MLS Cup to remain at a neutral site for now

NEW YORK (AP)—The MLS Cup will remain a neutral-site championship.

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber said Monday the league discussed changing the format to reward the higher-seeded team with the home field.

But MLS decided to keep the neutral venue, saying it provides an “exciting environment” for fans and allows for easier planning.

The league plans to announce the site for the 2010 MLS Cup in the next few months. Garber says the league will continue to consider the idea of a team playing for the title at its home stadium.

Championship game should go to the topseeded team like it's done all over the world. Don't try to feed us football or hockey disguised as soccer. Until this is done, soccer in America will be nothing but garbage.

I have to agree with Robin D, he hit it right on the head. But why is everyone comparing the MLS with other soccer leagues around the world though? MLS has been around since 1996......1996! That's nothing compared to European leagues. And that's a baby league compared to MLB, NBA, and NFL.....even the NHL. Especially for a sport that's never really been promoted here in the US. The MLS does need to sign better players, but no one can really say ALL US players are terrible, that's ridiculous, otherwise the US wouldn't even qualify for the World Cup and players like Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard wouldn't be starting in EPL teams. If the US does well in this World Cup and the MLS signs younger and more talented players from all over the world, and networks like ESPN and FSC showed more MLS games and went into depth more about the teams and players, in time soccer will grow here in the US. With new soccer dedicated stadiums and teams being added to the MLS, that's at least a start in the right direction. It'll take time for the MLS to become bigger, the league and the sport itself is relatively new here, give it time before you start comparing it to European leagues.

    MLS Rules!! Go L.A. Galaxy!

I hate to say it but, Real Salt Lake had 11 wins, 12 losses and 7 draws. 7 draws=7 points=2 wins=enough points to qualify for playoffs. If you can't follow the rules and complexities of the game of soccer, why are you trying to comment about it?

I'd like to see the higher seeded team win home field advantage for MLS Cup. This would have helped Galaxy since the Seattle fans all supported the "underdog." But, I do see the advantages of giving people more time to plan a trip to the Cup.

Unlike football and baseball, there are no so called strong teams or weak teams in soccer, That's why a team with the losing records could win it all. Most of the soccer games ended up with the scores of 0-0 or 1-0. Unlike football, soccer teams can't really blow another team out by large margins and that's why you can't really classify strong and weak teams in soccer. Again, I don't understand why anybody love to watch the scoreless games so much. Soccer indeed is the worst sport in the world.

One reason the MLS is so bad is that most of their players are drafted out of college and by then they are too old!!!!

A champion with a losing record, hahahahahahahaha!!!!

Abraham, you know nothing about soccer when it comes to Beckham. If he was bad then why has he played for TOP teams in Europe and his national team?

He is just surrounded by terrible players like Kline and Donovan (lady Donovan who misses when he should not)

first of all congrats 2 the RSL team for there win..... as for the league being compare to the rest of the worlds primere teams its out of the questions for the momments or any near future... bringing this so call star at the end of there soccer life is out of the question... the league is just waisting money... it might bring in money like in beckhams casebut the soccer is not going to get any better, he is a limited player... they are exceptions that have come into the league and have given MLS soccer life the cases are a few... some samples Valderama, Cinfuegos.... and Blanco... these players have vision of how the game should be played... guys like beckham are all over u can find 100 just like that in any corner of the world for every one elite player.... in Donovans defense he is one of the best players in the USA... at this momment he is the best complete player for the USA , but most dont see him for that because he diss beckham..........

Besides, how can anyone hate a sport that doesn't have eight or ten time-outs per half? They play continuously unless someone gets hurt. American football is fine when they're actually doing something. But in a sixty minute game there's maybe ten minutes or real action. I like basketball, when they're actually playing and not standing on the sidelines talking. And how can anyone who watches baseball call soccer boring? Get a grip.

There are a few things I'd like to say.
    1) Why do people who hate soccer continually get on these pages and make negative comments about the sport? It's their choice not to like the game, but why irritate the rest of us with their stupid comments? Leave it alone. I don't care for golf or tennis, but I don't go on those pages calling golfers and tennis players @#$%s or girlie men. I still respect the skills it takes to play those sports.
    2) Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. And yes, despite what many Americans think the rest of the world does matter. If you win the World Cup you truly are the world champion. Millions of people all over the globe watch the Super Bowl and the World Series. Billions of people all over the globe watch the World Cup final. Many people in foreign countries have never heard of the Yankees or the Steelers, but they do know Manchester United and Real Madrid.
    3) Soccer isn't as popular in the US as it is in the rest of the world. We all know that. Many Americans view soccer as being a foreign sport, which also means that it's inferior. They criticize the game without knowing a damn thing about it. With the possible exception of NBA players there aren't any athletes in US major sports that can top soccer players when it comes to athleticism. The vast majority of NFL and MLB players would be gasping for air before the first half was over.

If you want to measure a sport's significance by fan support and TV audience, there is no comparison to soccer - American Football is not even close.

American soccer is significantly behind the rest of world because we've never given it the support it deserves. MLS is more comparable to the 2nd and 3rd tier leagues in England, Spain, Germany, Italy and Brazil than it is to their top "premier" leagues.

The MLS final was a well-played game. LA has more talent and experience but could not get it done in regular time or overtime. Donavan choked (and as others have pointed out, this is not his first time) and gave Real Salt Lake the chance which they grabbed. Lost in all the discussion of American football vs. international football (real football) is the fact that the best team the US can field for international competition is led by Landon Donavan, who will ultimately finish his career with the most CAPS but will never lead the team to any significant international victories. He is a second tier player.

In the US we love winners. Until we are able to field the highest caliber athletes on our international team, we will be fielding a team comprised of players who cannot even play in the premier leagues around the world.

Anyone that argues that football is better or more popular then soccer is either delusional or just blind. I hate to point out facts, but football is only played in three countries across the globe. America, Canada, and Germany are the only countries that have a pro football league. The funny thing is that none of those countries claim football as there national sport.

The reason soccer isn't more popular in the US is because there is a ridiculous amount of obese people who would rather play football where you dont have to constantly move around. As much as I dont like soccer, its pretty funny how everyone rips on the game when they probably wouldnt last 20minutes in a game.

The reason soccer is the most popular sport in the world is because most of the world's population lives in China, India and Africa where no one can afford football pads, helmets, shoes, and a ball in the shape of an oblate spheroid. But you can make a soccer ball out of a wad of trash, dung of the proper consistency, a coconut or a human skull, hence the popularity. Ultimately sport is a simulation of battle, and football players are the alpha warriors. Soccer players are more like medics or nurses.

BLANCO is a dive-artist pig, and if he did miss a PK, he would probably roll on the ground for 5 minutes until they gave him another chance. Good riddance to him - despite his skill he makes me sick.

    Nicky - classic
    Landon - choke

The only clueless person here is you. Again outside the USA, soccer is more popular. The leagues in Europe are lot better than the MLS. The following for soccer in the USA is pretty low. However go to England, Germany, Spain, and other European countries and the more popular sport there is Soccer.

I am going to clarify to the clueless soccer fans. Soccer is only popular in the year when there is a World Cup. For example, Year 2010 will be a soccer's year because of the World Cup. However, Year 2011, 2012, and 2013 will be dominated by football again because there won't be any World Cup. Don't use World Cup as an argument for the popularity of soccer, since it is only played every 4 years. Again, if soccer is that popular, MLS would be a lot more popular than it is.
