From the Marbles - NASCAR

Every time NASCAR comes to Talladega, drivers and fans alike know that "The Big One" -- a wreck that decimates a huge chunk of the field -- lurks around every turn. And every time, The Big One rears up and collects cars by the dozen.

The collisions at Talladega are both spectacular and terrifying; the bump that sent Carl Edwards flying into the fence in April still stands as one of NASCAR's most wrenching wrecks. Sunday at the Amp Energy 500, Ryan Newman drew the short straw, and his flipping, pancaking late-race wreck was, without a doubt, the scariest since Edwards:

For long minutes, Newman's car sat upside down with no word from within. And for long minutes, NASCAR fans feared the worst; sure, the cars are safer, but Newman landed smack on his roof! Just how tough could those cars be?

Finally, Newman spoke and confirmed that he wasn't injured. Crews flipped over the car and opened it like a tuna can, and Newman climbed out as if he was just getting out of bed. And once he'd collected himself, he had some pointed words for NASCAR and the fans who look forward to the wrecks: "That's not something anybody wants to see, at least I hope not," he said. "If they do, go home, because you don't belong here."

As bad as Newman's wreck was, however, it was about to get worse for the rest of the field.

With two laps to go and nearly two dozen cars within one second of the lead, someone -- perhaps it was Brian Vickers; perhaps it was Brad Keselowski, who sent Edwards into the wall in the spring -- got antsy and made a charge that sent Kurt Busch spinning. And from there, it was on:

As it turned out, this Big One may well have cemented Jimmie Johnson's unprecedented run for a fourth straight title; his closest pursuers, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin, were both caught up in the 13-car wreck and ended the race farther behind Johnson than when the day began.

Wrecks are part of the thrill of NASCAR, an essential element of the overall storyline. But watching the Newman wreck, like the Edwards one before it, the queasiness starts to set in. NASCAR hasn't had an in-race fatality in the Sprint series since Dale Earnhardt died at the Daytona 500 in 2001. Is the sport safer, or is it living on borrowed time?

it's not racing anymore. When they were ready to restart for the green/white/checker they postponed it one lap because drivers were running out of gas--why? That's changing the rules on the fly. I've been more than patient with the radical rules changes but it's not even stock car racing anymore. And they wonder why ratings are dropping--they blame it on the NFL instead of their own incompetence. Good luck NASCAR, you're gonna need it!!!

So now we get to spend the last few weeks watching to see which driver will take second place!
Oh! and watching all of the clever ways that the 48 team can come up with on how to drive cautiously and avoid the other 42 cars on the track.

the whole for long minutes there was no word witihin is crap, they knew within minutes that he was ok and had feeling in his arms legs and was conscious, thats why they elected to to flip the car because it would be easier to remove him, if they didnt have this conformation it would have gone much faster. way to try and hype up the story by making things seem much worse, love media fear mongering

the sport died with dale sr to many rules and no good raceing .im glad the cars are safer but they change the rules all the time.if all the car are the same you get the same bull [profane] race everytime.they need to take the point system out of nascar its not football. 48 is going to win this next and the year after that.

NASCAR stopped being NASCAR when it became a politically correct sport. No way that all those wallstreet people would be able to deal with NASCAR as we loved it. So they changed it, they said "No No must not swear, must not touch another car, must be a mealy mouth when talking to the press" and this is what is left. I have been praying for years that someone else would start up a league that was what NASCAR was and is meant to be! Good ole boy racing with all the wonderful highs and lows it had in years past!

CL, all you have to do is change the channel. No one is making you watch the race.

Alright, for those of you idiots who keep making fun of the cars going around in circles I'll give you some credit because as a "Former" NASCAR fan it used to be a great sport to watch, especially if you were actually there. It USED to be the best racing to watch by far compared to other auto racing sports when guys were actually allowed to race. I used to defend NASCAR against the "round and round in circles" comments.....but not anymore. NASCAR you have done it to yourself....and the thousands of empty seats of Talladega is more from your incompetence than the economy I guarantee you.

Steven, there was no radio communication between Newman and his crew until the car was flipped back over bc the antenna disconnected. Therefore, the average joe would not know that he was okay, NASCAR was aware bc of the radios on the emergency crew.
all you haters are morons.. btw.

I loved all the hype about the COT, how it was going to bring back more "side by side" racing. HA!! When is that going to happen? Same with Goodyear tires. Geesh, racing just ain't what it used to be. Bill France must be rolling in his grave at the mockery his son has brought to the sport. Don't get me wrong, I still like racing, but I would rather spend a few dollars at the local dirt tracks than spend a paycheck at a Nascar event. Much better racing in my opinion.

worst race i've ever seen, i can't believe NASCAR told the drivers how they can and cannot race....no bump drafting in corners?? it was a boring race that ended with some guy winning on a technicality...and to think i was looking forward to this race for about a month.....so tired of it
