), Anthony Parker(notes), Leon Powe(notes), Jamario Moon(notes)
Key Losses: Joe Smith(notes), Ben Wallace(notes), Wally Szczerbiak(notes), Sasha Pavlovic(notes)

I'd rather not get too complicated with these things. I think you've noticed that with a few of these team previews.

That doesn't mean I haven't put in the work, that doesn't mean I wasn't watching games this summer, nearly every damn one of them last season, and writing non-stop during the offseason, prepping for 2009-10. That doesn't mean I'm not up, still thinking, still questioning, still trying.

But I'm still going to try and cut to the core of what to expect from these teams. No charts, on one end, but little emotion on the other. Straight up the kilt, the only way I know how.

And all I seem to be getting from the Cleveland Cavaliers is complications, when things seem to be so damn simple. This needless complexity emanates from the team itself, and from the people trying to gauge (as they've tried to gauge, since it became apparent that Shaquille O'Neal was going to become a Cavalier last summer) just how well they'll do in 2009-10.

I just don't get it.

If Mike Brown coaches properly and learns from his former assistant John Kuester, then the Cavaliers are on the right track. A championship track. Less worrisome, if LeBron James(notes) continues to ascend at the rate he's been ascending at since debuting in 2003 (with a slight drop-off in 2006-07, ironically the one year the Cavaliers made the Finals), then the Cavaliers are on track. And even if LeBron and Shaquille hold serve, playing at the rate they showcased last season (even if O'Neal falls off a touch, even), things will go swimmingly.

Not a guaranteed title. Not even a guaranteed move past the Celtics or Magic. But the team will be firing on all cylinders and giving itself the best chance to win. And with the offseason over, that's all you can ask for.

Why we're hemming and freaking over Shaq, I have no idea.

Few have been tougher on the Big Fella than I. I'm often sick of a lot of his me-first maneuvers, but you have to remember something very, very important:

Cavs land Shaq for Wallace, Pavlovic

They acquired the guy, try to stay with me here, for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic.

They gave up ... nothing.

So it's not as if he's throwing off chemistry. If things fall apart, give him all of Ben Wallace's 23 minutes per game from last season. I'm sure O'Neal will better Wallace's averages of three points and 6.5 rebounds. With a block. I'm sure Shaq, for all his idea-stealing ways, can top that. If he can't handle that? Move him to the end of the bench. Dump the guy. Because you gave up, if you've already forgotten, Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to get him. This is found money, dammit, so stop acting as if you just bought something with your life savings.

Because as tired and lanky (sure, it doesn't fit, but he is lanky) as Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes) is, he can still play, still play well, and smarter rotation choices from Brown can help to topple the Magic even if Shaq decides to quit midway through the season and start up his new show (The Cost is Correct!).

Honestly, with Anderson Varejao(notes) a year better and Mo Williams(notes) a year better and Anthony Parker on board and Jamario Moon helping out and James (James!) and even Leon Powe coming back ... whew. Options galore. I don't exactly trust Brown to be the one to figure everything out, but if he makes things simple, the Cavs are set.

And you know what?

I don't suspect that he'll have to make things too simple.

So James likes to score in the paint. And O'Neal does as well. Who cares? You think Shaq spends 24 seconds camped out underneath the rim? Well, there's something called a three-second call. He's not in the paint, save for a few dash-throughs. He's on the low block. And from Penny to Kobe to Dwyane Wade(notes) to even Amar'e Stoudemire(notes) (who loves to drive), I think it's been proven that Shaq is pretty adept at getting out of the way.

He may not prefer to get out of the way, at least not with the first two, but I've seen a lot of highlights from Penny, Kobe, D-Wade and Amar'e over the years. I can't recall them ever actually having to jump over O'Neal on their way to a high-percentage finish. Can you? Then can it.

I think this team still has matchup issues with Los Angeles and Orlando. There's a lot that has to go right. I haven't even touched on Delonte West(notes). And Brown, apologies for nearly equating his coaching foibles with someone's serious mental illness, is a big concern. He has to prove a lot this season.

But the team has depth, talent, and the best player in the game. And unless someone gets hurt ...

Prediction: 65-17

Kelly Dwyer

Will John Kuester's absence affect the Cavalier offense?

Yes. And this is a much bigger deal than the "will Shaq and LeBron work?" question. Kuester left Cleveland in the offseason to take the head-coaching reins in Detroit. Without his presence and play calling, the Cavs might be in trouble. Head coach Mike Brown has shown no capability in running a sound offense without Kuester. While Brown's growth and the presence of Mo Williams and Delonte West (Ed. note: hopefully) will help, Cleveland's offense will suffer unless Brown took copious notes last season. Brown's intelligence and work ethic give us reason to hope, but it is more than possible the Cavaliers will take a step back.

— KD, Yahoo! Sports 2009-10 NBA Preview magazine

Fear The Sword: "What are the team's biggest weaknesses? Back-court depth. What was considered a strength just a few weeks ago must be considered a weakness with the uncertainty surrounding Delonte West. In a perfect world, West would be the starting SG, with Moon, Parker, LeBron et al shuffling around the 2 and 3 spots. The Cavaliers could go small, with James at the 4, or go big with James at the 2 and Moon at the 3. West is also the Cavaliers best option at PG behind Mo Williams. Without West, the team has been forced to start Anthony Parker. He can do the job, no doubt, but it significantly weakens the bench. It also means that Daniel Gibson(notes) is once again forced to play the point, a position he isn't very comfortable with. There isn't any real timetable on West's return, but the hope is still he comes back full strength, both physically and mentally." [more]

Waiting For Next Year: "First and foremost is depth, but beyond that, the Cavaliers' biggest strength is their versatility. Everyone knows about LeBron's versatility, but Delonte West, Jamario Moon, Anderson Varejao, Anthony Parker and Mo Williams are all capable of playing multiple positions. If Mike Brown wants, he can go with a lineup of Shaq or Varejao at center, LeBron at the 4, Moon at the 3, Parker at the 2 and Mo or Delonte at the point. On the other hand, he can go with a lineup of Gibson, West, LeBron, Hickson, Shaq. Or anywhere in between. Having so many mix-and-match parts is going to give Mike Brown the chance to create strategic advantages over most teams. The question for the Cavaliers will be whether Mike Brown is able to actually come up with ways to achieve this." [more]

HOOPSWORLD: "There is always an adjustment new teammates have to make when Shaquille O'Neal changes location. However, history has shown that when a successful adjustment is made, Shaq's new team can win a title. LeBron James is the most physically talented player in the game, but it's title or bust this season in Cleveland. If the Cavs come up short, LeBron's future with the Cavs could very much be in doubt." [more]

Method Man, "Judgment Day"

This Cavs roster is the best it has been in LeBron's six seasons, just a year after Cleveland lead the NBA in wins. Shaq was acquired specifically to win an NBA title. With LeBron's free agency looming, this has to be the year. This isn't a team built to grow up together. It's built to win. Now.

— Trey Kerby, The Blowtorch

Cleveland made one of the biggest moves of the offseason so it naturally will impact the team's fantasy landscape. Shaq won't play much more than 30 minutes most nights and will get regular days off, but he'll command the ball any time he's on the court. The flipside of that equation is that he also will open things up for the team's perimeter players by commanding attention from defenses. Regardless of Shaq's presence, LeBron will still be among the league's usage leaders and another massive line is forthcoming. A possible uptick in efficiency would easily offset any loss of counting stats — as would another spike in free-throw percentage — and he shouldn't fall past second overall in almost any draft scenario this season.

Mo Williams isn't likely to repeat as the team's second-leading scorer, but a continued level of superb efficiency means he's still a very solid mid-round roto option. Delonte West's uncertain status has largely removed him from fantasy consideration and brought Anthony Parker into late-round consideration. Incremental production throughout his line means you should peg him as a "glue guy." Anderson Varejao will lose hustle stats to Shaq but could benefit from his deft passing out of the post — he's nothing more than a fringe option to start the season, however.

Orlando is more versatile than Cleveland. They will probably blow out the bad teams and struggle against the top 5 like last year. Imagine if Lebron got hurt? this team would be a lottery team

The Lakers are still gonna be a problem......but do the Magic really have that big of a mis-match advantage over the Cavs still?
Magic lost Lee and Hedo. Two guys that really hurt the Cavs. They brought in Carter and ryan Anderson (or Bass)....
Cavs don't fear Carter and have been able to control him. West actually played well on Hedo who is 3 inches taller than Carter. Parker can also handle Carter defensively just fine. No mis-match there.
Losing Hedo could have a domino effect. Does Anderosn or Bass start at the 4 moving Lewis to the 3? Or does Pietrus start at the 3 leaving Lewis at the 4?
Either way, Cavs gained bigtime here.
If Lewis is playing the 3, Lebron at 6'9" goes up against the 6'10" Lewis. No mismatch whatsoever since it's Lebron.
Varejeo can guard Anderson at the 4 just fine. He had issues with Lewis, but the Cavs again gain bigtime here.
In fact, I don't really see any mismatches....unless Nelson is considered one over Mo (both guys will struggle guarding each other I think) or Dwight over Shaq true mismatches. Dwight's obviously better than Shaq.....but shaq can at least contain him.
Cavs lost game 1 by 1 point and game 4 in overtime.....Shaq in either of those games means a win for hte Cavs and a trip to the Finals in 5 games.
I'm more worried about the Celtics than the Magic right now as a Cavs fan (and obviously the Lakers).

Go CAVS!!!!! And we miss you Delonte...This team needs you!
I am a bit worried, though, about Brown's offensive prowess now that Kuester is gone...I hope the coach did his homework over the summer!!!!

If Lebron got hurt this team would still win 40 games. They nearly beat the 76ers last year with every starter out.
The Magic have more depth? Gortat, Pietrius, Bass.....

This team will easily get in the playoffs if lebron got hurt that's why i'm not as worried... this team can hold their own if lebron needed to sit down. now the teams in the past no all would be lost if he got hurt. if he gets hurt all will not be lost as far as playoffs but championship... that's another story. so if he would get hurt lets hope he would be back at an oppourtune time. which he would because lebron is pretty tough and usually will play thru injuries and he heals fast. i.e. broken nose, ankle injury. he is pretty tough. this team is it! if they fall short of playoffs it will be nothing but failure there will not be another big man that can matchup with howard for a while so shaq is the best to it. now lets not forget about gasol or bynum. bynum will be handled but gasol is a tough matchup for shaq or Z lets hope and pray that AV will be able to flop enough for us to get by... but then there's kobe and o yea artest and odom... man the lakers are deep! let's hope Kloe K can keep everyone's mind off winning out there. or artest does something to get suspended!!!!!!!!!!

I think the Cavs made every possible right move over the summer.
Everyone talks about Shaq of course, but imagine, they got Jamario Moon, Anthony Parker, and LEON POWE.
    And they gave up . . . . hmm . . really nothing.
I think this will be a much improved team, and if POWE gets healthy by playoff time they will be very dangerous.
Jamario Moon and Parker will help defend Rashard Lewis and the Magic's other good shooters.
But it will be a great series, and the Celts are going to be awesome as well if KG is healthy.
And of course in the end, if they stay healthy, the Lakers will be sitting in the finals and darn awesome.
    Should be a fun year!

CAVS ARE GOING TO HAVE A SEASON OF WISHFUL THINKING AND HYPE ONCE AGAIN...And then we can only hope LeBRAT SHAMES THE CHOKEN ONE will shake the hands of the players of the teams that will rape them again in the playoffs.. Cleveland is going to have the worst time after this season since we all know LEBRAT SHAMES THE CHOKEN ONE will eventually sign up with NewYork or NewJersey(Brooklyn).. Its simpel really, ur highschool crush is cute, but damn Beyonce is HOT! LeBRAT will dump that highschool chick (cleveland) and go to Beyonce (NewYork) in a flash... And after a couple seasons of frustrations and wear and tear... LeBRAT will sucumb to injuries and viola!! Vince Carter/Tracy Mcgrady/Penny Hardaway part 2...

The players no one seems to know about...Jawad Williams, JJ Hickson, Darnell Jackson....the first two have been very good OFFENSIVELY when they have played in preseason....and with Delonte being not ready to come back just yet, I look for them to give their last roster spot to Coby Karl...the weakest offensive player on this team is Andy who will probably get 10 / 8.....not to mention that now the Cavs have enough depth to keep their starters fresh right through the playoffs....last year they averaged 100 on offense and 91 on defense...It's very easy to see this team giving up 100 / game but scoring 110-115 every night...that's if MB plays the youngsters so they can learn to defend without fouling on every other possession....at the very least, it looks like they've added about 7-8 points / game at center...and will probably out rebound 90% of the other teams....Looking very good as long as MB can figure out how to utilize ALL of the assets Danny Ferry has acquired for him

Oh, and Anderson Varejao sucks. He's just not a good player. Weak defense, poor rebounding, not much of a shot, really. Career average of 6.5 ppg and 6.6 rpg, and those aren't being deflated by one bad season. The dolt is good for 9 and 7 this year, tops. Nice going, Cavs, good work this offseason. Can't wait to see the Magic win the East.

@ Travis...sorry buddy boy but you are wrong...Varejao has improved every year in line with his increase in playing time...with the exception of his reb dropping by ONE last year...and since we're using averages...that's in 23 mpg...over the summer he averaged 13.4 / 8.6 for Brazil in helping them to the FIBA Americas championship...and there is no reason to expect his production to fall off on either end of the floor...he has a lower ppg because he takes mostly high % shots, clocking in at a bit above 50% career...sure he's no all-star and you have to remember he filled in at center when Z was resting...this will be his first year at PF (the position he played for Brazil) almost exclusively

Matt, You Cavs fans give way too much credit to Hedo. He failed when posting up Delonte with a 7 inch height advantage and a 40 lb weight advantage. He shot 1-11 in one of the games and 3-12 in another one. I think Carter will abuse Delonte and YES absolutely Jameer vs Mo is a mis-match as well as Dwight vs Shaq. If you're going to try and call those match-ups a push then I will call Barnes vs LeBron a push and we'd both be wrong. Depth? You're not scared of Gortat, Bass, Pietrus/Barnes, Anderson, JJ and J. Williams? We have a starting Center as our back-up, 2 starting PF's as our 2nd and 3rd string, a starting SF/6th man of the year front-runner as our back-up and a PG built for breaking down a defense and kicking out or finding D12 or Gortat under the rim. Pietrus is better at everything than Lee is with the only exception being that Lee made fewer bad decisions on offense where sometimes (rarely) Pietrus would try to take on the entire opposition. Lee was never a starter on the Magic until Pietrus went down with a fractured wrist. Lee is an awesome player and I wish we still had him but that doesn't change the fact that right now Pietrus is the superior player without question.
Since you brought up Courtney Lee and not Pietrus just as you brought up Hedo due to them no longer being on the Magic in some attempt to discredit the Magic's owning of the Cavs I'll break down the facts for you.
    Game 1 Lee 2-7 FG, 0-3 3-point, 1 rb, 2 ast, 1 TO, 1 steal, 1 blk, 4 points
    Game 1 Pietrus 5-10 FG, 2-5 3-point, 1-2 FT, 2 rb (1 offensive), 1 ast, 2 TO, 13 points
    Game 2 Lee 4-9 FG, 1-3 3-point, 2-2 FT, 1 ast, 3 TO 11 points
    Game 2 Pietrus 4-5 FG, 2-3 3-point, 1 rb (offensive), 1 TO, 2 blks 10 points
    Game 3 Lee 4-9 FG, 1-2 3-point, 4 rb (1 offensive), 3 ast, 1 TO, 3 steals, 9 points
    Game 3 Pietrus 4-9 FG, 1-5 3-point, 7-7 FT, 6 rb (3 offensive), 0 ast, 3 TO, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 16 points
    Game 4 Lee 2-6 FG, 1-4 3-point, 3 rb, 2 ast, 1 block, 5 points
    Game 4 Pietrus 5-13 FG, 5-11 - point, 2-4 FT, 3 rb, 2 ast, 2 to, 1 steal, 17 points
    Game 5 Lee 3-5 FG, 1-2 3-point, 2-3 FT, 1 rb, 1 ast, 2 TO, 3 steals, 9 points
    Game 5 Pietrus 4-6 FG, 3-5 3-point, 2-3 FT, 2 rb, 13 points
    Game 6 Lee 4-7 FG, 0-1 3-point, 4 rb, 1 ast, 1 TO, 8 points
    Game 6 Pietrus 5-10 FG, 4-7 3-point, 5 rb (2 offensive), 2 ast, 0 TO, 2 steals, 14 points
Lee - 44.2 FG percent. 26.7 3-point percent. 80 FT percent. 2.1 RPG, 1.7 Ast pg, 1.3 TO per game and 7.7 PPG in 31.5 Minutes per game.
Pietrus - 51.9 FG percent. 47.2 3-point percent. 75 FT percent. 3.17 RPG (including 1.2 Offensive per game), .83 Ast pg, 1.3 TO per game and 13.8 PPG in 28.5 minutes per game.
Numbers don't lie. Pietrus shot a much higher FG percent, nearly doubled Lee's 3-point percent, 5 percent less on FT but made 3 times as many FT's as Lee, over 1 RPG more than Lee, twice as many blocks as Lee, 1 less total steal than Lee and 6.1 points per game more than Lee in 18 less minutes than Lee.
You don't have to give credit where credit is due because those numbers say it all.

I don't see why anyone should fear the Celtics...they are old and slow. Does anyone think Rasheed is any different than Donyell Marshall at this point? Perkins is a waste and the only young talented player they have is Rondo who doesn't have any shooting range.
The Cavs HAVE to make the ECF Finals at the least with the lineup they have. The Cavs 2nd unit this year is probably better than LeBron's starting cast 4-5 years ago. (Gibson, Parker, Moon, Hickson/Powe, Ilgauskas)
The Cavs have size, they have power, they have large wing players, shooting at every postiion, a defensive-minded coach and the best player in the game. The only worries should be 1. Delonte West and 2. Chemistry
Orlando is obviously the team who could contend with the Cavs, but I'd keep an eye on Toronto and Atlanta.
