Cementing 2009 as a season to forget for Kyle Busch's No. 18 team, crew chief Steve Addington has been let go as the 18's crew chief, to be replaced by Dave Rogers. Addington will be "reassigned to a position within JGR, which sounds ominous. It's the latest in a head-spinning series of events over two seasons that have sent Kyle Busch pinballing between the top of the standings and out-of-the-Chase disgrace.

Busch spent much of 2008 as the preemptive favorite to unseat then-two-time champion Jimmie Johnson, but as soon as the Chase began, two straight back-of-the-pack finishes doomed his hopes. He entered 2009 with your classic renewed sense of purpose, humbled by the realization that running well in the summertime doesn't translate to running well in the Chase.

But even though he posted as many wins -- four -- as anyone in the regular season, Busch didn't make the Chase, thanks to a wildly inconsistent checkers-or-wreckers style that saw him running as either the favorite or an afterthought. One season of inconsistency from a talented but still young driver is acceptable; two in a row means heads have to roll.

Interestingly, JD Gibbs addressed this exact point after the race Sunday, indicating that a lot of Kyle's problems stem from "confidence" - more specifically, the lack thereof. "As far as the Addington crew piece," Gibbs added, "from our standpoint, we just want to make sure we have the right tools, the right people in the right place at JGR. We think we do; we think we have a great group, [from] crew chiefs to engineers to guys on the shop floor across the whole board." Apparently, though, Addington wasn't the right person in the right place.

Rogers, meanwhile, has spent four seasons crewing the No. 20 on the Nationwide side, and won the Nationwide Owner's championship with nine victories spread across four drivers. He apprenticed under Greg Zipadelli during Tony Stewart's 2002 championship run.

"Dave has proven himself a talented crew chief and we think he will work well with Kyle," Gibbs said in a statement. "We hope that by making the move following this weekend's race at Talladega they can use the final three weeks of this season to begin working on communication and setups for the 2010 season."

As with Dale Earnhardt Jr., we'll now see how much of the 18's problems stemmed from the guy in the box, and how many stemmed from the guy behind the wheel.

I don't get this one. Not a Bush fan at all, but this isn't right. This guy put Kyle in position to be competitive and win a lot of races. He didn't wreck the cars. If Kyle hadn't pulled up in front of Stewart at Daytona, he'd have gone into the Chase tied for first based on his wins.

Anybody else thinking of that old phrase, "A Flash in the Pan"?

I think we will find out how good Kyle really is now.
Remember when he was at Hendrick , with the same crew Mark Martian has , he was only a mediocre driver.
Addington deserves a lot of credit for Kyle's success.
Time will tell , just like Jet Ski with Eury JR.

Carol-My old man said that excat same thing to me when he was on his little hot streak last year that Kyle was a flash in the pan. He didnt just get 10 times better when he left Rick for Joe it made no logical sense, you dont leave the top rate Chevy team for the third best Chevy team and become unstoppable without their being a reason and low and behold it was the extra HP,we saw how he struggled shortly their afterwards.
    He was fools gold.

my guess is that the guy atop the box couldn't get the guy behind the wheel to focus properly, which is why, despite their run of success the past two years, Steve Addington now finds himself out of a job. There were many times when the problem was Kyle, but many of those times, the problem could have been nipped in the bud by the crew chief if he'd commanded more respect from the driver.

It's totally crazy - 12 wins in 68 races? There are teams that would sell their collective souls for those stats! Maybe they should have a little talk with the driver about some on-track really stupid moves that took him out of contention for a win!

Good point, Nostra, but I think a great deal of Kyle's problem is a big lack of respect for anybody! Probably did not get spanked enough as a kid!

There could be a drill sergeant on top of the pit box and Kyle would still cry like a spoiled baby in the car when he's running in 2nd place.

Marce, indeed, and you'd think that with an older brother like Kurt, Kyle would've learned his place, or been put in it, by his charming older sibling.

Wasn't Kyle the one who commented that they were blaming the wrong guy when Tony Jr. got booted from Dale Jr.'s pit box??? Hmmmm.....be careful that the words that come out of your mouth are sweet...you may have to eat them later.

I know all you guys have a point but I have been hoping and waiting for this for quite awhile. One question I have is why Denny and Joey and Tony all have and had better cup cars than Kyle. He started out great in 08 but the last had bad cars. Yes I agree his attitude was part of the problem but what would you do if your car wasn't running good.

When the tire changer is throwing the air-gun at the car on exit from the pit-box, ummm... it ain't the crew-chief's fault... don't look now, but Howdy-Doodie is an ass.... (Doodie being the key word!!)

someone said the other day on one of these blogs... maybe if drivers only focused on one series, instead of 2 or 3 in some cases, then they might do better. Kyle is trying to win the Nationwise title, so that says his focus isnt on his main job, doesn't it. Look at the other drivers having "issues" this year. They all are either running more then one series on a regular basis or trying to run their own teams. Just something to think about.

I see addington leaving JGR fo work with Keselowski. Or maybe even Kurt Busch if that opening is still there. If Stewart was smart he'd get him now and use him for his third team next year. Addington is an incredible crew chief.

Addington did a tremendous job prepping a car and guiding a driver who can't communicate any more specific than, "This car is junk!" Johnson and Knaus will win their 4th straight championship because they COMMUNICATE and the driver is focused on the Cup series rather than competing full-time in the lower-tier series with a heavy schedule in the Truck series. Busch will not improve with a new crew chief. He will only improve with a new attitude!
