Holy injuries, Batman! Bad luck or bad timing for MMA?

This week, the UFC lost its main event from UFC 106, as Brock Lesnar had to postpone the fight with Shane Carwin due to a prolonged illness. Though a fight between Anthony Johnson and Josh Koscheck was added to 106, the event lost some star power when they lost Lesnar.

But the run of injuries and illnesses didn't end there:

-- The Thiago Alves/Jon Fitch bout for UFC 107 is off due to Alves' knee injury.

-- Erin Toughill had to pull out of her Nov. 7 Strikeforce fight with Marloes Coenen, a bout that was likely going to decide who would challenge Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. Coenen will now face Roxanne Modafferi.

-- Kurt Pellegrino is out of "The Ultimate Fighter" finale bout with Frankie Edgar.

What happened? Did Dana White and Scott Coker have dinner under a ladder while staring into a broken mirror with a black cat criss crossing their path?

Nah. This is the consequence of having so many MMA events squeezed into a short time. In the next two months, the UFC, Strikeforce and WEC have ten events. With that many events, injuries to fighters are bound to happen.

Still, just to be sure, every MMA fighter with an upcoming bout may want to sprinkle some salt over their shoulder.

Weak. Was looking forward to Carwin Lesner and Alves v. Fitch. The other fights I could take or leave.

Too bad:
Alves V. Fitch would have been quite an interesting match up in the present (as Fitch TKO’d Alves in 06). I'm very curious to see how Alves comes back after his inability to deal with GSP (who is, obviously, a cut above the rest). Alves beat Kos in 08, but got utterly outclassed by GSP’s wrestling. I’m wondering how he adjusts, if at all, to that diversity.

LOL!!!! I luv how you try to downplay the Strikeforce Nov. 7 Awesomeness.........all 4 of their main event fights are on and poppin'. That fight with the girls can be moved to a challengers card or something. Nice try though
The only person who should be worried is Dana White/ UFC because of the Lesnar v. Carwin cancellation/rescheduled fight and now the Alves v. Fitch fight cancellation.
From what I am reading, they are not even trying to refund some of the money to fans that paid BIG MONEY to see Lesnar fight.......that is not a smart move as people are NOT gonna be happy paying that kind of money to now see a Tito v. Griffin fight.
AND to make matters worse, UFC/Dana is still running the commercial for the Lesnar v. Carwin fight, which is gonna sucker in more unsuspecting people to buy out-of-control priced tickets!!???!! That is not cool and the ufc should be ashamed of itself.

The only fight to look forward to know is Penn/Sanchez. i dont see a lot else that interests me. what other big fights are on the horizon and when?

I cant understand why UFC fighters trained so hard and knowing they have to fight in some main event or match that people are willing to watch over ppv. But lesnar vs Carwin was for sure dissapointed because i would like to watch lesnar getiing his ass kick by some young fighter not some over the hill that aint in there prime time..ohh please couture, mir 2 times, and the other pride fighter that aint challenge.....
Brock lesnar quit because aint ready to get his ass kick is like rashad evans they want to hold the belt longer because they have to say bye bye...

Bring in the Door vs. Kimbo (since Rampage isn't available). Now that's a PPV main event anyone will be willing to pay for.
Or better yet, Kimbo vs. Seth P. II: The Re-Match.
Look at the ratings draw from their televised fight.
Imagine how many people would buy the PPV just out of morbid curiosity.
I am sure Seth can get ready (or better yet, he cannot) and we all know from TUF 10 that Kimbo is ready to rock.
Attention Dana White, your table is ready.

Hey dont forget..that door spends more time in the gym than anyone I have ever seen. I think rampage is obviously too much for the door and maybe it should consider taking a few warmup fights, or maybe even drop a weight class or two. On the other hand, I hear the door is a longtime training partner of TODD DUFFEE, so you know the pain will be brought no matter what.

Barry, the Door vs. Kimbo would be a great match. Both are about equal in skills, although the door has more movement to it.
As much as the door spends all it's time at the gym, it really does nothing more then hang out watching others train, but it is locked in on it's commitment to being at the gym.
Also it can be open to a bou with just about anyone at this time.
But it is closed to the thought of a Rampage rematch at this time. After all, Rampage is filming the d-A-na Team.
But not to knock the door, I think it stands a better chance against Kimbo.
But who knows about a rematch with Rampage. We can only knock on wood at the thought of it.
I just hope it doesn't become a knob and start stalling any sort of match with contract negotiations.

again it comes down to a small stable of fighters under contract. If fighters were allowed to move around from one organization to organization without impunity and their records to recognized throughout the MMA spectrum. As long as the top 3 or 4 organization act like the other one doesn't exist and there fighters are "No GOOD" then each organization will continue to suffer from the dreaded "Lack of sufficient quality fighters pool". It's time to share talent between organizations at least at the non-title level. This way its easier to replace a down fighter with another quality opponent that's hungry and trying to make a name for himself. Another thing, when I practiced competive Judo, I practiced year round and was ready for a tournament within a few weeks. Why is it that these guys go on hiatus for months even when they win quick fights? Lesner beat Couture then waited 8 months to fight Mir and then 4 months till Carwin? If all 5 UFC champions fight every 4 months, 3 times per year (unless major injury of tough 4/5 round fight). That would be 15 title fights/yr headlining PPV UFC cards! I welcome your opinion guys

It is basically the headliners that are the ones that take some time off after their fights, and I figure they deserve it because they're training camp is most likely wayyy more extreme than what you put yourself through year round. No offense meant, just sayin it the way I see it.. And ask yourself this..If you just killed yourself for 4 months training for 25 minutes of war, and then got paid millions of dollars for it, I think you might take a little vaca for a few weeks too. :)

alves and fitch didnt really excite me. i dunno, guess im not sold on alves. but i only started watching him when he took on desouza (sp). i think hes overrated. Carwin-lesnar would have been cool for 6 seconds untill brock clinched him. vitor and silva... sigh thats gonna be 3-4 minutes of circling, then a a flurry and a winner. diego and penn is gonna be fun. i think mir will try to stand with kongo and pay the price. funny.... he starts training hard then losses. any mostapha al turk fans in the house? HAHA! didnt think so

i also think shields and miller will be awesome too. its funny... might be awkward if shields whips his ass and then goes back on his show rofl. Brown and aldo might be good too. there are some solid fights coming up. ive never been a fedor nut hugger. i dont really care to watch him untill he fights someone worth watching.. and the only one i watched live was him an arlovski. not trying to piss off fedor lovers... i think the guy is a great fighter. but ive only been watching mma since 2006 so im still new... point being... i dont think fedor-rogers is as exciting as some other matches coming up

Well if the UFC doesn't do something quick to get the up and coming younger fighters more exposure there depth of viable main card contenders and title challergers are quickly disapprearing. The UFC can do this by offering more 1 fight lucrative contracts to independant fighte from Europe/Japan and even here state wise. I don't have all the answers and welcome other suggestion on how the UFC can improve there product and get back on tract as the premier MMA organozation it once was!

Umm consequence for squeezing so many events in a short time period? That has nothing to do with the injuries you tard. It's not like the fighters who are injured, or in Lesnars' case "ill", have been fighting on every card. I mean it's been how long since these fighters entered the ring? Lesnar and Alves haven't fought since UFC 100. I mean come on, that may be the dumbest comment I have ever seen. How are you even allowed to print BS like this?
