The New York Yankees appear to have found their center fielder for the 2009 season and it isn't Melky Cabrera. Two major league sources told the New York Daily News the Yankees are ready to ship Cabrera to the Milwaukee Brewers for Mike Cameron.
The Yankees have been saying that Cabrera and Brett Gardner would compete for the center field job, but the acquisition of Cameron gives them a veteran presence at the position.
Many believed Cabrera would be the center fielder of the future entering the 2008 campaign, but a disappointing season, in which he hit .249 with eight homeruns and 37 RBIs in 129 games, led many to believe he was destined for a future as a utility outfielder. Yankees blue-chip prospect Austin Jackson is not expected to be ready for big league action until at least 2010, making Cameron the ideal one-year stopgap in center field.
Cameron, a former Met, hit .243 with 25 HRs and 70 RBIs in 120 games last season. He will earn $10 million in 2009.

Eh? Whatever, i could care less if a guy takes roids, you still gotta hit the ball. That said I think Cameron is just as good, probably better than Melky as a fielder. Hitting wise he brings a lot of power, and I think he'll bat leadoff for us and be a Soriano type leadoff hitter (not saying he's as good as Soriano, but just that he's a homerun htter batting leadoff). Nice pickup, although I thought that Melky and Kennedy were gonna be traded together for a better player... I guess everyone knows that Kennedy is crap now.
If he hits close to 25 dingers as our leadoff guy tht would be incredible. Im not sure what the plan is with Damon tho, maybe they still are planning to keep him in left? Probably platoonin him and Mats as a DH left field.

Melky was not comfortable at the plate for sure. He was like a dear in headlights. Cameron is Sabathias buddy. This will make him more comfortable.

The Yankees are trading a young and prospering (despite having a bad last season) who is a phenomenal fielder for a bum who can't hit, is almost forty years old, and is a mediocre fielder compared to Melky.
I would rather have the Yankees trade Melky and Cano to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp and then the Yankees either acquire Orlando Hernandez or use someone in the farm system.

Melky had a down year but he is a switch hitter with much more upside than Cameron
