Bobby Valentine hasn't managed in the big leagues since 2002 but he's been over in Japan leading the Chiba Lotte Marines since 2004 and now that he's returning to the U.S., some teams are certainly interested in bringing him onboard.
One of those teams is apparently the Cleveland Indians, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. The team supposedly has Valentine on its short list of candidates to take over for the fired Eric Wedge next season.
When Wedge got hired for the spot in 2003, it was a simple move up from the team's Triple-A franchise but that doesn't appear to be what the Indians will do this time. The team is apparently casting a wide net for candidates. Another person on the list is believed to be Travis Fryman, who once played third base for the Indians and manages the team's Single-A team, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
You gotta believe Valentine's chances are better than Fryman's.

Maybe if their manager didn't have a losing record in all but one April his GM wouldn't be forced to keep trading Cy Young pitchers! If Wedge had actually WON with Lee and CC (we lost 10 in a row with BOTH on the team in 2008), then neither would have been traded. Wedge (and the players) are to blame for the trades, not the GM, period.
As far as managers......word in Cleveland was that Fryman did not want to be a ML manager. He supposively didn't even want a promotion from Short-Season A-ball (where he's at now). Says he likes coaching the young kids and less stress at this point in his life. Wants to concentrate on family too, and being a ML manager would really cut into that. Even a coaching job (ie, base coach) at the ML level is reportedly out of the question for Fryman.
Valentine wouldn't be a bad choice. Team needs to fire to maybe wake them up in April. I was hoping Tony Pena would at least be on this list (could still be). Only manager in a long time to actually get KC to an above .500 record. Imagine what he could do with the young talent the Indians have? And what better manager to have when the Indians promote top prospect Carlos Santana? Santana's only real weakness right now is his game calling.....and Pena was one of the best at that.
