Kyle Busch crew chief thrown into fire right away

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—It didn’t take Dave Rogers long to face a huge decision as crew chief for the volatile Kyle Busch.

Rogers said it wasn’t much of a decision at all. He was sure Busch had enough fuel to stay in front to the finish Sunday in Texas, where Rogers made his debut atop the pit box for the No. 18 Toyota.

Rogers was wrong by three laps. That’s when Busch ran out of gas just as he was starting another trip around the 1 1/2 -mile high-banked oval. He sputtered through the backstretch and was passed by older brother Kurt Busch and quite a few others. Kyle Busch finished 11th.

“Welcome to the club, huh?” Rogers said.

Busch, known for his outbursts when things aren’t going well and mistakes are made, didn’t disagree with the decision to stay out because Rogers said they never really discussed it.

“I told him my plan was to stay out. He trusted me. It didn’t work,” Rogers said. “It’s discouraging. It’s hard for Kyle, and it’s hard for myself.”

Rogers replaced Steve Addington after an inconsistent season kept Busch out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Those points standings played a role in Rogers’ choice. He said it would have different if they had been racing for points.

“We really didn’t have anything to lose,” Rogers said. “If we would have pitted, the 2 car certainly would have beat us. Our only shot to win it was to stay out, so we gambled. Sometimes when you gamble, you lose.”

Rogers said he didn’t face the wrath of Busch, who disappeared without talking to reporters after losing despite leading 232 laps.

“He said, ‘We’re out of fuel’ and after the race he took his helmet off and went to his motor home and calmed down,” Rogers said. “I think he handled it well. You lead all these laps and we could have gone for the clean sweep this weekend, won all three in a row, deserved to win all three in a row and we get beat. It’s tough.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. joined Kyle Busch among a group of several trying to push their fuel to the limit. He ran out, too.

Earnhardt ended up stalled on pit road after creeping up the standings while others ahead of him pitted. He ended up 25ht.

STILL WINLESS: Carl Edwards’ oh-fer season continued.

The nine-time winner from a year ago was knocked out about halfway through the race when he pulled alongside Juan Pablo Montoya just before Montoya lost control and grazed Edwards, sending him into the wall.

Edwards took the optimistic outlook before the race when he said he preferred to view things as nine wins over two seasons rather than the big zero of 2009. He had the same rosy outlook after the wreck, too.

“I guess I’ll win the race home,” Edwards said. “I get to go home and see the wife. That’s a good thing.”

Montoya was hanging around the fringe of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, and got a boost when points leader Jimmie Johnson wrecked on Lap 3. His own wreck ruined a chance to gain significant ground.

“It was just really close racing,” said Montoya, who picked up three points on Johnson but dropped from fourth to sixth in the standings, 236 behind. “I know Carl has had a frustrating season and was just trying to get to the front. He just didn’t give me any room.”

The early departure was just another illustration of the stark difference between seasons for Edwards. Last year, he ran away with the fall Texas race for his second win in a row.

“It’s frustrating in general because I was having fun,” Edwards said.

MORE TRIBUTES: Fort Hood soldiers played a prominent role in NASCAR’s prerace ceremonies just 170 miles from the site of the massacre that left 13 dead at the Army post.

There were 40 Fort Hood soldiers displaying the huge American flag during the national anthem Sunday. The number was supposed to be 45, but five soldiers scheduled to attend were among the 29 injured in Thursday’s shootings, track officials said.

A moment of silence was observed for the fourth time during the weekend. The other observances came during the Nationwide and truck series races, and Sprint Cup qualifying.

A U.S. Army logo with the words “God Bless Our Fort Hood Troops” was pained on the infield grass Friday.

SPACE RACE: Space shuttle pilot Doug Hurley went for a different ride before Sunday’s race. Two, actually.

Hurley, who guided Endeavour in July, was inside the pace car, which was inside a Chinook helicopter that landed on the infield. He drove the car off the helicopter.

The Marine colonel is a season ticket-holder at Texas Motor Speedway. Greg Zipadelli, crew chief for Joey Logano, married into Hurley’s family, and Hurley attended his first race earlier this decade at Watkins Glen not far from where he grew up.

Since he’s based in Houston, Hurley decided to become a regular at the Texas track. He presented Zipadelli with a hat that went into space with him.

SPARK PLUGS: Sunday’s unofficial attendance was 167,000, the lowest in 18 races at Texas. Attendance figures have declined steadily the past couple of years. The previous low was 171,000 last fall. … Kurt Busch’s victory made a $1 million winner of Oklahoma school teacher Michael McGee. The 25-year-old from Broken Bow picked Busch in a random drawing of the 12 Chase drivers. McGee was chosen the Dickies American Worker of the Year, earning $50,000 and the shot at the bigger prize.

Kyle just Can't Understand Normal Thinking..thats why we hate him...in the old days guys spent years racing on Saturday nights, working on their own cars before they got a tastes of NASCAR...now these kids have mommy and daddy buy them their rides and thus have no respect for what it means to work your ass off. Punk, and pukes...no more, no less.

To all you bush haters. I love it . If the guy gets out of his car an goes too cool off. You bad mouth him. but if he stays out for an interview an some fool ask him how does it feel to run out of gas with two laps to go. an he says how in the -- do you think it feels. Then he,s in hot water. Ask Tony there was a time or two when a reporter jumped in his face with a mike and it was not a pretty sight. By the way about this dirty air. it seems to me if the 18 car gets back 10 or 12 spots it seems to go to the front whether it.s on the out side or the inside. So much for dirty air. I like to see him come to the fount I really like to see him in trucks, an listen to Hornaday.

I agree with Mark. Surprised we didn't see a slew of cautions to get JJ back up front.Kyle B. did a great job leading the race and controlling his temper. I don't blame him for getting back to the motorhome as soon as posible, Have you seen his "super babe" ?

Kyle Busch again shows NASCAR fans why he should not be the Sprint Cup Champion. Unlike Jimmy Johnson, the defending champion finishing 38th, who had a day far worse than Kyle, still showed great sportsmanship in post race interviews. Kyle who has no respect for the sport, his team members, or the fans, runs off like a spoiled child who had his candy taken away and refused to be interviewed. After Kyle didn't make the Chase, he blabbed his mouth off on how the next best thing for him to do was win as many of the remaining races left in 2009, and now he has nothing to say!

The one thing F1 has on NASCAR... they allow for the cars to be different...this cookie cutter bs that NASCAR is going for sucks...then they pull the 5 and 48 out a few weeks ago, and warn them their cars are too close to the edge of legal....that's what NASCAR used to be all about...pushing the edge of legal....rather in was Smokey Yunick building a car that was too small, or Junior Johnson running moonshine...NASCAR was founded on breaking the rules...now the kiss the ass of the Gov't, and guys like Yates suck because they can't "cheat" like they used to.

At least F1 lets the guys design different race cars for different tracks. And if NASCAR sells so many cars, how come GM and Dodge are haning on by a thread...if they solf cars, GM would have no issue, since they win more championships...but instead, it's Ford, Toyota, and Honda. All NASCAR sells is crap.

It seems like it is never montoya's fault. edwards was clear of him. i guess montoya thinks edwards should pull over for him. last i checked, both were in the chase, and at the time of the wreck, both on the lead lap. montoya has to develop some patience and not crash out at the halfway point.

as far as jeff gordon goes, i think he still has the ability to win championships, but steve latarte is a better cheerleader than crew chief. gordon's car never gets better during the race. maybe hendricks should shuffle latarte and knauss up for next season and see who wins, or offer zippadelli a ton of money to come over and be gordon's crew chief.

Its disgusting that anyone feels like they have to walk around Kyle Busch as if they are walking on eggshells. Someone needs to beat the sh*t out of him and give him a major attitude adjustment. Its hard to feel sympathy for Rogers when he knew how he was when he agreed to become his crew chief and try to work with him.

I see a pattern forming when Montoya is interviewed. It seems all of his answers regarding being in a wreck is, "he didn't give me room". It sounds to me that Montoya needs to look at himiself, because he believes that he is the victum. If you watch his racing, he causes most of those accidents. Where does it say that anybody has to give him any room? Three, four wide, you never see him back out, he just keeps forcing the issue and when trouble happens, they just didn't give him room. I used to have some respect for him, but, that is fading fast.

Juan Pablo Destroya does it again.
I did like his paint scheme though.
Kyle is a great driver and thats why I cant stand him.
Even though Jimmie is a team mate, Im tired of him too.
Gordon is alright and I dont like Tony either(see Kyle reason)
Robbie is like Pablo, tears up everything he gets in.
I guess bring on Danica to spice up ticket sales.
And my man Jr. 11th to 14th finish is not good.
    Somebody please tell him.

Brent Didnt Toyota just drop out of F1 racing, the reason being F1 doesnt sell cars unless you can afford a new Ferrari, also theres no market in the U.S for F1 racing. Soccer is by far a bigger world wide sport then the NFL but how many people in the U.S would turn off the Super Bowl to watch the world cup finals. Why dont you people post on a F1 board 99% of people where could care less how many viewers F1 has in Europe. And I have to agree with 127 if all the people who hate Cup racing and vowed never to watch it again didnt post here, there wouldnt be but a hand full of comments today!
