“JoeNew York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is apparently thinking of using a three-man pitching rotation during the American League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim that kicks off on Friday, according to the Journal News.

He mentioned this during a conference call with reporters yesterday and it would mean C.C. Sabathia(notes) would be carrying a heavy load. Sabathia would pitch Games 1, 4, and 7 (if necessary). He wouldn't get the rest he generally does before the Game 4 start but he would for the other two games.

He would be followed by A.J. Burnett(notes) and Andy Pettitte(notes). If Girardi does need a fourth starter because of bad weather or injury or any other reason, the general sentiment is that it will be Chad Gaudin(notes) and not Joba Chamberlain(notes).

    # man rotation ? Huh ... see what happens when CC doesn't perform in the post ! Petite?????? like the Angels haven't seen him before ? Wow .... I guess this will be the answer to the reason why Girardi's Bunch did NOT survive the Angels ! OK NY again so close & yet so far , GAAY-Rod also slumps in the playoffs ! Ha!

I normally don't bother to respond to people with one digit IQs.
hermanb, what's your point?? If the Angels have seen Pettitte (you can't even spell his name correctly) then the Yankees have seen Lackey, Kazmir, Saunders, Weaver, etc. So what, it proves nothing. Maybe for the play-offs, the Yankees should call up three or four pitchers from double A so that no one will have ever seen them before, thereby guaranteeing victory? Why is it that we do not see this happening? It never occured to you, did it?
Before posting your insignificant garbage, I suggest trying to jump-start some of your brain cells, as they appear to be all dead or dying.

Chad Gaudin will make a solid 4th starter. Chamberlain can be kept ready in the ballpen to put out any fires.
Sounds like Girardi is over-reacting to the Angels, just because they swept Boston. Take a deep breath and blow out slowly Girardi.

Girardi could use a twenty man rotation and its not gonna help. Angels are a strong team who will clip the Yankees this year.

Could work as long as he has a contingency plan set up to pull the plug on CC early in Game 4 if he is showing his usual short rest poor performance and if his bullpen isn't somehow over stretched in games 1-3.

First off.... we have already seen what happens to Sabathia on a short rest. remember last year with Milwaukee? The Phillies beat him up. So I am looking forward to the Yankees failing the same way. And Eddie L don't get too excited and wet about A-Roid. One series does not a great post season make. Just look at his track record. He stinks in the post season. Besides... it was the Twins for crying out loud......

It makes sense having CC pitch game 4 b/c this means he will be available for game 7 on normal rest if needed. Clearly if he pitches game 4 he wont go more than 100 pitches and wouldnt be surprised if they take him out in the 6th

    First of all "Tomko" Pleeeeease!!!!
I like the 3 man rotation, espacially the way the schedule is set, it allows us to load up the bullpen, CC will have to make 1 start with 3 days rest but we'll have plenty of arms in the pen if he starts showing any wear. Joe will just have to switch CC to game 2 of the WS, I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I don't see any team stopping the Yanks!! Too much talent, they're playing strong throughout the lineup and are really acting like a team for the first time in 10 years. Even Alex is tearing it up..
Sorry LAAAAAAAAA not happenin this year!
    GO YANKS!!!!

It's a calculated risk. If it works Girardi will be hailed as a genius, if it doesn't he will be second-guessed all winter.

@2.. you must be one of those pathetic Angel's fans that does not understand the game. Alex in a slump…have you seen his playoff #’s so far this year?? Times are changing and you need to recognize that just like the Red Sox have knocked out the Angels in the playoffs before and now it is the other way around… so will the Yankees knock out the Angels. The Yankees just took 3 out of 4 (including the one make up game in NY) and have showed what they can do. #’s show that the Yankees are a better team overall. How's the Angel's doing with catching? What do you have to say about your bullpen? Who is your lefty specialist? Talk is cheap. You must be one of the drunks that go to pick up on the girls (that are only good at caking on the make up) at the stadium, that one loser that yells and has no idea what you are yelling about. Get lost.

Girardi needs to take a chill pill. He needs to understand that he has a great line up that has gotten him out of trouble. He has made some bad choices during the season and is lucky that the team has been there to get him out of it. How about all those great come backs???? How exciting... I can't wait!!!

I am by no way a fan of the Yankees but I have to admit I like Girardi's thinking on this one. Why trot out a suspect fourth starter for game 4 when Sabathia is capable of giving them 6 good innings on short rest. Keeping Chamberlain in the bullpen helps them shorten the game and gives them a better chance of winning the series. Sabathia made several starts down the stretch last year with the Brewers and was outstanding.

Three things on this story. As the Angels have discovered in the past, if you change your approach in the post season you're likely to get rung up. The Yankees are changing their approach. Just run what you brung.
Also, isn't this an outright admission that the Yankee starting pitching is thin? If the Angels had come out and said Lackey was pitching games 1, 4, and 7 that's exactly what all you Yankee fans would be saying about the Angels.
CC and Lackey are both 5-7 vs their opponents in their careers. Yet the Yankees are going to run CC out there 3 times. History says he will lose 1, or more likely 2 against the Angels. But since will be on 3 days rest and has a has a record of not performing wel on short rest, losing all 3 is not unfathomable.

Artist, we'll play nice and not act to stupid. We'll do fine. At least no Yankee fans have asked me, " do you really think the Angels have a chance?" Not like one dumb azz Sox fan, who seems to have disappeared. My thought is, neither team made it here on accident, both teams have their strenghts, I see a knock down drag out. I have my ideas on what the Angels need to do to win, just like I'm sure you have your ideas on what the Yankees need to do to win. When it's all over, I know we both still like cats.
