Cagewriter - UFC

The Mandalay Bay Events Center could feel like bizarro world on Nov. 21. At UFC 106, as he enters the arena to face Forrest Griffin, Tito Ortiz may actually be the fan favorite. It's still unknown as to whether fans have turned their backs on Griffin after two straight losses and his odd behavior after the UFC 101 loss to Anderson Silva. After being knocked out, he sprinted from the cage back to the lockerroom.

Ortiz, a polarizing figure, always says he's about the fans. He told Cagewriter he's not so sure that's the case anymore with Griffin:

"After any loss, that's the last thing you want to do, is run away from your fans, not give an explanation, kind of quitting on your fans." Ortiz said of Griffin's mad dash. "I've heard a lot of people already talk about that."

There's plenty of pressure on both fighters. Griffin can't afford a third straight loss especially to a guy that Dana White, for the last few years, said wasn't even a top 10 fighter anymore at light heavyweight.MORE

"He took this fight thinkng maybe Tito Ortiz isn't a 100-percent after back surgery."

But Ortiz says Griffin may the one who's not 100-percent:

"I've seen time and time before where guys get knocked out and their heads get soft. I hope he's getting weak."

Ortiz's back surgery was back on Oct. 6 of 2008. Before that, he said it felt like someone was stabbing him in the lower back with an ice pick. Now pain free, he's ready to go.

Now a main event fighter, Ortiz also has the pressure of trying to sell an entire pay-per-view. Sure the fans got screwed with the Brock Lesnar-Shane Carwin fight being dumped but it was Ortiz who really took a hit in the wallet. Most high level fighters with the promotion get some sort of back end PPV cut. Without Lesnar, this card may have just gone from a buy rate of 1 million down to around 300,000-400,000.

Listen to the end of the conversation where Ortiz says he thought Mauricio Rua won the fight against Lyoto Machida at UFC 104. He also says the judges and referees need a major overhaul in California, pointing to his draw against Rashad Evans as an example.

What would be hilarious is if Forrest were to KO Tito in the first round, then run away!!

Can Tito have a fight without selling it using smack talk? No. His talking is all outside of the ring, because otherwise, he's been out of the cage or stinking it up.

    Cofield,
Do you read your articles before you post them? Make at least one revising pass through before you post the article. That will prevent misspellings, grammar errors, and completely leaving words out.

I hardly consider this or his last interview smack talk, he's being asked questions about the Griffin incident and anwering them how he feels. If he had said "Griffin is a classless punk who only cares about himself and turned his back on his fan's" that would be smack talk.

Tito please shut the F-ing up already. You haven't back up your rhetoric in years. Let the "New and improved injury free fighter do the talking in the cage so we can take you seriously again

It's called selling a pay-per-view. you will hear a lot more of it too in the leadup to the card. The running man might even have an interview or two.

jojohn1958 and the rest tell it to his face! Yep thought so KBWs all over acting like they are tough. Tito at least stayed in the ring after getting a spanking from RC and didn't run away crying. 2 nuts t2t in a slobber knocker and you V8s are complaining get real and drink some!

I second that 13. what is 12 trying to say?
    My best translation:
Anyone who doubts Tito should tell it to his face. (for the life of me, I have no clue what a KBW is) Tito stayed in the ring after getting beat up by Randy Couture, he did not run away. This fight is going to be two tough guys going toe to toe, balls out....and you slobs are complaining about it...get real, drink the kool aid on this one.
No clue if I am anywhere close.

I actually herd Griffen had to piss, and decided to get in the ring insted of going back and draining the vain..Then when it was on he had to piss his pants so he took damage to go piss..Or he pissed his pants and that's why he ran..

@ Robert C... I think KBW stands for Keyboard Warriors (at least it fits). All in all I hope Griffin will get his head screwed on straight before he takes on Tito because if he doesn't he'll probably lose again and be done in the UFC. Actually this kind of talk from Tito is kind of tame compared to his earlier trash talk when he was a popular draw for the UFC.

Seriously? He tried to compare his loss to Rashad Evans to the Machida-Rua fight? Maybe he should have mentioned when he fought Griffin the first time and one judge actually gave it to Ortiz 30-27. That's an example of bad judging. How does Ortiz keep turning questions about other people into how he got "screwed."

good point jamie. i've always been somewhat of a tito fan, regardless of his talk...but the one thing that kept me from whole-heartedly liking the guy was his inability to own up to his losses and mistakes he made in the fights. sometimes he did own up right then and there but you always saw some interview or read some quote where he said something totally ignorant about why he failed.

I agree with #'s 18/19. I too like Tito and for the most part he has a warriors heart but his rhetoric sucks when he doesn't back it up or admits losses! Given that he is now under pressure to help promote this mid-level card, i guess he does have to go rhetoric to the wall.

only thing tito has going is jenna jamson, and both tito and forrest aren't very good. i wouldn't put either in the championchip contender level. if they don't add a main card, i would be surprised if that fight does 400K buys.......put mike swick v.s rumble johnson, and winner gets GSP. I am sure Johnson won;t mind, since he missed out on 10% of his purse, and did not qualify for ko of the night which should have been his. and he didn;t break a sweat in his first round ko.

I think griffin freaked after getting rolled by silva
Cause he actually thought he stood a chance. I liked
Griffin as a person. But have always felt he was way over
rated. I think rua should get a rematch now that his cardio
    Is on par.
