From the Marbles - NASCAR

We spent the weekend roaming Talladega, and as has become a tradition around these parts, documented our journey in real-time via Twitter. (Follow me here.) Below are some of the greatest hits from the weekend ...

Heading to Talladega for the day, plunging into the heart of Junior Nation for an Earnhardt story. This'll be fun.

http://twitpic.com/niopu - The Dega credentials folks are in the Halloween spirit.

More security here at Dega than any other track I've been to. Fortunately they didn't ask if I was carrying ninja throwing stars.

http://twitpic.com/niz96  - If we stare at it long enough, there's gotta be a way to make it go faster.

In the dega infield doing interviews. Told one guy he could see the yahoo site when he got home. He pulled out a laptop and called it up.

Tooth-challenged but technologically advanced Junior fan 1, properly humbled smartass media guy 0.

http://twitpic.com/nj8lz  - Cruelty in the Dega infield. (Look closely. )

Was doing an interview with Jr. fans atop a bus when someone below hollered, "Dale Junior sucks!" The young lady I was interviewing...(cont)

(cont)...leaned over the edge and hollered, "You shut the hell up! I'm doing an interview with Yahoo! Sports, bitch!" I do love the infield.

http://twitpic.com/njd4f  - The end of the line for Kyle Busch ...?

Carl Edwards is bringing everybody in the media center free Subway sandwiches tomorrow. Now that's how you stay on our good side.

http://twitpic.com/nvbmd  - They just pulled Joey Logano out of here kicking and screaming.

http://twitpic.com/nvix8  - They're giving away Mountain Dew by the bin. This is about a morning's supply for me.

http://twitpic.com/nvl1k  - The merchandise hauler armada. If your driver isn't represented here, he probably sucks. Sorry.

http://twitpic.com/nw6bs  - I'm gonna hang here and try to catch a Carl Edwards lugnut.

http://twitpic.com/nw8ue  - Dude on left: best tattoo ever. Dude on right: "This washes off, right? Right?"

http://twitpic.com/nwckk  - All these people are trying to cram through one small gate. And they'd better hurry, 'cause the cars are in the backstretch.

http://twitpic.com/nxt2n  - A closeup of the new Dega fence. Strong enough to hold back a flying car? Hope so.

http://twitpic.com/nxu2l  - If Jimmie Johnson wants this, he's gonna have to fight me for it.

http://twitpic.com/nxwda  - Chris Berman talks of Brett Favre on a tv at Kyle Busch's pit box. This is the single most annoying spot on earth

http://twitpic.com/nxxje  - The view from my seat as the moon rises over Talladega.

http://twitpic.com/ny8an  - Goodnight Talladega. Goodnight moon. Goodnight No. 39 car flipping over the moon.

digg delicious

I would have had more fun reading your comments live then waiting to watch the race on the DVR. That'll teach me.

It's unfortunate that fans have to sit through an event as boring as this. Let these guys drive there cars! That is what the drivers and fans want to see. Let the big boys run. You have safe barriers and safe cars, the fans want to see Super Speedway cars Race so lose the restrictor plates on these Speed Tracks and let them get free from the draft.

nascar has taken every measure to increase the safety for the drivers and the fans. the answer was found in the COT. i have seen more death-defying wrecks in this new car than could have been survived in the old car. what else needs to be done? time and time again there is a horrible wreck and the driver emerges unscathed usually smiling and sometimes even continuing the race on foot. more drivers have been injured playing golf or frisbee than in their 900hp race cars. no one wants to see them get hurt but we also dont want to see them get rich without risking anything. beating and banging is nascar and that is what this car is built for.

You snapped some nice pics Jay! I have to say, the pic of you with the shades does you a lot more justice than the pic that you regularly use on your blogs! I thought you were a real old fart until I saw that pic. I also notice that you haven't stopped growing. You're growing right up thru your hair! :)

Casual fans need to be reminded that NASCAR was formed and remains a confederation of track owners where one family owns an interest in a majority of the tracks. How would the NFL function as a confederation of stadium owners? The main problem with NASCAR racing is the tracks, some like Talladega were built when cars were slower and others like Fontana are just plain boring. The track owners, NASCAR, are attempting to “fix” the problem of bad tracks by creating a car that looks and drives like my old Dodge Dart.
The other master stroke was NASCAR blaming ABC; I wonder how biting the hand that feeds you will work out. I’m fairly confident that the folks over at ABC are not jumping happy with the contract they signed.

In response to the locked up port-a-potty: I was at Dega this weekend, ordered one for my camp site, and locked it. Why? Because I'm not paying $120 to share with a drunk with poor aim.
