Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort title fight targeted for UFC 109 on Feb. 6

The highly anticipated UFC middleweight title fight between current champ Anderson Silva and explosive challenger Vitor Belfort is now targeted for UFC 109.

The UFC had originally hoped to feature the contest at UFC 108, but Silva's recovery process from elbow surgery forced a delay in the schedule.

Belfort first released news of the new date to the Portugese-language Terra magazine's "Mano a Mano" blog, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed with sources close to the bout that verbal agreements are in place. Bout agreements have yet to be signed.

The bout is also contingent upon Silva's recovery process.

The bout between Belfort and Silva has been planned since "The Phenom's" triumphant return to the UFC with a  TKO win over Rich Franklin in the catchweight main event of "UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort."

Silva's camp had initially expressed some resistance to taking a middleweight title fight with Belfort due to the challenger having yet to fight at 185 pounds in his return to the UFC. The champ has since agreed to put his belt on the line against Belfort whenever the fight does happen.

As for the elbow, Silva's manager, Ed Soares, told MMAjunkie.com in October that he doesn't believe there's a reason for any long-term concern.

"Anderson's recovery is going really, really well," Soares said. "He's coming back, and his recovery is doing really good. His physical therapy is going really well. He's getting better range of motion. He'll be back 100 percent for sure."

This is for Jordan. Are you delusional? Dan Henderson is a great striker? What planet are you on? He is a great wrestler with a great chin, and very good power in his right hand. You are confusing great striking with great power. At best I would say Henderson is a good striker. I would say Forrest Griffin is a better striker, he just doesn't have the power to put people away. But, I would say Hendo is the all-around better fighter.

manny I totally agree with you. But vitor isn't getting any younger and sliva isn't either. I would expect a younger guy to beat sliva and hold the belt than another guy around his age that won't last. Sliva is going to retire soon as he mentioned many times. Vitor will have to also.

    To post 52 :

Who says you cant beat a champ with leg kicks? I have never heard of that, ever. You really dont have any idea what you are talking about. Have you heard of Maurice Smith? There are also other fighters that utilize the leg kick well enough to win fights. You also said " Machida is usually more agressive than he was in the Rua fight " . How many of Machida's fights have you seen ? Hes a counter puncher/fighter. That means he waits for you to attempt to strike and counters that with a strike. Very little agression with that style.

This is going to be a good fight between Vitor and Silva. If the real Vitor shows up I think he will win. If he doesnt come in totally focused Silva will pick him apart.

This is to all the idiots including brandon that thought Rua beat Machida. Only people who really understands mma and paid attention to the fight will realize that you can't beat a champ with leg kicks. That was Rua's main strike. I watched this fight twice and both times I watched it Machida won rounds 1, 2 and 3. Rua can have 4 and 5 bc leg kicks don't beat a champion. I will say the fight was a little disappointing since machida usually is alot more agressive, however, I think Machida just has alot of repect for Rua and fought a more defensive battle. machida and rua used to train together they are very familiar with each other. Ruas game plan sucked, he seen that every other guy has got knocked the @#$% out so he played it safe by throwing quick kicks and backing up. Well sorry to all you people but to be the champ u have to beat the champ and that is not how you win over judges.

    Hey jayolf,

I respect that you think Fedor is a good P4P fighter but the people he has fought in his last 10 matches does not encourage me in picking him the best P4P fighter over GSP or Silva. Stop drinking the Fedor Kool-Aid till he beats an elite fighter that gets decent betting odds, not like Mr. Rogers.....

F****n A, Alvin!!! Fedor is a douche nozzle for signing with Strikeforce. Hes so ridiculously overrated. Fedor fans make me sick. Yous guys think this guy is invincible. Why? Who has he beaten to make him "The Best"? He beat Nogueira twice but it took him to decision both times. Rogers beat his ass the 1st round. Put him in there with Mir and he would get crushed. LESNAR WOULD DESTROY FEDOR!!! And for you Jayoff, as far as the UFC stepping up...you're a total f****n dumb s*** waste of life. Dana White offered that overrated pile of s*** 3.5 million PER FIGHT to come to the UFC. It was a 6 fight contract, an immediate title shot vs Brock and a ton of extras. THE BIGGEST CONTRACT EVER OFFERED IN THE HISTORY OF MMA. They were going to allow him to advertise for M1 every time he fought. He could wear M1 shirts, hang M1 banners over the octagon and even talk about M1 after the fights with Joe Rogan. They have NEVER let anyone do any of that. After they had finally agreed to a contract in principal, then they sprung the notion of co-promoting M1 with the UFC. That is the only thing that the UFC would not do. The notion then became a demand. That is a complete bull s*** demand because they knew that the UFC would not agree to it and that was their was of getting out of signing with them. He's ducking the best fighters in the world by making outrageous demands. Maybe now that you know that you can get the f*** of his nuts.

get fedors dik out of your ass, if they step up???? If he is the best, why did he end up signing with Strikeforce??? Yeah, he beat two ex ufc champs, but Sylvia? ha ha. And Arlovski?? We all saw what Rodgers did to him. So dont come with that bull ish saying they need to step up. That @#$% needs to step up and sign with the UFC and see if he can hang... Fedor is over rated

OMG! you retards seriously think Vitor is gonna win??? Please find a way to contact me, I will bet you any amount of $ you want!!!! This fight is already over before it even starts. A. Silva is going to demolish Belfort. I can't believe you ppl are buying into the ufc hype machine that this is even going to be a "fight." Vitor barely has a "puncher's chance" against Silva, and unless he gets lucky with a KO punch, Anderson is gonna scrub him up!!! Vitor has already been scrubbed up by Hendo back in 2006, so what do ya think Silva is gonna do??? UFC is becoming the Ultimate Snoozefest Fighting where all the bouts are set up for one guy to win over the other. Wake me up when the ufc actually has a real fight

BTW - FEDOR IS THE BEST P4P FIGHTER IN THE WORLD. All the ufc "champs" are only paper champs until they step up to fight Fedor. Like y'all said, to be the best you have to beat the best and FEDOR IS THE BEST!!!

Hey Jeff. Just wanted to let you know there will probably never be a Silva vs. Machida fight. They are very good friends and train together. Silva even said himself that he would never fight Machida. If he moves to light Heavy he will only be doing it for the challenge and will not fight Machida.

Pen, wouldn't you agree that in MMA its all about what happens in the ring? We could watch all the old fights but in the end it's what happens in this up coming fight that matters. Unless your a no name fighter off the street, there's always a chance that the fight could go either way. Thats why they give fighters that have lost a chance to work their way up and fight the same guy they lost to again. It's about training hard, learning a new technique, improving things your already good at, and trying to figure out your opponents weakness. Even guy's off the street have a chance because of if they train hard they might be able to win. So he lost to Hendo, so what, now he's trained harder, learned from his mistakes, and has a chance to fight the best. I won't say anything about the idiot comment cuz , whatever, people say what they think they need to say, but it is possible for Vitor to win. The underdog does win sometimes. Keep an open mind homie, thats what makes MMA fun to watch. You might get a great fight, a good fight, or a quick good fight, and sometimes a dud. Silva has fought in some dud's that he took the guy out really quick without any effort. Whether the fighters were bad or he was just that good is up in the air in those, the fight versus Forrest really showed me how good he is. I thought that one was atleast going to go the distance. But you never know when it's two good fighters.

Again for all you idiots. Vitor lost to Hendo, Hendo lost to Sliva. Hendo gave a better performance than anybody so far. Vitor can't even beat Hendo what makes you think vitor has a chance please. You people need to look fight videos again.

I agree 100% with what Rio said..... A. Silva should move up to Lt. heavy after he beats Belfort there is really no one left. So Anderson vacates his Middleweight belt, then you could generate some interest by having a round robin tournament for the vacant middleweight belt!
Anderson belongs with the lt. heavys and the heavys. I honest thought we were gonna see a Machida vs. Silva super fight soon, but it may have to wait till shogun and the dragon figure it out between each other.

    On another note.....GET WELL BROCK!!!!!

I'm not going to try and call this fight. Don't think it's a good idea because both fighters bring good skills, it's going to be a good fight. Those of you making calls, fine your entitled to guess or root for whoever you want. Those that guarantee Silva will win are forgetting when other greats that we all thought were definately going to win and they lost. Hec some of them got knocked the F out! Like the Iceman. So there are no guarantees in this fight. Silva is a great fighter, but even great fighters can get beat. I hope it stays up and we see how he handles Vitor's punch. If it goes to the ground Silva will probably get a submission, thats my GUESS, but I would be pretty disappointed if he finishes it quick with a submission. Thats IMO. Can't wait to see what happens. I also think GSP is a great fighter and he would take out Silva. It would be a great fight, but GSP would take it. How? That I don't know, I'm not Nostra-Manny-mus. But I do think GSP would win.

As for BRANDON could you please get off Fedor's jock! Seriously, he is not the best until he fights the best! I'm sick of everyone being on his jock. Yes his fights are good and he is a good fighter, but until he fights some UFC heavy weights including Brock (if he gets healthy) then he's not the best! Period! And before anyone jumps at me, no, I'm not on the UFC's jock, but they have proven to aquire the best fighters in the world. Their fights are much better then all the other promoters. For example those pitiful CBS fights that Strikeforce put together. Atleast the UFC brings you good fights with maybe one dud, they put together a bunch of dud's with one decent one (the Fedor fight) which still kind of left me thinking "thats it?" Rogers looked scared from the moment he walked into the ring! I called it before the fight started.

Most of you guys crack me up on here. I think alot of you are stuck in the video game generation. These aren't video games and action heroes. These are real people. On paper, it would seem Silva in invincible. On paper. I will agree that Anderson Silva is one of the greatest pound for pound fighters in the world. He has been overly dominant in most of his fights; however, he has been exposed a few times in his fights. Travis Lutter almost choked him out, Dan Henderson showed he could be taken down fairly easily. And I don't even want to talk about the Cote fight. Matchups make fights. Is an average to good striker going to outstrike Silva? No. Everyone he has fought was at a technical disadvantage in striking. Hence, the only times he has been in trouble is when he was taken down. I believe Belfort is going to be the best striker Silva has faced. And, Silva has not experienced the type of power that Belfort is going to bring. That ladies and gentleman, is going to be the key to this fight. How does Silva respond to someone who hits harder than him, almost as accurately, AND is not going to be intimidated by him? My thoughts. Vitor win by KO in the third round!

Doesnt Silva walked around at like 220? i dont think Belforts size will play any part of this. Nor will his striking. Granted i havent watched any of his recent fights, but his old ones where he just came in throwing will not work against Silva. If they stand up, Belfort may tag him a few times, but not enough to hurt him. Could take a round but will lose once silva makes his adjustments..... kinda like what fedor does to people. The only Fedor loses fights is by getting cut so maybe that is why he stays out of the UFC with their elbows.

I wish Pride was still around so i could watch ppl get soccer kicked in the head or knee'd on the ground. also youtube "silvas chin" if you want to see what he can take, there is one clip where he literally lets the guy hit him like 3-4 times and it doesnt faze him.

Everyone that thought forrest would beat silva should not be allowed to comment on another Silva fight. He made Forrest QUIT. That was some funny crap. Looked like the Matrix, and forrest looked like Ric flair. Wooooo. I have yet to figure out what he is even good at(not great, good) Forrest didnt come close to beating Rampage if rua lost to machida. If he is still your favorite fighter, your probably a loser/giver-er upper like him.
