The New York Yankees closer pitched himself in and out of trouble Saturday, escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth inning and preserving a 2-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The Angels' search for consistent offensive production has been no more obvious than at the No. 2 spot in their lineup.
Manager Mike Scioscia has tried seven different players in the spot. Through Thursday, their combined average of .236 and on-base percentage of .294 was the worst of any American League team and the 41 runs, they had scored ranked 13th in the 14-team league.
But Scioscia thinks he has at least a partial answer for the problem—first baseman Casey Kotchman. Scioscia plans to use the left-handed hitter as his No. 2 hitter against right-handed pitching.
