Johnson rides in the back, gets fuel, increases lead

Whatever slim chance the rest of the Chase for the Sprint Cup field had of making major inroads into Jimmie Johnson's points lead pretty much ran out of gas in the closing laps of Sunday's Amp Energy 500.

Mired at the back of the pack with only a handful of laps remaining, Johnson was almost certain his conservative strategy was about to backfire in a big way. Instead, just before NASCAR officials threw the red flag to extricate Ryan Newman from his destroyed car on Lap 184, Johnson was able to duck onto pit road for a splash of fuel.

Once again, it was crew chief Chad Knaus who came to the rescue.

"To be honest with you, the strategies completely backfired," Johnson said. "The only thing that saved our butts was Chad's decision for fuel. We were in big trouble—25th or something on that red flag—so all the credit goes to Chad and making us come down pit road and put some fuel in that thing. That was really the strategy that did it."

Fellow contenders Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon and Juan Montoya thought they had enough fuel for the remaining distance, but when the engines were refired, they found that wasn't the case. Up and down pit road, many crew chiefs realized the same thing, and several cars rolled or were pushed to their stalls for refueling. So when the race restarted, Johnson suddenly found himself in the top 10.

And when Kurt Busch was tapped by Brad Keselowski, setting off a 13-car melee on the frontstretch just as the white flag was unfurled—collecting Martin, Gordon and Montoya in the process—Johnson not only escaped Talladega's clutches, but piled up a bigger lead on his closest competition.

"I'm still in shock," Johnson said. "I can't believe that it worked out. I can't believe that many guys ran out of fuel and put themselves in that position. We almost stayed out."

Not bad for a guy who realized his wait-and-see strategy wasn't working to his satisfaction as the laps wound down.

"With about six [laps] to go, that's the last time I remember [Knaus] giving me a number of laps to go," Johnson said. "It dawned on me that we were in a bad position."

At that point, Johnson knew his options on the track were becoming extremely limited.

"They were three-wide in front of me, nowhere to go and you're just stuck," he said. "You hope that your lane moves forward a little bit. If it does, you pass four cars, five cars, that's about it.

"Then the inside lane or middle lane comes surging forward. And I knew I was in big trouble then. You could see guys pushing and shoving, and wondering if the big wreck was going to take place. But then I'm like, 'I can't be conservative now and try to miss it because if this thing goes green like it looks, we're in even more trouble.' "

At the finish, Johnson's focus was split between the points battle and making sure his Hendrick teammates were OK, especially Martin, whose car flipped before landing on its wheels.

"I do feel bad that the guys crashed coming to the finish and we've got wrecked cars," Johnson said. "I was really concerned for Mark, because when I looked in the mirror, I saw the No. 5 roof number tumbling and flipping and then it hit the outside fence. I hate to see things take place that way."

This was the race that Johnson and Knaus had targeted on their racing calendars well before the start of this year's Chase as a bellweather. On Friday, Johnson admitted he'd be happy to come away from Talladega Superspeedway with the same lead over Martin that he had coming in. Things couldn't have turned out much better, as he's now 184 points ahead of Martin, 192 in front of Gordon and 239 clear of Montoya with three races remaining. Still, Johnson isn't taking anything for granted.

"I'm not going to let up and lose focus to the job I need to do and allow the championship to be in the forefront of my mind until it's mathematically locked up," he said. "I can still lose 165 points next week if I miss a shift and blow the engine at the start of the Texas race and Mark has a perfect day.

"So with all that in mind, yes, I am feeling much better about things. I was so concerned about this race. I thought I was going to lose points with about three or four [laps] to go. So to have it turn around and leave with points, I didn't expect it.

"It's a very, very good situation we're in."

Get back to what made Nascar popular. Bring back the tracks where they actually race at. Get rid of the Calif.'s, Mich.'s Chicago's and other ride around tracks.

Gee, I guess the goal of winning the Chase should just go out the window so Jimmy can win one race. Now ya know why he's gonna win 4 in a row. Its called the "Big Picture."

What I want to know if how Nascar got all the drivers to drink the punch?? I understand JJ sitting in the back, too scared to run in the pack. But Smoke, Kyle and the rest of the so called bad boys... I figured they would test the waters??

Too late, Steve McQueen, I plan on spending all the rest of my Sundays doing something, anything but watching, the joke that Na$car has made out of this spectacle that they dare to call racing.PuLeeeeze! Even the old Hooters cup guys put on a better race than the crap I saw on Sunday.I can't believe anybody would ever buy a ticket to Talladega again after that "show".They will have to do something substantially different from now on to ever get me to watch anything Na$car ever again.

Too bad, I thought he was a "Racer"!

Yes I agree with most of the comments race fans have given, Johnson showed everyone that the only thing that matters to him and Chad is the 15 millions dollars ( or what ever they get ) that they get for winning the championship. I`am glad that Gordon drove his butt off and tried to gain points and so did Martin. I`am a Jeff Gordon fan and have been every since he entered the cup series. Johnson showed that money is more important than the sport of racing which makes him look like or is a coward.

Johnson and the"pit box brain" were smart and lucky as always. How many of the other Chasers jumped out of line and went to the very back at the start of the race?

No one is complaing so far about Tony, Newman, and the others.

POINTS LAP BY LAP EVERY LAP HIGH POINTS AT END OF RACE WINS.
RIDE IN THE BACK = NO POINTS
This is the only sport where last to score wins..........really imagine other sports if you can win by being the last to score.....................final score 55 to 1 ........but 1 wins because they scored last...........NOBODY WOULD WATCH.............LAP POINTS ONLY, LIVE AS THEY HAPPEN, NO BONUS POINTS FOR NOTHING...............Then I'd be interested in every lap as the happen.
Thank god for DVR I just blast through to the last 10 laps and sometimes yellows.......the thrill is gone Nascar

Brad sure wasn't midful of the chasers, he piled into Kurt, his future teamate and caused the last wreck that took out Martin Busch and others. Then today Penske reward Brad with a ride in the 12 for the rest of the season. Wonder how kurt feels about his future teamate?

Somebody PLEASE put Johnson into the wall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't want to see him hurt, but I would Like to see an actual competition for the the championship title...
I'd also like to see some real racing out there.....There might be 12 in "the Chase" but there is still a race going on, the other 31 drivers out there shouldn't have to "be mindful" of the Chasers, they just need to get out there and do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING they can to win!!!!

JJ is the sorriest piece of work I've ever seen. Hiding at the back of the field, letting the others race as they should, is just plain cowardly. This sport is dying........ It was good to see Mark Martin and Gordon still having at it out there. Very sad to see them get wrecked. Seeing that bozo, JJ with the stupid grin on his face after the race just about made me lose my lunch. Then they give him cudos for avoiding a wreck that he was in front of. Just how laim can this get. I recorded the race and watched parts of it after it ended. I'm glad I didn't waste my time on the whole race. I've been a strong fan for 50+ years but I think I'm finished. My dear old Dad is probably rolling in his grave if he knows what is happening to his favorite sport. JJ, why don't you just stay home for the rest of the season.....
The races will be more interesting without you.

As I said in an earlier post, NASCAR (France) has ruined the sport. After todays said imitation of a race, we might as well make it the Talladaga 100 mile race. The chase, COT, and the newest France have succeeded in making even Talladega a boring race. Another good chase for Johnson, the 10 race wonder.

Kudos to Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, and the rest of the chasers who actually "raced" today...you can hold your heads high and know that you went for it! As for Jimmy Johnson, seriously??? Letting everyone else do the work, while you jump in to take the prize is just wrong. How can you take pride in that? I'll watch the awards ceremony like I always do, but when it's your turn to speak, I plan to turn off the TV.

Johnson was smart to lay back, Talladega is broke, not the chase, not the racer. Want to fix the problem? Remove the plates and let the drivers race.

I've always liked Newman, his comments were right on the mark after his crash... all except one. He stated something about if you were there to see the crashes "go home"... it's sad he (whom I respect) is so far removed, of course the rednecks want the crash. They want 4 or 5 of them as long as "Jr" isn't in them.

It's time to fix 'dega.... throw the plates away and let them race. All the top drivers should boycott next year's races (both of them) and see if it gets anyone's attention.

jimmy johnson showed how bad this sport has become he's suppose to be the champion of this sport so instead of racing he rides in the back all day then picks the bones of the guys that raced all day and finishes in the top ten i wonder if petty, pearson, waltrip and others raced that way for there titles something needs to change in this sport before people find something else to do with there sundays.
