When Strikeforce hits Chicago this Saturday, they will have one of the world's best fighters, Fedor Emelianenko, leading the card, but that doesn't mean that there won't be plenty of Windy City fighters in bouts at the Sears Centre. As is their custom, Strikeforce has filled the undercard with local fighters.

Leading the pack is World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Jeff Curran (pictured). He was cut from the WEC after losses to Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, Joseph Benavidez and Takeya Mizugaki. Along with Miguel Torres, Curran has a huge role in building Chicago's fight scene. Curran is the promoter for XFO, a group that puts fights on in Chicagoland and has featured many up-and-coming fighters from the area. He will try to end his losing streak against Dustin Neace.

Mark Miller is another undercard fighter who has long been a Chicago fight fixture. He fought for the Chicago Red Bears in the International Fight League, and now trains with Team Dino Costeas on Chicago's near west side. You may remember him from season nine of "The Ultimate Fighter," where he fought his friend Kevin Knabijan to get on the show, but then was knocked out by Nick Osipczak. Including the TUF fights, Miller has wins over Josh Neer and Brad Blackburn, and could use a win this Saturday over Deray Davis to get back on track.

Filling the card with local fighters is such a smart strategy by Strikeforce. It ensures local MMA fans will want to get to the fights early. Curran's gym is not far from the Sears Centre, and John Kolocsi and Miller's students, friends, family and fans won't mind the trip to the 'burbs to see the fighters on a large stage like this one.

At the same time, Strikeforce can use the undercard of these events to check out fighters to sign to their Challengers series. Tyron Woodley first fought for Strikeforce when he fought on the undercard of their show in his hometown of St. Louis. They wisely snapped him up, and he will headline the Challengers show in Kansas City on Nov. 20.

Nice, but i think all promotions try to get local fighters out there when traveling to a new place.

cool maggie....thanks. although i do seem to remember a similar post the last time a major mma event came to chicago, if i recall correctly the result wasn't too great for the local guys....hopefully your follow-up piece will be a little less gloomy this time and will highlight a string of native W's.

Mike, just heard from the CBS/Showtime peeps, and yes, Saturday's card will show on the Armed Forces Network. So will Friday's Challengers card. Thanks for everything you do out in the big sandbox!

Heh, Forget the Strikeforce Card for a second, Chicago has bigger problems by the name John Salmons. I swear, if this guy isnt missing shots by the bunches, hes turning the ball over like its going out of style. Rose is still trying to work his preseason in since he missed all but one game, so I realize as a fan we've gotta be patient and wait out Derrick, however Salmons is miserable. He may try to play more Defense than Gordon, and Gordon may basically be a shooting specialist, but for starters its been more Visually appeasing to watch Ben Gordon over Salmons, plus he has proven he could score more as a 6th man than Salmons can with 5 more minutes a game as a starter. Granted, i can concede with Gordon in the lineup on Sunday, Miami either wouldve been buried early by 20-30 Points, or, Miami wouldve torched the Bulls for worse, and possibly turned it up earlier than they did, but this is getting frustrating. Reinsdorf should stop screwing around in Glendale AZ and prepare to go to the Luxury Tax this offseason, afterall I'm hearing Rumors Summer 2010 is probably the best year to do so...I dunno, the only Non-Home Team Ive grown up cheering for, 10 years ago I thought they would never lose, but now after Jay Williams/Chandler/Curry/Artest/Ben Wallace/Elton Brand cycled though here we may have been one big athletic body from, not so much winning an NBA Title, but going on a shocking New Orleans Hornets type run of 2-3 years ago when Chris Pauls team first broke out, i was thinking at least 6-7 games into East Semis, possible trip to the Eastern Finals, but i dunno, its only 3 games and I've read a little stuff you've talked about in Chicago Sports, Havent had any Bulls fans to talk to up here in Michigan since...... you guessed it, Jordan Retired....I dunno, displeasure with at least the last two games, You seemed like a better voice to take my Bulls problems to than Skeets or Dryer, sorry it was on the MMA Forum.....
....But Anyways, looking forward to this event, 3of5 UFC events wind up being fairly decent entertainment, but it seems like ever single WEC Event ive seen has been fairly good, and the one Strikeforce event Ive seen wasnt too shabby (First time I saw Milendez fight, seemed like an awesome fighter to watch further), should be interesting, Rodgers could be Brian Bowles, someone who on one given night, picks up the Win in a Fight against Fedor which if simulated on a computer, that Win would probably happen 2 out of 15 times simmed, or Rodgers could be Arlovski or any of his other victims, It should be interesting, then again I could be wrong, MMA isnt really my thing (Translation to that sentence: I like watching MMA and understand the basics, I know some of the fighters, ect., but what i mean by its not my thing is, I cant sit down yet and break down every movement a fighter could potentially make in open guard like I can If I'm sitting there watching the Detroit Lions attempt to run a screen, I can pretty much see at that moment the defense is about to force Culpepper into something stupid (INT on a F'n Screen, taken for a TD)), but yeah, should be interesting night....

I really think SF and CBS should have promoted/advertised more than just Fedor for the fights this weekend. I know the fighters from SF aren't as well known as the fighters in the UFC and I know more people know about Fedor than the other fighters but it would have been nice to get more pub for guys like Shields and Mousasi. If they build Fedor up so much and then he gets beat....that's not good for SF.

JJ it's all about name recognition for pulling in MMA fans. If they are going after the UFC, they are using their biggest name on the card.
And with all the recent headlines about his not signing with the UFC, Fedor is that name for them.
If they were to promote Gerard or Jake, the new or casual MMA FAN would say who the hell are they?
Honestly I thought they would have promoted Mayhem more with the MTV generation. Bully Beatdown is drawing descent numbers, and his name is recognizable.
Anyway it looks to be a great night.
I for one cannot wait for Saturday to get here.

doesn't every promotion typically try to find local folks to headline and fight on the cards? ex: couture, leben, ed herman in Portland, Torres, Curran on the WEC Chicago card. I would say it's more necessary for strikeforce than the ufc given strikeforce's lighter roster and need to bring in local draws based on the lukewarm (as far as draws go) names on the main ticket.

Shields is on a few of the Bully Beatdown shows too. Promo of a Miller/shields i would have thought to have been a big priority. not quite as much as Fedor but definately should be promo'd alot more than it has. plus it should be a good fight as both those fighters fight hard and have talent.
and fedors punches may come from another zipcode but they arrive faster than instant messaging. ask AA, he was in midflight and never even saw it comming. out before he could even get a foot to touch the ground again. in fact most of the crowd didnt even see it happen it was so fast. they were like... WTF just happened. why is AA on the ground and not moving. whats going on here? then they watched the replay, and all you hear is ... OHHHHHHHH from the crowd and lots of cheering.
    now thats fast!!! hahahah
