Joe Warren was on top of the world -- literally. The American Greco-Roman wrestler won the world championships in 2006, and was looking like a favorite to win gold in Beijing. That was until his Olympic dreams went up in smoke, again, quite literally.
Warren tested positive for THC, the chemical produced by marijuana, after the U.S. World Team Trials in 2007. As this was Warren's second offense, he was given a two-year suspension by the U.S. Anti-Doping Association, causing him to miss the 2007 Worlds and the Olympics. The suspension will be over in July of this year.
This weekend, Warren will try to put the suspension behind him as he makes his MMA debut at DREAM 7's featherweight Grand Prix in Japan. His wrestling abilities will help him with some big throws, but he is facing a tough test in his first match in former WEC champ, Chase Beebe. Like Warren, Beebe started out in wrestling, and actually still has a brother wrestling at Central Michigan University. However, Beebe has had a much longer fighting career. Sunday's fight will show just what Warren has been doing with his time since being suspended.

Really? Joe Warren was at the North Pole? Because that's what literally being on top of the world would mean.

Very entertaining fight! Good for him.
Now he can stop by Amsterdam on his way home and smoke to his heart's content.
Maybe take a vacation to Spain, where they grow it on the rooftops and then finish off by skiing on the north american west coast, In BC where the skiing is as good as the buds.
He is one of the rare top caliber wrestlers in MMA in a sport where there are mediocre wrestlers galore.
Too many like Couture, Lesnar, Lashley were college wrestlers.
Warren is a world champion, big difference. I think Lindland has a world silver, and i think monson has some kind of hardware. kurt angle from fake wrestling actually won a world title as well in the real stuff.... He really lucked out that the japs are doing the jockey weights this year GP style. Im really more of a size queen (when a HW GP in the land of sushi) but a GP is always interesting if the matchups are good.
His standup is better than I expected.

NO, he was on top of the world FIGURATIVELY, or METAPHORICALLY. The only way you could justifiably say he was literally on top of the world would be if he was standing on top of Mt Everest at the time, which I can only assume he wasn't because it would be bloody hard to wrestle up there. The word literally is not just something you stick at the end of a sentence for emphasis.
I literally groan with exasperation every time I see people who are supposed to know how to write - people who do it for a living - throwing the word around like it's just a fancy exclamation point.
