Montoya not bothered by Griese’s remark

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)—Juan Pablo Montoya was never upset by the “taco” remark that got ESPN announcer Bob Griese suspended.

The network this week suspended Griese from broadcasting a college football game on Saturday for the remark he made last week about Montoya. During a spot for NASCAR, the top five drivers in the standings were shown and Griese was asked where Montoya was in the promotion.

Griese replied Montoya was “out having a taco.”

“At the end of the day, it’s not my responsibility, it is not our sport, it is completely out of my hands,” Montoya said Friday at Talladega Superspeedway. “I never paid attention to the comment, and as I said, I didn’t really care. If they wanted to suspend him for what he did, it’s their problem, not NASCAR or myself.

“I was good with (the remark.)”

Montoya has poked fun at the comment several times over the past week, including Friday, when he said he almost brought trays of tacos for reporters during his weekly news conference.

Earlier in the week, Montoya posted on Twitter that he was going to have tacos for lunch.

“The wife, I told her I wanted Italian, and she said ‘No, I want Mexican,”’ he said. “So I said, ‘Lets go have some Mexican.’ The tacos were so good, too.”

With all these petty so called problems, what ever happened to humor in this once great country? It is a good thing that "All in the Family" happened when it did, It would never be possible under the Obama administration! By the way, that was a great show and guess what, no one was offended. "Rome" is now burning and no one gives a s**t!

Hey Gerald, great comment. Maybe we could get Obama to invite Bob, Pablo and the Media to the White House Garden, and twist open a couple of beers and get them to twist open a few beers and resolve this issue. You know, like he did when his friend got arrested. Oh I forgot, our President probably doesn't watch NASCAR, or ESPN, and what he he care about it. Maybe check with the ACLU, they seem to have their nose in everyones business.

What a wonderful world we live in, you have no right to say anything the government or the media or a special interest group deems inappropriate anymore. Will someone please tell me what country this is we live in and what ever happened to Freedom of Speech or is that just for the music world now. I am sick and tired of all the fricken whiners in the USA if you want to complain about somethig with some substance try high energy cost or health care or the homeless or why we spend billions for Wars that past Presidents and Vice Presidents profit on or child abuse or crime in our streets and the list goes on and on. Lets consentrate on the bigger issues and make those accountable do what is right and then we can all sit down and eat Tacos and refried beans together, no Tequila I dont' like Tequila maybe a Margarita those are tasty.

lol - Who is Bob Griese? Imagine about 20 years from now and someone asks, "Who is Tom Brady and why should I care?" Griese is the only quarterback in the NFL to lead the 1972 Miami Dolphins through an undefeted season, including the Super Bowl.

With that said, it was foolish of him to make any kind of a comment about someone else in another sport. Especially in this day and age when you can't say "boo" to anyone without everyone getting worked up into a lather about it. It is ridiculous.

If Juan was offended, then an appology is in order and move on. As it stands, Juan thought it was funny. So why is Griese suspended? Obviously it is not because of Juan. Perhaps the real story is, who was so offended that they rejected Griese's appology and had him suspended? A TV producer? A TV executive? Give me a break, lets move on already! Griese is paid to entertain and you can't tell me no one laughed at his comment. No matter how lame it really was.

Oldsman you are talking of the one and only Howard Cosell!
Griese should not have been suspended as he did whole heartedly apologise right after!
Heck, even Montoya blew it off. Too much PC crap anymore!

they should seriosuly consider NOT letting the analyst and commentators drink liquor, during broadcast, or while on the job.

And seriosuly. who the hell is Bob Griese anyway. its not like were talking about Madden Deirdorff or Aikmen here.

Most live anouncers, at some point in their carreers will make a "sensitive" mistake, as part of their jobs is to inject a bit of humor and personality in what they do. I remember Howard Cosell made a comment, (I don't remember the game, teams, or Black Player it was about), but during an exciting football play running to ball, he exclaimed "Look at that Monkey Run!!" It was ment to be a complement, but of course was blown out of proportion, and damaged his carreer, when it was just an expression, with no race ment to be envolved...

Too bad Juan didnt speak up right after the fact instead of saying he didnt know who Griese was. He could have put this whole silly thing to bed instead of waiting till after the fact. Now in my opinion he's just prooven himself another opportunist baby.

JPM may be a pain in the rear sometimes, but he does know a joke when he sees it or hears it. I can guarantee you, if someone ask where Jimmy Spencer was, and someone said he was out having some burgers, nothing would have come of that. These PC people make me sick to my stomach.

Ganassi's press people knew how to handle this, they knew better than to make JPM look offended. I don't think it really was a big deal, but I question the judgment of Griese, does he not know he is working for Disney, does he really think they would let a statement like this go and risk upsetting latins?

My hat's off to Juan. He has enough confidence regarding who he is he didn't find it offensive which in fact I'm sure Griese didn't mean it to be offensive. I think it says more about ESPN than it does about Greise and Montoya. The fact they feel the need to be so politically sterile that a joke can't be made I think is a sad commentary. I'd laugh my butt off if it came out on the news that Montoya took Greise out for a taco lunch. That would leave ESPN in a state of utter confusion. If I were Montoya, that's exactly what I'd do.

My respect for Juan Pablo Montoya has gone up, however, my respect for ESPN has gone down greatly. This is the outfit that launched Keith Olbermann, as big a motormouth and egomaniac that has ever walked the Earth. That ESPN was upset over Griese's remark and Montoya wasn't is just another sign of the political correctness that is affecting this country. The media are carrying this "we must not offend" mentality to an extreme.

If I'm not mistaken, ESPN spawned Keith Olberman's career. That's way more dastardly than anything Griese has ever said orr done.

Montoya himself didn't have a problem with it. As a matter of fact, he and Griese should make a Taco Bell commercial together. It could go something like this:

Griese and Montoya enter a Taco Bell restaurant. Griese turns to Juan and says, " Would you believe ESPN suspended me because I said you were eating a taco? Juan says, "Don't worry about it. The next time something like that happens, tell ESPN I'll come over and ef their mothers'".

You know, if Juan doesn't have a problem with the comment, why does ESPN? Heck, Juan's even joking about it! Is ESPN going to suspend him too? We have become so "P.C." about everything, it's getting ridiculous.

It's great that Montoya is taking it all in stride, but as a minority in NASCAR, he should be looked at as a role model for other minorities trying to make it into NASCAR & not be made the butt of a bad joke. Montoya has done very well this season which is not an easy feat coming from a totally different racing series. I'm sure Griese meant to be funny, but in this day of political correctness, such a joke can really bite you in the butt as he's found out. Remember the comments that Howard Cosell, the Greaseman & Don Imus made that did them in? On-air analysts & radio personalities need to be smart in this day and age and think before they say things like that.
