Manager John Russell hopes that a little rest might help the slumping Freddy Sanchez.

The second baseman was not in the starting lineup for the second consecutive game Friday as the Pirates lost 9-1 at Milwaukee. Sanchez is hitting .229 after going 0-for-6 on Tuesday night at Cincinnati.

"He's been working very hard on his swing, and it just got to the point where he was pressing a little bit," Russell said. "He can get some work done without worrying about results."

Sanchez admits frustration has gotten the better of him. He is just two years removed from winning the National League batting title with a .344 average and had a .310 lifetime batting average coming into this season.

However, he is also ready to write off this season as just a bad year.
...
