NASCAR bans bump-drafting in Talladega turns

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)—NASCAR president Mike Helton banned bump-drafting through the turns at Talladega Superspeedway in a stern warning to drivers before Sunday’s race.

He was immediately peppered with questions, beginning with Juan Pablo Montoya, who asked if Helton guaranteed drivers will be punished if they use the practice to win the race.

“The guy you might penalize might be in Victory Lane,” Montoya yelled from the back of the room.

“If the race winner or the guy that takes the checkered (flag) has gotten that position by drafting up through the turns … then that’s going to be an issue with us,” Helton replied.

The room erupted in discussion as Helton continued to speak over the drivers.

“We will not allow doubling up, pushing, locked-up, bump-drafting or whatever you call it in the turns,” Helton said. “All the way through turns 1 and 2, all the way through turns 3 and 4, you will not be allowed to push someone, bump-draft them or shove them through the turns.”

He insisted it will be forbidden the entire race, even on the final lap as drivers jockey for the victory. NASCAR is taking the measure as a safety precaution at Talladega, the fastest track on the circuit.

Aggressive driving and bump-drafting—the act of pushing another car around the track—has steadily grown to dangerous proportions. The April race here ended when Brad Keselowski bump-drafted Carl Edwards through the final lap, then tried to pass him with the checkered flag in sight.

Contact between the two cars sent Edwards’ car sailing into the frontstretch safety fence, which held, but seven fans were injured by flying debris.

Bump-drafting in a less aggressive form will be permitted along the straightaways in Sunday’s race, but Helton warned that NASCAR will be policing for aggressive driving.

“It’s unnatural competition,” Mike Ford, crew chief for Denny Hamlin, said after the meeting. “The drivers want to do everything they can to win a race, and there’s asphalt you already can’t use, now you can’t use your bumper … it’s going to force them to fit in holes that aren’t there and be more aggressive in lane changes.

“And that’s how you get the big wrecks.”

What the hell is Nascar comin to? Even ten years ago it was exciting to watch when the late great Dale Earnhardt was still racing, God rest his soul. Since his tragic accident the sport has went downhill and done it fast. Between all the rules and the politics that has become involved, they are losing more fans than they are gaining. In fact, they just lost one more this weekend. Don't get me wrong, I think all the rules that actually improve the safety of the drivers is great, they are starting to go a little overboard with it. For crying out loud, Talladega is a superspeedway and drafting is the name of the gamenat these tracks, in the straightaways and in the corners and if the drivers can't handle it they need to sit their asses out these races.

Talladaga was my favorite race of the year but now you in Nascar have ruined it..bump drafting is part of racing. they had wrecks even tho they were not allowed near each other in the corners. next it will be they cant touch at all..what the heck is next. Stop taking all the fun out of racing just like when they use to have figure 8 they use to just go but now they have to stop in the middle and cant hit each other..what the heck no fun if there isnt action..These drivers NO how to DRIVE and the ones that dont we know who they are..Like Montoya he needs to go back to his other kind of racing Inde..Please let these drivers drive they know what they are doing..I know you are worried about safety but what Ryan Newman and Mark Martin were in was worse than what ever goes on in those corners...It is called RACING....My brother use to race on a little track when I was 15 and he was in figure 8;s and they did not stop and it was exciting..So let Nascar get back to what it use to be FUN

I agree with the rest of the nascar fans. that talladega race was the boringest race that i have ever been to. i don't think i will waste anymore of my time or money paying for boring races like that. the people are also right about nascar ruining the sport of racing. they should let the drivers, drive their cars. i am proud to live in alabama, but nascar ruined the talladega race. i go in the spring & the fall, but from now on i will just keep my money & stay home & watch a movie instead of a race.

Well, Babyface France and his gang have finally made me a "NON-FAN".
I guess I'll have to watch movies on Sunday afternoons, go fishing, or something equally exciting.
Oh, I can dig out the video tapes from back when they really could race each other, and not the rules.
I wish the drivers would all get together and agree to BOYCOTT all restrictor plate races.
That looks like the only way to get any RACING back into the sport.
NASCAR mandated restrictor plates after Bobby Allison got into the catch fencing at 'Dega in '87
or '88, and Richard Petty had his famous barrel-roll along the rail at Daytona.
So, they restrict the driver's ability to race by making a 190 MPH parade at these two tracks.
Now, we have the "yellow line" rule, and "by the way, no bump-drafting in the turns guys".
HOW MANY MAJOR (THE BIG ONE) ACCIDENTS HAVE WE HAD AT THESE TWO TRACKS
    SINCE RESTRICTOR PLATES WERE MANDATED?
    ALMOST EVERY RACE...
    STUPIDITY REINS AT NASCAR.
    'NUFF SAID.
    Thanks for the memories, Dale...

I noticed the network didn't use a lot of in-car camera shots. I'm sure they didn't want the fans seeing Carl Edwards playing Solitaire on his iPhone, or Mark Martin knitting a scarf, or the, can-not-be-stopped-now, Jimmie Johnson, negotiating his place in the NASCAR HOF and the Rock and Roll HOF, or eventual winner Jamie McMurray perusing the job postings at find-a-ride.com.

This is probably the first time I ever napped during the Talledega race. I got more excitement watching the paint dry and the grass grow.

I think next year they should just have bracket eliminations along pit road. At least you would see some good side-by-side racing.

What a yawner Helton and associated control freaks created. I may give up NASCAR for the international pole dancing competition. (Actually, that was a pretty good idea last year when I considered it... the eventual winner was hotter than Ryan Newman's collar!)

After 50 years of racing working at tracks watching races I'am begining to think my wife is right, she says I won't see anything so great just go to any freeway in the U.S. and get a better show. NASCAR you have three more races, and the winter months to come up with a better plan if you want my support for ever how many years that i have left. Remember I'am watching and lessening.

I wish the drivers would have one strong voice to Helton and France, this racing is pure crap. I got more enjoyment watching the F 1 series Sunday evening than I did watching that boring line of cars most of the day. Then the dumbasses at the top of Nascar want to know why there are empty seats, hey news flash Helton did you see empty seats in Green Bay, or for the Florida vs Georgia game saturday, hell practically every major sport doesnt have problems filling seats for the big games. Talladega is a "big game" for Nascar, and the seats werent empty because of economic issues as much as it was for fans be'n tired of this SH#@!!!!!!

Should be called NAS-SCAB instead of Nascar. What a friggin joke that was. Upper management needs to just go away. Let the drivers drive the damn cars. I've been a loyal Nascar fan for 40 years and i've never seen such a disgusting waste of 3 hours of peoples time. I'm done with Nascar. You won't get ANYMORE of my money or time. Everyone who paid to get in the race should be given a refund.

What was Jr complaining about ?? A few weeks back he said he was just ridin around and havin no fun.. Now hes concerned about racing??????
What is his deal?? Doesnt he have a ride for next year?? Who would release JR from his contract?? Can you imagine some fool with a sniper rifle taking out anyone who would fire JR??
Every time he scratches, the media makes some kind of sensational event out of it. Quite enough, how do the other" non essential" drivers feel about " Mid pack wonder boy? " Would you not feel slighted especially all those ahead of the 8.8 car in point??
It was a great race at Talledega sunday, nap time at Nascar.....the rules will change next Saturday so much for knowing what you get at the race track..
Also is his name Ralph Dale??

The biggest problem that I see with Daytona and Talladega is that the current cars are out performing the track. This along with the restrictor plates, allows the drivers to run wide open all the way around the track, which leads to almost the whole field bunched together in a pack, bump drafting to try to make a pass on another driver (since everyone is pretty much going the same speed). The racing on the track used to be awesome with 6 to 12 lead lap cars making slingshot passes while trying to negotiate cars one or more laps down. The Daytona 500 is just a name now. The racing does not live up to the name like it use to. I enjoy watching NASCAR races but feel strongly that NASCAR should make some changes at the restrictor plate tracks. Here is what I think they should do -

    1) Go to a skinnier, harder compound tire which will offer less grip and will force the drivers to let off the gas in the corners.

    2) Remove the restrictor plates, the cars won't be going as fast since they can't run wide open around the track with the skinnier tires so the racing will be safer without the need of the restrictor plates.

Another option would be to lower the banking of the track.

The whole idea is to create some separation of the field which will lead to better racing as seen at the other tracks on the NASCAR circuit.

    Best regards,
    Brian

    Sheesh!

1.) A restrictor plate single file parade?

2.) 'Mr. Championship' riding around in the back all today?

3.) Announcers who wouldn't even begin to broach the subject of boooooring?

    What a farce!

I wonder how many fans NASCAR lost yesterday???Why have a race if there is no bump drafting.GREAT job MR.HELTON they race @ te4xas this week I wonder what NASCAR do this week!!!!!!!!!

    # 1 thing to POST-----worst racing i ever saw in my life and it was not the drivers fault, not only was it boring, but when you have guys sitting on the track during a red flag and their running out of gas, YES i know thats part of it but my god it was not just one guy it was a bunch of guys and cars slowing down all over the track due to lack of fuel----NASCAR you better start doing something about it because your about to lose me YES i know i am but one fan but i have been watching for the better part of 50 years, get it right --please, thank you !

#53 is dead on. I'm in my mid thirtys and my first race was won by Buddy baker. I was at Pettys 199 and 200th wins. I watched Bobby and Davey finish 1,2 in person. The only reason I have even payed attention this year is Mark Martin. This sport is over. I dont understand how you could kill the sport of legends. Thank god for USF1 we will have something to loook forward to in 2010 . NASCAR is finished.

Worst race in nascar history. Nascar is boring and a complete waste of an afternoon. It has joined the ranks of basketball were you watch the last 2 minutes or the last 10 laps and you haven't missed a thing. The racing is so safe anyone could drive these boxcars. Helton get your head out of your A@#!
No bump drafting?? Come on!! It's time the fans stop watching and stop attending to get the point across that Nascar is boring, races are too long and the present rule makers are complete idiots!!

I'm on my husbands profile but he and i believe the same so anyway.....why don't nascar just go ahead and make that race like 5 laps cause i for one saw that as the most boring race at talladega i have ever seen in my life..granted i'm only 28 but still i do not want to see straight line racing and if thats how it will be screw it i'll jump on formal 1 racing at least it will be somewhat enjoying to watch...i'm not mad at the drivers mad at nascar officials for constantly messing with what got nascar big, no fighting, no bump drafting...good god next you'll be sitting a side a place where people with big hats and drinking champagne like at the horse tracks...nascar was built on down home average people rooting for either the hero or villain...
