Andy Sonnanstine's strong pitching was no surprise. After carrying a shutout into the eighth inning, the right-hander has won his last five decisions for the Tampa Bay Rays. It was Sonnanstine's second-career two-hit game that the St. Louis Cardinals didn't see coming. The 2,400th victory of manager Tony La Russa's career will have to wait at least another day.
Jason Isringhausen and Ron Villone allowed a total of seven runs in the last two innings Thursday on a rain-soaked afternoon at Busch Stadium. Just as bad, starter Joel Pineiro let most of a 5-1 lead slip away in a three-run fifth that got the Pirates back in the game.
And so it is that La Russa is still at 2,399 and the Cardinals have lost seven of their last nine games.
Given the hot-button nature of the Isringhausen issue, the defrocked closer's latest meltdown in a four-run eighth drew most of the attention afterward. Isringhausen contributed to his own demise by walking the leadoff man, Doug Mientkiewicz. ...More |
