The Pirates have had a chance to see what the future might look like at shortstop this week, as Jack Wilson has missed three consecutive games with a bruised right index finger.
Wilson, who has the longest continuous service with the Pirates, having made his major league debut with them in 2001, is a top candidate to get traded in the offseason. The Pirates are looking to get younger and feel they can deal a proven standout defensive shortstop like Wilson and get a couple of top prospects in return. If Wilson is indeed traded, the top in-house candidates to replace him are infielders Brian Bixler and Luis Cruz, who were both called up from Class AAA Indianapolis on Tuesday after the International League season ended.
