From the Couch: Stop doing the mess around

How does John Andretti parked at the start/finish line not constitute debris?

A week ago (or was it the week before?), it was a beer cup, or a foam seat cushion, or some other form of armor-piercing projectile, so justifiably a caution was thrown. This week a gen-u-ine, two-time Winston Cup race winner was performing his best bulls-eye impression, and NACAR let 'em race.

Color me confused. (I mean, I can understand letting them race to the finish if Scott "The Antonym" Speed is sitting there, but an Andretti? Sacrilege.)

The only thing consistent about NASCAR right now is the 48 team, who is consistently - and nauseatingly - great. (Actually, that's selling them short. Their domination is absolute. They are de-pantsing the competition, currently.) Yeah, that's not entirely accurate. The only things consistent about NASCAR lately have been the 48 team (consistently consistent), Junior (consistently unlucky and, one presumes given his sad fortune lately, drunk), Michael Waltrip (consistently, one gathers from reading his police reports, just under drunk), and NASCAR itself (consistently inconsistent).

This - specifically - is what's driving me crazy about NASCAR right now.

And the phantom debris caution (and occasional real, human debris non-caution) is the most ordinary and observable example. And don't tell me that an empty beer can on the back stretch is a threat to the safety of the drivers.

A) The windshields are polycarbonate resin thermoplastic. The same material used for the cockpit canopy of a F-22 Raptor.

B) I watched Carl Edwards get hit by a flying catch fence (yeah, he was doing the flying, but it sounds better that way) and distinctly remember him jogging across the finish line.

C) College kids smash empty beer cans off their foreheads as a mating ritual.

NASCAR, under dubious assertions at times, exerts its will when it feels so inclined.

I suppose, as a fan, I should feel some sort of rebellious gratitude. They aren't doing it for themselves. They are doing it for me. NASCAR is always trying to improve the product, and I do not know of another sporting authority that blatantly attempts to improve the finish of an event - during the actual event - for my enjoyment. But the fact that they do it isn't what bugs me. It's the consistency, or inconsistency, by which they do it.

It's hard to play the game when the rules are constantly changing. It's also hard to follow the game when the rules are constantly changing. And well beyond the phantom debris caution, they are simply screwing with it too much.

The cries I hear most are demanding even more change. Points for qualifying, points for wins, points for the regular season, minus points for wrecking a Chase contender (okay, not quite, but I'm sure they've thought about it), and most loudly, change the CoT. I disagree.

I'm not ecstatic with the Chase or the CoT, but I also don't have any idea of what they can be. (I'm also a Gordon fan, and so constitutionally bound to despise both the Chase and the CoT for denying him his fifth, respectively). They don't let me look at any one iteration long enough to witness the potential. They've introduced too many variables, and thus far, let none of them mature.

In an effort to improve the product, they've allowed the product to rule themselves (the Chase format produced their annual tinkering with it). In their effort to make it something for everyone, they've made it nothing to some (California produced boring racing to the North Wilkesboro die-hard). In their effort to unify, they've lost their uniformity (the CoT enhanced Hendrick domination).

I suppose I'd just like NASCAR to let them race under the same set of rules for a while. Of course, if Martinsville hadn't reminded me how much I miss the mad sprint to the start/finish following a caution, I probably wouldn't be disturbed by any of this.

digg delicious

fantastic article James... as per usual. I was holding my breath in fear when I saw that they were going to throw the caution for Andretti.. seriously, wth?? There's a reason the NASCAR "handbook" is not made public...

    James G:
NFL and NBA have "30 second" timeouts and ""full" timeouts. Why do we need a "full" timeout for every yellow from the big one at Dega to the hot dog wrapper at Michigan? How about keeping the pits closed for the "debris" caution, have an official pick up the offending item and turning them loose again after a lap or two?

there's actually an interesting article on Nascar Insiders where they talk about how phantom debris cautions are nothing new; and since I am rather new to the sport, I've spent time on youtube, admittedly not a substitute for watching the former live broadcasts, but I've watched footage from North Wilkesboro, particularly from the last race there where it seems that race winner Jeff Gordon was doing nothing different than Jimmie Johnson is doing today - dominating the field with little competition. I think a lot of diehard fans are looking at Nascar's past through rose-colored glasses. Yes, I'm sure the racing and ambience were a bit better back in the day, but seriously, it seems as if dudes used to win races by multiple laps over the second place finisher. The only difference is that today there are trillions of media outlets trying to attract readers' attention, and they will therefore find anything that appeals to the masses. Are we all really that tore up because Bobby Labonte lost his ride due to sponsorship concerns? Was anybody other than Kasey Kahne upset when they had to double-file restart towards the tail-end of the race at Fontana? Maybe Greg Biffle, but otherwise, it seems as if Nascar is giving fans what they want but it's still not enough. The sport isn't perfect, and all professional leagues are corrupt and guided by big-monied interests, it's called the evolution of the free market economy.

James - I think you were, not only way off base, but way out of line, insinuating that Jr was drunk. My opinion of you has lowered immensely. What right do you have assuming that Jr got drunk because of his problems. You may have a right to assume that, but I don't think you have a right to publish it as a fact , just to create some controversy for your blog. Just because the man owns a bar, does NOT mean that every time he has a problem, that he gets drunk and you sure as hell put that idea in peoples minds with that statement. Shame on you! Maybe that's the way you act when you have problems, but not everyone is a drunk. Unless you know it as a fact, I believe that it is very poor judgement to publish your assumptions in that regard.

Reds24 You may be right, but assuming or giving the impression that someone is a drunk, especially in a forum such as this, where people will pick it up and run with it, bothers me deeply. I guess that I've seen too many drunks in my life and although my wife doesn't drink, a whole lot of her family are alcoholics. It's really sad and I let it get to me sometimes.

Rudy - I think you're missing the point of James' article. It's his OPINION and to entertain the readers. Who knows, maybe Jr does have a drinking problem? Or just like you believe J. Methead is guilty while others think he's innocent?

Ok you guys! I retract my statement. Just didn't sound like a joke to me. BTW No comparison to someone who has had TWO positive tests for meth and has physical signs of it's use! I've never seen Jr acting drunk. Just because someone owns a bar, doesn't make him a drunk. Andre Agassi admitted to using meth and that was a surprise to everybody. He evidently didn't show signs of it, as not everybody does!

James- So the human element doesn't apply to Nascar. Do you ever see bad calls made in a football or basketball game? Like football and basketball those calls are made by real people in a split second on a reaction to what they see. They are not always right but it's not always a conspiracy either. No rule book can cover every situation that might happen in a Nascar race. A college student can't sue Nascar for millions when they intentionally smash a beer can on their own head. A fan could. Guess thats why Nascar stops the race to go get the beer can. Really James it's not to ruin your day with another caution. There will always be judgement calls and they won't all be popular. You fail to mention that the race finished on a CHECKERED/CAUTION. This means James that after the first car passes the finish line the field is frozen and the race is over. Of course if Jimmie Johnson was leading you would still have a problem with just a plain ole caution and another Johnson victory. Unlike you I am grateful for the COT. Believe it or not James it has a real purpose other than taking the excitment out of the sport for you. You might not be a Gordon fan today if it wasn't for the COT. You make the same arguments a lot of ignor....... less informed people make. Bet you want the plates off the cars at Talladega and Daytona too. If your goal to make Nascar look more like Wrestling then you have done a good job with that article. Of course if you have no respect for Darrell Waltrip and his contribution to the sport then your not a real fan anyway. I think you know that now.
