Kurt Busch wins at Texas, Johnson 38th after wreck

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—Jimmie Johnson sat in his car going nowhere for more than an hour, his NASCAR Sprint Cup lead shrinking with every passing lap.

While crew chief Chad Knaus and Co. were basically rebuilding the mangled mess that was his No. 48 Chevrolet after it was knocked into the wall on the third lap at Texas on Sunday, Johnson stayed inside the cockpit frustrated and replaying the accident in his head.

He knows the outcome could have been a lot worse.

Johnson did finish the race and is still the series point leader with two races to go in his push to become the first Sprint Cup driver to win four consecutive season championships.

“The first report Chad gave me wasn’t good. He thought we were going to have to put the car on the truck because it was so tore up,” Johnson said. “As time went on, I could see their spirits lift and I knew we could at least get back on track. I started to focus on things I needed to.”

Last in the 43-car field when he drove his rebuilt car back on the high-banked 1 1/2 -mile track on lap 115, Johnson climbed to 38th—his best possible finish considering the circumstances, and 129 laps behind winner Kurt Busch. Johnson’s points lead was intact, though it was slashed from 184 to 73 over Hendrick teammate Mark Martin, who finished fourth.

Busch won after he passed brother Kyle with 2 1/2 laps to go. The younger Busch’s quest to become the first driver to win all three of NASCAR’s national series on the same weekend ended when his No. 18 Toyota ran out of fuel.

“It’s bittersweet to beat Kyle. He was going for the sweep. We took it away from him,” said Kurt Busch, who led six times for 89 laps while also running second behind his brother much of the race. “I don’t think he could have picked a better driver to lose to. … It wasn’t quite the door-to-door, nose-to-tail, fender-banging green-whiste-checkered like we would have hoped, but it came down to strategy.”

Kyle Busch, who had already won the Nationwide and Camping World Truck races at Texas, had led 232 laps Sunday until he suddenly slowed on the backstreet on lap 332 of 334.

Dave Rogers, who made his debut as Busch’s crew chief in the Sprint Cup, said they thought they had enough fuel to finish the race and described the driver as “frustrated.” Busch, who wound up 11th, didn’t talk to reporters.

Kurt Busch’s 20th career victory came with an average speed of 147.137 mph and by a nearly 26-second margin over second-place Denny Hamlin. Matt Kenseth was third.

Coming out of Turn 2 on the third lap, Sam Hornish got loose after being tapped by David Reutimann. Hornish made contact with Johnson, who scraped the outside wall. It looked as if Johnson might save his car before he was hit again by Hornish, then slammed into the inside wall.

“By the time that I knew that I was hit, I was already sideways,” Hornish said. “I was just trying to correct it and not get into the 48. Obviously, you don’t ever want to detract from the championship when you’re not really even involved in it.”

Johnson can still clinch next week at Phoenix if he boosts his lead to 195 points. Or can win the title by averaging a fourth-place finish the last two races, fifth if he leads at least one lap in both races.

Still, things have gotten a little more interesting.

“His game has now changed. They have to definitely look over their shoulder at whose behind him because the other guys feel he’s vulnerable. Who knows,” Kurt Busch said. “That’s why we race the races. We don’t do it on paper.”

Jeff Gordon, another Hendrick driver who is third in points, finished 13th after avoiding serious problems of his own. He cut his points deficit to Johnson from 192 to 112, though he lost ground on Martin.

“A total missed opportunity that completely got away from us,” said Gordon, who in April won at Texas for the first time.

On lap 175, in the same troublesome turn where Johnson got knocked around, Gordon spun himself when trying to avoid the colliding cars of Juan Pablo Montoya and Carl Edwards. He then went into the pit before it was open and incurred a penalty, but that just made him restart at the back of the field, where he was still 18th—the same as when the accident occurred.

Johnson needed only a couple of laps to get out of last place and eventually clicked off enough laps to get to 38th, just ahead of Edwards and Hornish, who missed only two laps after the contact with Johnson. But Hornish spun out in the same spot on lap 87 and slammed hard into the wall without hitting anybody else.

“It was definitely not the day we wanted. … I’m still in great position. We’re going to dust ourselves off,” Johnson said. “There’s not much we can do, we were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

@LongIslandRaceFan: typical fan failed to distinguish cheating from pushing the limits. People forget, oh wait...they're not racers lol People forget that when someone pushed the limits of the rule, he/she ends up expanding the rule to fellow competitor's advantage because they don't have to do it themselves. There was an article about this in NASCAR yahoo! sports that covers these facts after Mark Martin's and JJ's got impounded recently. Some people sticks to staying within the safe limits of the rule-that is absolutely fine with them. Guess who is winning the races, though?

I didnt think it was fare taht Ernhart Jr. had to suck. Tehy are making Jr. suck on purpus so tehy can write articles about does he suck or did he jist have a bad career. Maybe he wont suck next year because I do not wathc racing to see teh little fat mexcin win or come in top 10 all teh time while Jr. sucks. NASCAR already is terible becuase small track racing is better. Teh womin at teh small dirt tracks are drunker and hornier and NASCAR is just a joke to advertise sexual products for people who are sober and cant get it up. Real racing is for drunk horny people. NASCAR anymore is for yankees who konw all about spelling and educatin and people wiht desk jobs and old ladies.

JJ and Knaus cheaters? Maybe but you'd better have proof before accusing someone. I think they are just more prepared and attentive to detail than the competition. JJ is a great driver - very focused, no nonsense, calm and cool, does not panic. Knaus is demanding of his crew members, very well informed about everything involving the car or the race, extremely well prepared and organized, experienced and sharp as a tack. And both don't take unnecessary chances and do stupid things that can lose what they have built. Communication between them is excellent.

Tell me why he always seems to have the best car at the end of the race? Jeff Gordon struggles the whole race to get it right and he never seems to. I saw the pit guy turning a wrench in Gordon's back window, apparently a track bar adjustment, something like 10 turns. How can you be that far off? Sure enough the adjustments actually made it worse. The two drivers run the same equipment. Gordon is a four time champion so you know he can drive. Gordon is a partner in HMS and has a lifetime contract so I would think he has access to the entire HMS knowledge base. The difference? JG has not won a championship with LeTarte and JJ has won three, going on four, with Knaus. That is all you need to know about Chad Knaus.

It's interesting how everyone was calling Talladega the wild card race when it was Texas that tightened the ropes. Two races to go and only seventy points out? Forget what Fryer says, Martin has an excellent chance. He just needs to finish ahead of Johnson at Phoenix, and we've got a showdown in Miami.

And I'm actually glad for a change to see Kurt win and get that million dollars. If you want to talk about a true underdog driver with the skill to match those Hendrick drivers, he's definitely got it, and I'm now convinced he has the attitude to match. Hamlin and Kyle Busch? Not so much.

I totally agree with FRENESI Post #77. Jeff Gordon needs a crew chief who can improve the car during the race and not make it worse. How many times did this occur this year. Rick Hendrick should make note and replace Letarte like he did with Junior's crew. Maybe they should lure Ray Evernham back into action since he's no longer a car owner. Otherwise, Jeff Gordon can forget about a 5th title if he keeps Letarte. By next year, Jimmie Johnson would earn his 5th NASCAR title while Gordon and his crew try to figure out what went wrong AGAIN.

How long will it take NASCAR to realize that running a championship race with non-qualifying contenders is stupid? It's like playing the Super Bowl with four teams on the field. Non-contenders get in the way of the contenders. That's pretty simple

he's not a robot he's a normal guy, doesn't hotshot , talk smack, or try to bask in ultimate glory
he's an average Joe who loves what he does for a living
Thats why so many people love him
Its a shame cause lookin at all the other cars views it looks like hornish wasn't bumped
He just tried to pull out of the draft pack a little early maybe to go outside and block johnson from passing
Then changed his mind but the force of the draft he lost control and wiggled right into JJ
No worries though JJ will still win the cup :)

Anyone care to comment on how the 88 pitted too late and how that decision cost Jr a top 10? Maybe the worst decision by McGrew this season. They share a garage with the 5 who pitted with 20 to go and finished 4th. If they had followed their teammate, a top 10 was all but guaranted!
