Keselowski meets with NASCAR before race

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP)—Brad Keselowski met with top NASCAR officials for about 20 minutes before Sunday’s race at Phoenix International Raceway, where the young driver had yet another on-track run-in with Denny Hamlin.

Keselowski was summoned to a closed-door meeting in the NASCAR truck with president Mike Helton, vice president of competition Robin Pemberton and Nationwide Series director Joe Balash to discuss growing tension among rival drivers about Keselowski’s aggressive nature.

NASCAR chairman Brian France entered the truck mid-meeting.

“I really respect the fact that Brian France walked in there, that meant a lot to me,” Keselowski said after the meeting. “It’s really the first time I’ve ever had a conversation with him. I think that’s a good sign for the sport that he was involved in that conversation.”

At issue is an escalating feud with Hamlin. Contact between the two has led to five Hamlin wrecks dating back to last season, and the latest came in Saturday’s Nationwide race at PIR.

Hamlin hit Keselowski on a restart, and Keselowski retaliated by hitting him back to knock Hamlin’s car out of line. He then followed with a second hit that wrecked Hamlin.

“The second time was a little overboard,” Pemberton said.

Hamlin has vowed revenge in next week’s Nationwide finale at Homestead, pretty much promising to wreck Keselowski. He’s grown increasingly frustrated with an inability to discuss on-track issues with his new rival, and it continued after Saturday night’s race when the two had a short but animated conversation in which Hamlin declared he’d have been more successful making his point “talking to the concrete.”

Keselowski said after meeting with NASCAR that he doesn’t see a need to talk to Hamlin about their conflict.

“I don’t really want to engage that,” he said. “I’m quite satisfied with my own role in the sport as it is with the other drivers. So I don’t feel the need to engage that situation.”

But Rick Hendrick, who co-owns the Nationwide car that Keselowski will drive one last time next weekend, said he thinks the two need to sit down and resolve their differences.

“The sooner they get that behind them, the better off they are going to be,” Hendrick said. “Those kind of things only tear you down and slow you down and get your head all tore up. The way to bury that deal is face-to-face, talk it out, and it will be over.”

Keselowski is moving to Penske Racing full time next season for a Sprint Cup Series ride, and there seems to be a growing list of drivers who hope Keselowski has a difficult transition. Hendrick thinks Keselowski needs to avoid that situation.

“If you get to a point where everybody you get to wants to put a fender on you, you are not going to be very successful,” Hendrick said.

DRIVER ANNOUNCEMENT COMING?: Chip Ganassi has had a seat to fill since July, when Martin Truex Jr. said he’d vacate the No. 1 Chevrolet to drive for Michael Waltrip Racing next season.

Ganassi vowed to take his time replacing Truex, and has: With one week left in the season, he’s yet to announce a replacement.

That could change next week, though. Ganassi said before Sunday’s race that he should be able to discuss the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing lineup next week.

Although Ganassi declined to discuss specifics, he’s expected to reunite with Jamie McMurray, who left his team to drive for Roush Fenway Racing in 2006. But Roush has to cut a team at the end of the year to meet NASCAR’s four-car cap, and McMurray is his only driver in a contract year.

Ganassi’s seat is one of the few competitive opportunities available, but there were whispers of potential sponsor problems in that Bass Pro Shops didn’t think it was a fit with McMurray. That’s apparently been resolved—potentially by McMurray’s win three weeks ago at Talladega.

NO DANICA DEAL … YET?: Rick Hendrick says he has no deal to bring IndyCar superstar Danica Patrick to NASCAR, and there’s no certainty she’ll even be driving stock cars next season.

“I just think that they are not even close to making a decision on whether to even do it this year or next year,” Hendrick said of Patrick and her representatives at IMG.

“You never know until it’s done. You never know until it’s signed. And anybody can change their mind. When you get down to the nitty gritty of any deal, it’s always complicated. There can always be someone who comes back and says ‘I can’t do it because of this.’ So until it’s done, it’s not done. And that’s the honest truth.”

Patrick is reportedly in the final stages of a contract that would partner her on a limited Nationwide Series schedule with JR Motorsports, the team owned by both Hendrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Hendrick called the reports “premature” and insisted nothing is imminent.

“I think everything is an option, and it’s just too early to really comment on it,” he said. “I can’t give you anything concrete, because there isn’t anything concrete right now. Nothing is imminent until it’s signed. Too many things can happen.”

PRE-RACE ACCIDENT: A van carrying crew members for Dale Earnhardt Jr. was involved in an accident outside Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday morning.

No one was injured, although some of the crewmen did go to the infield medical center for evaluation.

“All I know is they were stopped and they got run into,” team owner Rick Hendrick said. “They were pulling into the track and got hit. That’s all I know. They were just stopped, from what I was told, and somebody hit them. They are all OK.”

USE CAUTION: Mark Martin used the question-and-answer period of the pre-race driver meeting to ask the competitors to be careful entering pit road.

Martin raised his hand when race director David Hoots opened the floor for questions, but instead made a statement.

“In green-flag pit stops, everybody needs to be conscious of not going into the corner and washing up into the second lane and then turning down pit road,” Martin said. “Some of the worst wrecks I’ve been in have been like that and last week was close a couple times. All you’ve got to do is go in the corner and stay on the white line. And of course, waving (to signal to the drivers behind you), too.”

Hoots told Martin he’d made a “very valid point.”

GROW UP DENNY!!! Just remember that every year that you race, you get older, more experienced, and if lucky....wiser!! So, don't be surprised that there are younger drivers coming up all the time and may be gunning for you or some other driver to get some attention! Remember a few years ago the attention that Montoya was giving to Jeff Gordon!!! Gee, he didn't like it and Montoya is now a few years older and is still aggressive! Brad K. is just another up and comer and will bump and grind with anyone, no matter who it is. I like that in a driver!! So, if it bothers you or any other driver, start driving a taxi in New York City to toughen up or get on a golf cart!!

Ms. Fryer, you article title - "Hamlin takes more vocal role with NASCAR” makes me ill. What role Hamlin is taking? A Crybaby Role! Just don't forget, Hamlin is an aggressive driver himself. And, the other article, Montoya tries to warn Brad K? JPM also needs a mirror and look at himself, how many incidents he had in the past? He is also a very aggressive driver and now all these aggressive drivers ganging up to against Brad K. who just mind his own business? Remember JPM's car ended up on fire (in the past year's incident)? So far Brad K. didn't say anything about Hamlin, what else Hamlin wants? Hamlin started the contact, isn't he? Hamlin tweet, he grabs media's attention, what kind of game he tries to play? Can he just shut up and drive? Enough with his crap!

Waaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaa. Denny is a part of the new NASCAR where drivers curtsy and wear pretty skirts. Kaslowski is old school and we like it. Dale would be proud. Put him in the #3.

Sean B, did you know that the head offices for Toyota, and Subaru are loctaed in Japan and so that is where the profits would end up. And why should the US government bail out Japanese car manufacturers? Perhapd they should ask renault if they need any help? How about Volkswagen? What an asinine comment. And did you buy the Avalanche used so you don't know how it was treated before? My point about "regular maintenance clearly flew over your head. Do you maintain the Avalanche? Or just moan when it breaks down? What do you do fo a living in the auto manufacturing industry?

BTW, please don't call people idiots. It reflects badly on you. Accurately, but badly.

You're right, enlightenment is fun. No charge for the lesson.

It must be required in JGR that all drivers and their fans whine to much, last year it was Bush and Edwards and this year its Hamilton and Keselowski, Both Bush and Hamilton messed up their chase and had to fined some one to blaim but them selves.
Anouther thing people were harping on Stewart when he first started and look at him know. He drove more crazy then Brad. The same with Earnhardt, Petty, Turner, and Gordon for startes.
Also Bill France said that Nascar was suppose to be for American made cars only what happend,
Toyota brings nothing to the table but a bunch of crybabbiemost of the criers are Toyota drivers, they more worried about were Nascar came from the whiskey drinkin good old boys then that.

If it werent for @ssholes like these two there wouldnt be any excitement in Nascar, just the same drivers and teams teams winning every race! Nationwide racing is nothing but a test track for cup cars,if you cant win a cup Championship you can fall back on the Nationwide Championships you bought!

#87. Listen. I'll be nice, because apparently you know your stuff. At no point did I blame Jetski for what he did at "Dega". What I said was, "I thought Edwards handled it quite nicely." I know Edwards tried to put the block on him. I think you may have misunderstood my point altogether. Hamlin and Keselowski's feud is just what we need. I guess you and I have to agree to disagree. I am not a Hamlin or Jetski fan. They both have gotten on my nerves from time to time. But I do believe that too many people are blaming Hamlin because he comes from the JGR stable. While "B-Kes" gets the old JR Motorsports cushion. Just because he's technically one of Jr.'s pet projects, shouldn't give him the right over anyone else to drive like an a$$hole. I say let them fight. That's what's keeping me interested in the Homestead weekend. While it is quite an accomplishment, I could care less about watching the 48 making history. Until they let these guys race, like old times, I'm lookin' for a rumble!

Sorry 86. The Talladega incident was a block on Ewards part that was too late. Yes he makes contact, but don't reference Dega, it was clean hard racing, and a mistake on the lead car, not the chasing car.
"you block me once, fine, you don't block me twice." Too many drivers have said this over the years.

Are you watching, I have watched Hamlin rough Brad up, several times, only to get paid back, and cry like a little b****. Him a Kyle make a perfect couple.

You know something? I don't know what people have been watching the last six months or so, but Brad Keselowski has been making an awful lot of mistakes on the track. Pay attention people. He's constantly sticking his fenders into places he probably shouldn't be. Carl Edwards handled him quite nicely after the Talladega incident, I thought. Now you people want to bash Denny Hamlin because he's sacking up to the kid? What the hell?!! I happened to really enjoy Hamlin's post race comments on t.v. after Saturday's Nationwide race in Phoenix. I just hope he actually follows through with his possibly idle threats. This is exactly what this sport needs right now. A vicious rivalry. I only hope it's just not for show. I can actually see NASCAR going to these two and forcing them to bicker amongst one another to keep people tuning in each week. That's how bad the racing has got to this point. But hell, I'm up for watching these two duke it out in the infield every week. If that poodle pumper Jimmie "Knaus's poop shoot cleaner" Johnson keeps running up front for the next 18 to 20 years, I say it's on Hamlin's shoulders to create a stir. Because nobody else is doing it.

Wow! Is Nascar making a statement as to which Manufacturer's driver needs a talking to?
Let me get this straight. Hamlin threatens Brad and Nascar has a private talik with Brad?
Seems the one they should be having discussions with is Hamlin. But wait he drives for Toyota not Chevrolet.
Again Nascar shows it is not being fair with all drivers and Manufacturers.
How is it that all the other teams cant run cirlcles around the field ? Except a few special ones.
Jimmie can run away from Mark but they have the same equipment?
Maybe Carquest needs to buy their own track and Mark will get more favors. Wink wink.
All of a sudden Tony doesnt have same HP he had earlier. Same Hendrick engines, right?
Nascar has several areas of questionable actions or lack there of they need to address before they go anywhere near the old days of Yarborough,Dale Sr.,darrel,Buddy, Richard, and Davey.
Thats what we as fans want. Real racing ,not fixed racing. We want competition not single file racing.
We want the 43rd car to have as much of a chance to win the race as the pole sitter.

It Looks more and more like the INDY folks have taken over and the toilet is being flushed.

Toyota is just as bad a GM.....

Toyota asked the government of Japan for a bailout earlier this year. It also suspended work at all 12 of its plants in Japan for 12 days (in February and March). Further, Toyota last year suspended production at its auto plants in Alabama, Indiana and Texas for three months, and shut down output for two days in December at all its North American vehicle factories including five in the United States, one in Canada and another in Mexico. Sales of new vehicles in Japan fell to 3.2 million vehicles last year, the lowest in 34 years, and had its first yearly operating loss in 59 years this year.

Finally, it is no longer the number 1 car maker in the world any longer. This is from a recent article:

That was quick. Only two years after Toyota surpassed General Motors as the world's biggest automaker, it has slipped back into second place.
And, no, the leader is most definitely not G.M. again. The new king of carmakers is Volkswagen.
Like the sales of all other makes, VW's deliveries have fallen sharply of late -- down more than 10 percent from a year ago -- but its drop has been smaller than those of Toyota (off an estimated 47 percent) and G.M. (down 45 percent). That has allowed VW to increase its share of the world market to 11 percent, Reuters reports.
Volkswagen -- which trailed Toyota significantly last year, selling 6.3 million vehicles versus Toyota's 9 million -- is benefiting from government stimulus plans in its three main markets: Germany, China, and Brazil.
Toyota, meanwhile, has been hammered by the economic slump and credit crunch in its two largest markets, the U.S. and Japan. It has even seen its sales in China, its third-largest market, fall every month this year so far.

#62, you really should check your facts before going off on a rant like that. Trust me, most of your 'facts' are wrong. And if the Japanese manufacturers are so bad, why did our government have to bail out GM & Chrusler, but not them?

#74, I've spent a hell of a lot more on my 2003 Chevy 1/2 ton than I ever have on any other car or truck.

Did you know that Toyota Camrys have more US content than most Chrysler & GM products? As does the Subaru Legacy & Outback line.

Yep - you 'buy American' idiots are forgetting that Chrysler hasn't been an American company for years, and twisting the rest of the facts around to fit your needs.

Please keep going though, it is very entertaining reading. Kind of like reading the National Enquirer. By the way, I work in the auto manufacturing industry. The real facts are easy to find, if you truly want to know them. Try it sometime. Enlightenment is fun!
