The New York Yankees appear to have found their center fielder for the 2009 season and it isn't Melky Cabrera. Two major league sources told the New York Daily News the Yankees are ready to ship Cabrera to the Milwaukee Brewers for Mike Cameron.

The Yankees have been saying that Cabrera and Brett Gardner would compete for the center field job, but the acquisition of Cameron gives them a veteran presence at the position.

Many believed Cabrera would be the center fielder of the future entering the 2008 campaign, but a disappointing season, in which he hit .249 with eight homeruns and 37 RBIs in 129 games, led many to believe he was destined for a future as a utility outfielder. Yankees blue-chip prospect Austin Jackson is not expected to be ready for big league action until at least 2010, making Cameron the ideal one-year stopgap in center field.

Cameron, a former Met, hit .243 with 25 HRs and 70 RBIs in 120 games last season. He will earn $10 million in 2009.

another Steriod head on the Yanks? Not saying there are any now but Giambi and Clemens are gona now we got this guy?
Eh? Whatever, i could care less if a guy takes roids, you still gotta hit the ball. That said I think Cameron is just as good, probably better than Melky as a fielder. Hitting wise he brings a lot of power, and I think he'll bat leadoff for us and be a Soriano type leadoff hitter (not saying he's as good as Soriano, but just that he's a homerun htter batting leadoff). Nice pickup, although I thought that Melky and Kennedy were gonna be traded together for a better player... I guess everyone knows that Kennedy is crap now.
If he hits close to 25 dingers as our leadoff guy tht would be incredible. Im not sure what the plan is with Damon tho, maybe they still are planning to keep him in left? Probably platoonin him and Mats as a DH left field.

Your trading a 22 year old that hits .25o for a 37 year old that hits .250....how is this a good trade!! Melky is better outfielder and yes he has less power, but he has something a 37 year old will never have,,,,potential!! Bad move unless Austin Jackson is the real deal, then I will shut up and say fine!

I have no hope on Melky. He will not improve any better. Every time when I saw him at bat, to me "Oh boy, he's going to pop up" That feeling does not feel good at all. Cameron at least got more power and speed.

WHAT!?!?! Cameron strikes out almost 200 times a season. Melky K's less that half of that. This will kill the teams OBP which seems to be an important stat for Yankee Brass. THIS WOULD BE A STUPID TRADE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!!!!!!

Dang. I thought we (Brewers) were set in the outfield for 2009. Now we've got a shaky unproven youngster coming in and we're losing another veteran presence (gone: Sheets, Torres, Cameron, Sabathia, Counsell...). Hey Doug Melvin: where's Tony Gwynn Jr. in this discussion, by the way? And would the Yankees please develop some talent of their own for a change? Don't they have a farm system somewhere?

    Evil,
Melky was not comfortable at the plate for sure. He was like a dear in headlights. Cameron is Sabathias buddy. This will make him more comfortable.

    What a terrible trade!
The Yankees are trading a young and prospering (despite having a bad last season) who is a phenomenal fielder for a bum who can't hit, is almost forty years old, and is a mediocre fielder compared to Melky.
I would rather have the Yankees trade Melky and Cano to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp and then the Yankees either acquire Orlando Hernandez or use someone in the farm system.

Yanks trade a young guy with big upside for an old guy with best days behind him, who says Steinbrenner's not running things anymore?

This sucks. I understand the win now mentality but trading a 24 year old for a 35 yr old who basically provides the same numbers does not make sense. Let Melky and Brett challenge for the job and concentrate on other areas.
Melky had a down year but he is a switch hitter with much more upside than Cameron

No this is a horrible deal for the yanks, I don't care about giving away Cabrera, but Cameron is not much of an improvement, and is a complete waste of money for what he brings (or lack of). I mean really, aside from SBs, Cabrera is the better player at this point, plus he's younger and cheaper. At this point I wouldn't want either as my starting CF, but at least Cabrera has the potential to do better. My only thought was this was a condition to bring CC in, considering they are good friends.

how can yankee fans even complain? your team throws money at every top name free agent that comes along. If they get what they want, look at the starting rotation you'll have... Sabathia, Burnett, Sheets, Wang, Lowe.... what is there to be angry at? Not to mention, your team has a history of signing/trading for "aged" players. Cameron's career will end as a Yankee like so many veteran players' careers have done.

Wow, I don't know why you guys talking about this is a bad trade. Look... Cameron can give you 20+ HRs and 20+ SB. I don't care if he's 40 years old, if he could gives you those kinds of stats, he reminds me of ricky hendrickson. He could play up to 45 years old as long as he got his speed.

Total upgrade for the Yankees on this one. On a depth chart; Melky is actually on the bottom of the rung for all starting centerfielders in major league baseball. Cameron is a total pro who is not only a better hitter than Cabrera, but a MUCH better outfielder too.

Mike Cameron is a phenomenal outfielder but he does not hit well...anyone who thinks that Melky is a better fielder is out of their mind. Coming from a diehard Brewers fan, Cam got to every ball last year and made it look effortless even at 37.
What happened to Ian Kennedy being in this deal?
