Donovan leads and everyone follows to lift Galaxy

SEATTLE (AP)—Landon Donovan looked zoned out behind the table, microphone in his face, lights glaring into his eyes, talking about a season that’s gone so right for himself and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Finally, he paused and almost asked permission to speak candidly. To really say why a Galaxy team that was so dysfunctional a year ago and this year was surrounded by distraction now finds itself playing Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup final on Sunday.

“There are a few points that stand out to me. One was having (coach) Bruce (Arena) come in and just create stability, which we hadn’t had for a while. And candidly, the second was David’s reaction to everything that’s gone on,” Donovan said with David Beckham seated beside him. “Life is about choices. He could have come in and chosen to be something different than he has been. He chose to be a man and want this team to be successful. Without him, we’re not where we are.”

The gamble Major League Soccer embarked on in 2007, when Beckham made his MLS debut to help boost the game in America for a price tag that still causes whiplash from the double-takes, could pay off on Sunday.

Though Beckham’s decision to leave Real Madrid for Hollywood was greeted with much skepticism, there was hope that his talents would draw increased interest in the league, victories on the field and ultimately titles for the Galaxy.

Now comes that opportunity for Beckham to help deliver a title for the league’s marquee team against a scrappy, overlooked squad from Utah.

“I’ve been able to play in great leagues and play for big teams, and winning championships and cups with those teams is always exciting,” Beckham said. “And so is this. This is the first time I’ve been in the playoffs and the first time I’ve been in the MLS Cup. I’m proud to be on this team.”

When Beckham arrived this summer after finishing his loan to AC Milan, he returned to the Galaxy during their tipping point. They spent the early stages of the season scuffling on the field, learning how to play with one another under Arena’s guidance, drawing 11 of their first 13 games. Donovan was the clear leader, but he missed a chunk of the acclimation period while helping the U.S. reach the final of the Confederation Cup.

Then there was the controversy sparked by Donovan’s comments in Grant Wahl’s “The Beckham Experiment,” a book chronicling and critical of Beckham’s first two seasons with the Galaxy. Donovan criticized Beckham’s leadership and effort in the book.

The first day the two were together in Los Angeles, Donovan apologized to the English star for airing his thoughts in public. Los Angeles had won four straight when Beckham arrived and instead of letting a possible locker room issue linger the two stars got their differences settled immediately.

“It’s just been one of those years where there has been obstacles,” Beckham said “And it’s about how teams and individuals respond to those obstacles. Some are bigger than others.

“We’ve responded in the right way—we’ve done it on the field and kept quiet off it. Whether that’s annoyed people or not, it’s made us happy.”

While the Galaxy and their starry duo gather the headlines ahead of the final, the playoffs run by Real Salt Lake is worth just as much recognition. After finishing with a losing record in the regular season, Real ousted defending champion Columbus and Chicago.

“We just kind of peaked at the right time. It was like that last year and again this year; we wait until the end of the season to play well,” Real midfielder Andy Williams said. “It’s paying off right now.”

Los Angeles also sparked late in the season, after Beckham arrived. More importantly, Donovan says Beckham provided the creativity to spark the Galaxy’s attack, and let the supporting cast around the star-studded duo contribute without needing to exceed their capabilities.

“(David’s) a great guy and loves to play this game and takes a lot of pride in his performance and the attitude and the play he’s brought to our team this year has been remarkable,” said Arena, who is going after his third MLS title.

After years of being considered the best player in America, Donovan added his first league MVP award on Thursday. The honor might be as much a recognition of his leadership in turning around last year’s league-worst L.A. squad, and the handling of the fallout from his comments about Beckham. Donovan’s teammates rave about his demeanor this season and his willingness to be out front and let the younger members of the Galaxy’s roster follow his lead.

Ultimately, they say the relationship between Donovan and Beckham is a huge factor in why the Galaxy are playing for their first title since 2005.

“The way that he’s led this team has been remarkable. I don’t want to call it a transformation of Landon as a player, but to see how he’s taken that game to his next level,” Galaxy midfielder Chris Klein said. “This year he was very determined to carry this team. Not do everything by himself, but do whatever the team needed. He’s done that the whole year on the field, in the locker room, he’s been a true leader for this team.”

The worst move the Galaxy ever made was to get Lady Donovan and trade Carlos Ruiz. Carlos Ruiz could score in many ways even with pks. Lady Donovan usually scores only with pks. Teams win with goals and Carlos Ruiz scored goals. Remember Ruiz scored 32 goals in 32 games, has anybody in the mls done that?

Why does everyone think this guy has any talent???? He's never been the player so many deluded people seem to think he is. He's going to try Europe... again, and run out with his tail between his legs... again. He's got this attitude like he's too good to play in MLS, but he hasn't really shown the consistency that demonstrates he even belongs in MLS. The missed PK (how do you miss a PK???) is just the tip of the iceberg. Kudos to the Galaxy for making it to the Final. Bruce Arena and David Beckham were the primary engines of their success. Donovan is a spoiled little kid who ruined it for his team. Maybe a little more time training and observing your superiors, and less time on the phone with your agent finding out if anyone overseas is interested. You're lucky the Galaxy have put up with you so far, twerp!
Oh, and by the way, anyone who thinks that MLS is even close to the level of performance seen in EPL, La Liga, Serie A, etc. has obviously not seen enough games to make an intelligent assessment. MLS is, on a good day, on a par with Championship 2 (3rd Division). If you don't believe me, get tickets to a friendly between an MLS team and a top flight Euro side. Get there early and watch the warm-ups. MLS players warm-up like under-achieving college kids. Euro sides are disciplined and focused. When they play, there is an economy of movement that reflects far superior training, while MLS players flop all over the place and are out of breath by the 60th minute.

Donovan missed a kick, and now everyone hates his guts. Typical bandwagon riders that love you when you do well..will criticize you when you make mistakes. Donovan is the league's MVP, he's the USMNT's captain, and he's a down to earth athlete, unlike the ghetto scum bags in the NBA, the caribbean elitist in the MLB, and the criminals in the NFL. Donovan should get a transfer to a UCL team. I think he'd fit in well in Lyon, Marseilles, or PSG, maybe Valencia or Sevilla, in England maybe Everton w/ Tim, or Liverpool as they need all the help they can get b4 Torres goes to one of the top 4 euro teams. I don't think he'd be needed in Chelsea, but it would be a great strategy for any team to acquire the most popular American soccer player.

So, COPAmundial, Landon is a "Looser", you say? Should he be a "Tighter" instead? Because, you see, he could be looser, but when he took the PK, he seemed a little tight--which would make him tighter, not looser...but only a loser would would mix those two words up. You know, loser?

And those of you who complain about the MLS playoff format, use your little brains (I know it's hard) and think about how you would do a relegation format with a league that is not even 15 years old. USL is a separate entity--not associated with MLS other than the US Open Cup. Unless USL and MLS can agree to relegation using teams from both leagues, and unless there is enough money to sustain this, it ain't gonna happen. What monetary resources (that's "money" for those of you who need a little help) would you use today to sustain lower leagues to accomodate this structure?

And for those who say MLS sucks, compared to what? EPL, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga? Well, duh!! THAT's a great analysis, Einsteins?!! MLS does not, however, suck compared to many other leagues. I've been to matches all over the world to see top league matches in Netherlands, Austria, France, Belgium and even Mexico, and while MLS is not better than these (and maybe not as good overall), it's not much worse. And the improvement in MLS since its creation has been phenominal (that means, like, great or special or really really good...or impressive even.)

So, take your criticisms and think a little about how foolish you sound when you say things like, "MLS sucks, man!!" "It's not nearly as good as EPL!" "Why don't MLS have relegation. They're terrible!!!

Those of you who say those things sound like idiots. Other than that, you're all lovely people. Thanks! I'll be here all week...

This final has potential. Let's hope both teams leave it on the pitch and the TV commentary of Dellacamera & Harkes doesn't suffocate the game with irrelvant chatter. Let the game speak for itself.

Donovan leads? What a @#$% joke. Little man is jealous of the star, complains about it to an idiot author, star is above it all and appeases the situation, the end. Donovan is the PK master, this team could not score or win a game until Beckham returned. Kudo's to Bruce for getting a real goalkeeper and fixing the D.

If the Galaxy win, the MLS gets a little more respect,....if RSL wins, the MLS seems like a joke where an under .500 team can win the championship. This kind of nonsense would never happen in Europe, South America or anywhere else. I hope the Galaxy win.

Even though I'm a Galaxy fan, I agree with some of the stuff you said RSL Fan. RSL may have been the last of the teams to make it in the playoffs, but that doesn't make them a bad team, and I'm not understanding all the critics about MLS's plyaoffs and about RSL making it in, they earned it. It's just like the Superbowl, there's one game to decide it. MLS playoffs are no different really than the playoffs in basketball or baseball. The first place teams don't always win the whole thing. Either way, I hope LA wins it all. This is their year! Go Galaxy!

You can look at it however you like, but the truth of the matter is...Real Salt Lake was only 8 points behind LA (essentially 2 wins and 2 ties less). On paper, LA is not any better than RSL. RSL forced more goals than LA did, and was in the top 5 for least amount of goals allowed in the total league. If you didn't look at the final tally for the season, LA had ONLY ONE more win than RSL did on the season.

From a striker perspective: RSL's top striker (Findley) had just as many goals as LA's( Donavon) with 12 goals on the season. If you look at the stats, RSL outshot & scored their opponents on a ratio, much higher than LA did over their opposition.

Goals Scored = RSL 43 Opposition 35 = 19% more goals than opposition
Goals Scored = LA 36 Opposition 31= 14% more goals than opposition

Shots on Goal = RSL 184 Opposition 130 = 29% more shots on goal than opposition
Shots on Goal = LA 137 Opposition 130 = 5% more shots on goal than opposition

LA has a 26% conversion ratio (how many goals to shots on goals) to RSL's 23% conversion ratio.

From a defensive perspective, RSL's defense kept their opponents conversion ratio to 27%, while LA held their opponents to 24%.

    That was the regular season:

During the playoffs, RSL forced 15 shots on goal and a total of 4 goals = 27% conversion ratio
Opposition conversion ratio = 11% ratio
During the playoffs, LA forced 18 shots on goal and a total of 5 goals = 27% conversion ratio
Opposition conversion ratio = 18% ratio

With all these stats above, one could reasonable come to a conclusion that Real Salt Lake has a stronger defense than LA, and both teams offenses are pretty much on par. At the end of the day, tomorrow afternoon, when one team is standing on the stage accepting the MLS Cup, is when the rest of us will actually know who is the better team....

    GO REAL SALT LAKE!

Well may the best team on that one day decide the fate of who is best in the MLS. It's too bad the system allows it to come down to this and you hope that both teams have their best day on the field so it will be competitive and then the difference will be truly who is the best team which it should be Galaxy based on them being more consistent for a whole season than RSL.

#5 I agree with you on most of your points, but you have to realize that leagues with relegation have been around for hundreds of years. That's why they can afford to loose teams to the 2cnd division.

I don't see what it matters if RSL made it in the playoffs and why it is such a big deal. They needed 8 teams. If they're a bad team, they'll be eliminated right away. No biggie. As soon as the number of teams increases, more and more of the better teams will make it in, but until then, it's the 8 teams with the best record. RSL beat FC Dallas, New York, San Jose and others so they deserve to be in the playoffs. If they make a comeback and win, then it shows more and more that they deserve it. Either way, I'm a Galaxy fan, so it'll be LA winning that MLS Cup this year. Go LA!

Overall, I don't see there being much that separates these two teams and anticipate a close match. Hopefully both teams go out looking to attack. Honestly, I don't think too many fans who are familiar with the nature of football and know anything about these two teams see this finals as being at all one sided except maybe yahoo writers whose knowledge of MLS consists of reviewing the season's standings so they can write the article. RSL has been pretty impressive in the playoffs, are on a roll and looking pretty dangerous.

    but... Go Galaxy!!... hehe
