Sounders, Dynamo play 0-0 draw in playoff opener

Preview | Box Score | Recap

SEATTLE (AP)—Sounders part owner Drew Carey wasn’t cracking jokes. He was spewing anger in an elevator.

Freddie Ljungberg said he didn’t know what the referee was doing. Teammate Nate Jaqua played with blood gushing down his face. And the largest opening-round crowd in MLS playoff history roared incessantly, as if it was a freewheeling shootout—not a 0-0 draw.

Blood, noise, yellow cards and a disputed whistle outnumbered scoring chances as expansion Seattle made its MLS postseason debut with a scoreless tie against the more experienced and bullish Houston Dynamo on Thursday night.

“It’s not rugby. It’s still soccer,” said an annoyed Ljungberg, the Swedish star and veteran of England’s Premier League.

The fourth scoreless tie for each team this season means this home-and-home, aggregate-goals round and berth in the one-game conference final will be settled by a simple, most-goals-wins match Nov. 8 in Houston, where the Dynamo are 4-1 in the playoffs. They also have the league’s best home winning percentage over the last four seasons.

“We’ll see how the game gets interpreted differently down there,” said Seattle’s Sigi Schmid, the MLS leader in career coaching wins with 19 in his time with Los Angeles and Columbus. “Maybe things will be different a little bit.”

“I’m puzzled,” an angry Schmid said of the calls by Ricardo Salazar, noting the referee gave Seattle three yellow cards for six fouls and Houston three for 18 fouls.

The upstart Sounders missed an opportunity against the tired Dynamo, who were playing their fourth game in 12 days. Seattle couldn’t take advantage of dominating possession, or the energy created by 35,807 fans at Qwest Field. It was the largest crowd for a conference semifinal playoff match in MLS’ 13-year history.

Most of the rowdy fans were standing, singing and chanting and waving signs such as “Welcome to Green Hell” throughout the chilly night.

Lead owner and Hollywood filmmaker Joe Roth attended, and actor Carey wore a white team cap and one of the green-and-blue team scarves that were everywhere in the stadium and atop freeway overpasses around the city.

“We feel the tie benefits us more,” Houston All-Star Brad Davis said. “Our plan was to match the intensity of their team, especially coming into a crowd with 35,000 people, and not give them much room to operate. We knew we were coming into a hostile environment.”

Houston, seeking its third league title in four seasons, brought its own hostility.

The two stingiest defenses during the regular season—29 goals against each in 31 games—bulled through 60 minutes. There were only two prime scoring chances in that span.

Former Dynamo player Patrick Ianni, who started because Tyrone Marshall had a sprained knee, headed a shot off the crossbar in the 43rd minute on long free kick by Ljungberg. In the 58th minute, Davis had his shot from the top of the penalty area poked away with a right hand by diving goalkeeper Kasey Keller.

In the 16th minute, Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad bulled Fredy Montero, Seattle’s top scorer, to the ground in front of the goal after a whistle.

“It was a bowling ball and a bowling pin,” Schmid huffed.

Onstad received a yellow card, and later said he deserved it. Montero, who was playing ill, got carded for racing up off the turf and charging at his 41-year-old opponent.

Ljungberg, who missed on numerous passes early in his first MLS playoff game, told Onstad at the end of the skirmish, “You know better than that.” Houston’s Brian Mullan then yanked Seattle’s Jhon Kennedy Hurtado away from the scrum with his arm around Hurtado’s neck.

The raucous crowd lustily booed Onstad each time he touched the ball after that.

Eleven minutes later, Houston’s Ricardo Clark kicked former Dynamo forward Nate Jaqua above his left eye. Blood trickled down his face into the second half, when the most impressive player in the match summoned trainers to wrap the circumference of his head. Seattle’s 2008 expansion draft pick from Houston also had to change his bloodstained jersey, into one with no name or number on the back.

“That’s what I expect,” Jaqua said of the Dynamo. “They’ve been good in the playoffs because they are physical.”

Jaqua broke free on Onstad in the 77th minute and put the ball in the net, but Salazar had whistled Mullan for a foul behind the play, on Ljungberg near midfield.

“I don’t know what the referee was doing,” Ljungberg said. “He’d let that go before. If you want to give the yellow card, you let that play go and then give the card. I can’t say too much. I need to play the last few games.”

Here are the facts, Sounders tied the Dynamo 0-0, the ref sucked, the Sounders were bullied by the Dynamo.
On the positive side Seattle won the US Open Cup on the road, Seattle beat Columbus breaking their home win streak.
This team can and will win anywhere! Beware Houston, we are coming, and will woop your fat Texas ass!
    Peace,

Galaxy fan here. Enjoy watching Houston play and love to see what Seattle has brought to the MLS in its first season. Gives me hope for continued improvement in the league, which despite its critics, is making steady progress.

Exciting game last night, but the play was a bit sloppy, but not too surprising considering the defenses of both teams. I do think the atmosphere had everyone a bit amped up... I think the ref was initially overwhelmed and also as evidenced by Onstad's inexplicable reaction. That said, I think a yellow was appropriate. Montero did a fine job of selling it, but he wasn't pushed that hard. Much better to issue the yellows and let the game be settled by the players... especially being the playoffs. I do think the ref ought to have pulled the team's captains together at that point and explain any more nonsense would draw a red. Might have mitigated the stuff that followed.

What are you gonna say about the lack of continuation on that play by Jaqua... pretty embarassing really and I am certain the ref knows it. But... all in all, I think the final score reflected the play of both teams in that game. Neither one really ever established themselves, so now it comes down to one game. Ought to be a good one and look forward to seeing the winner against the Galaxy.

While I agree the Sounders need to get past the lousy ref. But isn't seem to be the case that there have been a lot of blown calls this season against the Sounders? Lundberg gets regularly fouled hard and the ref just ignores it. The Houston goalie should be suspended for his behavior. Period. There was absolutely no excuse. Maybe you don't red card him but the league should suspend just like any other professional sports leagues do.

I wonder if the MLS can get EPL refs on loan next season before the EPL season starts. I would be interesting to see if there is a big difference in the quality of calls with Euros refs making the call. What do you think MLS officials?

I agree you don't red card the goalie for something like that 15 minutes into the game. If he punched him, yes.

Boohoo. Oh no seattle for once things didn't go your way. Thats how it goes. The only reason ya'll beat us in the regular season this year was because of a blown call. All the MLS refs are terrible so suck it up we all have to deal with it

Holy crap on both sides, yes the ref sucked blls but still this is a game, and one that most fans want to see played well, but common now, neither team delivered and thats what it is, get over the refs at this point, game over, but honestly bring them back cuzz whatever , the fact Houston D's are gonna loose and life moves on sorry H fans but, were faster, better offense, and can totally match up with your D, which is what your grade would be in the last nights meeting. So take your everything is bigger in Texas and shuv it up your big ......... fill in the blanks

Salazar needs a time out and Joe Machnik, MLS Chief of Refs, has been delinquent for years by not putting the MLS refcorps on the same page of consistency. Salazar was totally inconsistent in assessing cards and protecting the players. The game had its moments, plenty of spirit and some miserable decision making on the part of several Sounder players. Freddy L was under more pressure than usual and no teammates could figure out what to do in order to relieve the presuure on him. Not too many scoring opportunities, not because of the defenses, but because no team in the MLS averaged more than 1.65 goals per game; not according to TV commentators Harkes and Dellacamera who were nausciously suffocating while the third man on the field, Allen Hopkins, was spot on, laconic and refreshing. Seems that the ESPN soccer kahunas have a solid soccer commentator in Hopkins and keep on showcasing two of their morphed stars who bring nothing to the table but boring exchanges.

Seattle vs La would be a good matchup. Galaxy should have no problem with Chivas. Chivas has Kljestan and not much else.

The fans were great. They looked like soccer hooligans, hardcore fans from Europe. Everywhere in the stadium were greenish, and they were rowdy with chanting and drum beating. There were alot of cheers and jeers. The game last night was fantastic and I love it.

We (sounders) needed to get a goal last night but maybe the tie and tough play will get them motivated for the next game. Both teams will be up for it. It appears that refs/officials in every pro sports league are not up to snuff, esp. for the playoffs. This needs to change--the refs/umps/officials cannot be the reason why one team wins and one loses. Last night's ref let things go out of control. Missed the crappy move by the Houston goalie but red carding him would really have tipped the balance (even if it would have favored Seattle). I see another tie, OT and a shoot out coming.

Wait, you haven't heard? Sounders only get bad refs, they only play dirty teams and the league is out to get them cuz they're so good! Wait you mean you haven't heard that they get screwed cuz everybody's jealous? I tell you, lose an NBA team and people just get delusional...

Pretty good game by Mls standards. I saw most of the second half. Mls playoffs are improving now that practically every team doesn't make it. Crowd was very good. I think either one of these teams could take beat the Galaxy on a good day.

Sounders fan seem to have forgotten the first Dynamo game in Seattle. The Dynamos without key players were victimized by a blown call by refs - the call was on a goal that was called back. And they are now howling about poor officiating.

To the MLS Head Official: If you can not provide knowledgeable teams to referee the playoff matches, outsource the work.
I would also like to see the assessment of the referee teams be made public.

I think the league need to start testing the refs for drugs cause the roids that ref was using is definetly effecting his vision and judgement. Although it did make it a even 12 on 12 cause in Seattle they gonna need an extra player just to keep it fair. Houston is a dirty team, so it will be nice to see them lose in there home next week. Oh yeah and houston don't think just cause you going home there won't be any Sounders fans cause Sounder fans are the most loyal fans. There will be more then the five houston fans that were in Seattle. We will hear there chants in houston, thats for sure. Seaaaaaaattle... SOUNDERS...Seaaaaaattle... SOUNDERS...Seaaaaaaaattle...SOUNDERS!!!! Oh yeah and Boooooooooo Onstead, ugly schmuk, Keller will whoop you any day of the week!!

referee blew it, big time. but hey, isn't that common in all sports nowadays? especially in the playoffs. i give the level of play on the field a C, add in the bouncy turf and overall it was a D. the fans brought their A game, the players and refs didn't. what a shame. i was pumped for the game and afterwards, well, not much to say about anything except the ref blew it and the play was sloppy.

Yes I am, I know I am. I am a Sounder til I die. Sorry Dynamo you are a great team but we knocked you out of the Open Cup and we will do it in the MLS Cup. Oh and that Semi was without Ljunberg. And you might want to send Salazar a nice piece of candy for Halloween, cause his tricks were your guys' treats. 3 cards for 18 fouls and 3 cards for 8 fouls is definitely a fair (at least Evans was professional, Onstad is a great goalie but a chump move). Watch for Ljungber and Zakuani next game. Sounders 3-1, yeah thats right, I'll give you guys a consolation goal.

Hey now you have two really good teams playing against each other and in all fairness they are going for the glory, there was some bad play by all, yes the officiating was crap, but all in all it was a dog fight by both sides, however if Seattle can maintain that intensity they for sure will shut up Houston because well sorry Dynamo you lost in the running man and well your gonna lose this one as well.

@ Michael Scott: We're upset because that is clearly a play where you play the advantage or at least see if there is an advantage before blowing the whistle. The ball was on it's way into the box with a guy running onto it. Saying Jaqua wouldn't score is only a guess, we don't know because Salazar sucks.
I will give credit to Houston though, they know playing a physical game is the way to beat us and did a good job. I hope the game in Houston is a little more wide open. I also love watching Rico and Holden in the middle of the field together. Too bad they'll both be out of MLS and in Europe next year.
