Ball Don't Lie - NBA

The Celtics and Rajon Rondo(notes) have reached an agreement in principle on a five-year contract extension, according to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports. (Boom!) The deal is rumored to be worth at least $55 million. Here's what they're saying out in the ether about the news ...

Jeff Clark, CelticsBlog: "Rondo is one of the best point guards in the game and he's a critical piece to the championship hopes of this current core group of veterans. Of course (Lord willing) he'll be playing long after this group retires and for the Celtics he represents a critical building block for the future. As long as Perk's body holds up, we've got a solid center and a top notch point guard to build a team around. This move also appears to lock the Celtics into a strategy that does not involve being players in the free agent market next year (except with the MLE). It also might make them more willing to take on short term salary via trade in order to upgrade the talent level of the team for the next 2 to 3 years. Hopefully it also marks the end of the Rondo trade rumors as well (at least for the near future). As a big Rondo fan, I've got a big smile on my face today. As a Celtics fan, I can only hope that whatever maturity issues he's had in the past remain in the past. It worked for Paul Pierce(notes) and it could work for Rondo. I hope they are both Celtics for life."

Zack Lowe, CelticsHub"An $11M/year deal will pay him the same as Monta Ellis(notes) and just a tad shy of Steve Nash's(notes) average salary ($11.7M) over the next three seasons. He'll get less than the max or near-max guys (Gil Arenas, Chris Paul(notes), Deron Williams(notes)), less than Baron Davis(notes) ($13M) and Tony Parker(notes) ($13.5-ishM) but considerably more than the next tier down-Devin Harris(notes) ($8.8M), Jose Calderon(notes) ($8.9M), Mo Williams(notes) ($8.9M) and T.J. Ford(notes) ($8.5M). (All salary figures here are the average of the next three seasons.) For someone who can't hit a jump shot, Rondo got a very, very fair deal. Congrats, Rajon. We'll enjoy watching through the middle of the next decade. In other words, this is about right, and, if anything, a bit of a reach for the C's. Just a bit."

Jay King, Celtics Town: "Out of everyone I know, I was probably the biggest advocate for the C's resigning Rondo. I'll just restate the facts, for those of you who haven't read any of my ramblings about Rondo before. Rondo is 23 years old. He's gotten immensely better each year, and has continued that trend into this season. He's as confident as players come, has already PG'ed a championship team, and seems to always rise to the occasion in big games. While there was some talk about Rondo being a pain in Doc Rivers' ass, there can be no denying that Rondo plays with unselfishness and poise rarely seen in the NBA ... especially for a player so young. As good as Rondo is now, he has the potential to be even better. Imagine him with a consistent jumper. If Rondo could consistently put it in the bucket from outside, nobody in the world would be able to guard him. He has the speed and handles to go by anybody, the vision to find open teammates, and the awareness to maintain a low turnover rate. With a jumper added to the mix? He could be scary, scary good. Already, his jumper looks way better. He finally has good form, and results might soon be on the way."

Tony Massarotti, Boston Globe: "These Celtics are far healthier and far more talented than the Celtics of last spring, and let the record show that Rondo has tailored his game to match. So far this season, Rondo has taken 23 shots in four games — during last spring's first-round series against the Bulls, he twice took more than 20 shots in a single game — and piled up more assists (47) than any player in the league. Only Steve Nash has more assists per game (42 in three games, an average of 14.0). Rondo has the best assist-to-turnover ratio of any starting point guard in basketball at the moment (5.22 to 1). For every turnover he has committed (nine), he has taken more than his share back (10 steals). Ultimately, isn't that all what a point guard is supposed to do? Run the offense and set up the scorers. Protect the ball. Play good defense. Score when necessary, which is almost never at this particular point in time. For the new-and-improved Celtics, Rondo has options the way the Tom Brady of 2007 had receivers, from Paul Pierce and Ray Allen(notes) to Kevin Garnett(notes), Rasheed Wallace(notes) and even Marquis Daniels(notes)."

Ken Berger, CBSSports: "Only a week ago, it seemed that Celtics president Danny Ainge and Rondo's agent, Bill Duffy, were too far apart to get a deal in place before the league-imposed deadline. As a matter of procedure, the Oct. 31 deadline was extended through Monday, the next official business day. Rondo, 24, has the Celtics off to a 4-0 start marked by the return of Kevin Garnett from knee surgery and the addition of free agent Rasheed Wallace. But for all the firepower presented by Wallace and the Big Three, Rondo makes the Celtics go. Ainge and coach Doc Rivers had publicly and privately challenged Rondo to become more of a leader during the offseason. The remarks prompted widespread speculation that Rondo would be traded rather than given an extension offer."

Marcel Mutoni, SLAM: "This comes as something of a surprise for anyone who has followed the Rondo saga in Boston since the Celtics were eliminated from the Playoffs last summer. His GM threw him under the bus following the classic Bulls series; the Celtics reportedly shopped him; it seemed a foregone conclusion that he was headed for free agency next summer; and now Rajon — clearly one of the best point guards in the NBA is locked up for the long-term in Beantown. Go figure."

Celtics will now go down hill..... But I do thank them for keeping Rondo, this will keep Boston away from any championship for a while.
    Bottom Line:
55 million.....AVERAGE PLAYER. Should of spend this amount for better players.

Good move getting Rondo, he is still getting better and smarter..he is 2nd in the league in assists #2, you must have a below average understanding of basketball...

So, most of you would rather par Baron Davis $13+ million to miss 3 pointers badly?? Rondo is doing everything the Celtics need.

Sorry but Rondo is far from an "average" player that some of you say he is. He is very unselfish out on the court. Hes a top steals guy, and a tops assist guy. Hes probably the best rebounding PG in the league aside from J. Kidd. This is a great move for the Celtics. Its not so good of news for the rest of the league. KEEP THE HATE GOING BECAUSE I LOVE IT!!!

Rondo is definitely top 5 in the league, if you don't believe it, take a look at what he did in the playoffs last season. He was holding the team together

overrated & now over-paid!! SMELLtics just padi too much for an average point guard!! All of you Smelltics fans don't know anything if you think that Ronda is a just an average point guard playing with 4 llstars (KG, Allen, Pierce & Sheed)
which makes him appear to be better than he really is! Let me simplify this for you Smelltics fans that don't get it. When Rondo has the ball everyone else was and is worrired about KG, Allen, Pierce(wheelchair boy) & now Sheed, so guess what he will & should score a lot & when has a good defender on him Gusee who he can pass the ball to Gay-G, Allen, Wheelchair Boy & Sheed, which most likely will result in an assist. If those guys are double teamed then someone else will be "wide" open, more assists. So in reality he is not that special just an average point that is reaping the benefits of playing with 4 allsatrs that's all!

i love how all you laker "fans" are trashing this...u really think rondo isn't a top 5 point man? really? after cp3, d-wil, derrick rose, who's better? Baron Davis, the man that can't stop jacking up conteted 3's? nash, and his pathetic defense? devin harris? tj ford? jose calderon? what a joke. your team isn't as good as everyone said, and this is how you laker fans are trying to relieve your stres

I think there are two big factors with Rondo.
    1) he's getting better every year - significantly, and is just about in the elite class (can't compare him with CP3, but aside from him I think Rondo is up there with the rest, largely because Nash's defense is so so, Kidd can't shoot either, etc.)
    2) BUT, alot of point guards would do well if they were playing with three hall of famers, all three of whom demand double teams. So its hard to assess him. Having said that he might improve on offense if he has the pressure to score so maybe it will be good for him in the future?

He may not be top 5 shooting wise. But even when Jason Kidd was in his prime. Was he a shooter? No. He made his living off of passing, defending, and rebounding. Exactly what Rondo is doing right now.

Rondo doesn't need to shoot on this Boston team. There are plenty of great shooters surrounding him. The occasional slash to the basket or break away layup is all he needs to do. Right now hes rebounding, defending, passing, and hes doing it all extraordinarily well. Hes doing everything the Celtics need him to do. The Celtics have plenty of scorers, he doesn't need to do that. Hes understanding his role alot more this year. Last night I saw him pass up a wide open layup, instead he dumped the ball off to Perkins for a fast break dunk. Thats unselfish right there. Thats Celtics basketball, and to be honest, thats championship basketball.

It seems to be a fair market deal or a little bit above fair market deal. If he develops a jump shot than he'll be worth his market deal. Of course their all over paid but in terms of how other players are paid he got an appropriate deal considering he is a top 5 point guard in the NBA.

Well put basketballfan88... Thats coming from a Pistons fan right there. I have to thank the Pistons a lot. For one they pretty much gave us Rasheed. And secondly they shipped off Mr. Big Shot. When my Celtics were bottom feeders a few years back, I was always rooting for the Pistons. They had the Wallace boys underneath, which was the best front line in basketball at the time. Defense is proven to win championships. The Pistons and the Spurs have both proven that over the years.

Rondo an average player? That is insane. First of all, he does a great job running the offense. He is a really great assist man, but he also is improving his shot and can penetrate and is an apt scorer when he needs to be (last year's postseason showed that). But, what really sets him apart is his rebounding and his defense. He is extremely disruptive on defense.....gets a lot of steals, and deflects a lot of passes. And, there is not another point guard in the league who rebounds as he does.
He and Perk are key to the transition into the era without the big 3.

Well put Nick L... Rondo and Perk are both only 24 years old. They are only getting better playing with all these veterans. People can say all they want about how the Celtics are done after the Big 3 retire. We know different. Rondo is a top 5 PG in this league and Perk is a top 10 starting center. Scary thing is, they are just so young. They will only improve. The Lakers only have one young decent player, Bynum. But this is a team game. Takes more than one good player to be great.

With the contract extension the Celtics have a long term commitment from some youth as half their team is older than most line ups in the NBA. This is a smart move for the team as they continue to infuse youth into this team instead of just acquiring a bunch of older players just to win a championship; at least with this move they are showing all Celtic fans that they are serios about keeping a winning team in place like the Celtic teams of old. Good Move Celtics..NOW LET US SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR US FANS DURING FREE AGANCY THIS YEAR.
