Sandberg not moving up to Cubs just yet

“RyneThe word on the street in Chicago is that Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg will be in the mix whenever Lou Piniella gets canned or decides to move on from managing. And there is an opening in the big club's coaching ranks for next season already since the team has apparently asked hitting coach Von Joshua to move down to Triple-A. So folks were speculating that Sandberg would come on up from his managerial spot with the Double-A Tennessee Smokies, a team that Sandberg led to the finals this season, his first with the team.

But the word within the Cubs organization is apparently that Sandberg will return to the helm of the Smokies next year, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Piniella could be done after next year, so the 50-year-old Sandberg may only need to prove himself for one more season before getting the big call.

The Cubs need a dose of Sandberg. They need to see how the game is supposed to be played day in and day out. His leadership and work ethic alone is worth bringing him to Chicago. I would also speculate that when/if Sandberg becomes a Major L:eague manager, he would not have a lot of room for prima donna players or those who refused to work hard every day or a ROY who shows up to camp fat and out of shape. I realize a manager can only play the players a GM gives him, but keeping non producing has beens and head cases in the lineup through August when prospects are sitting on the bench was a huge mistake by Pinella and he should be gone for that reason alone.

Sandberg is a good coach but to say he is going to do better than Pineilla is crazy. Experience is everything when coaching and three years in the minors (no matter who you are) is not that long. See ya in three RYNO

Sounds like the Cubs have second thoughts about Sandberg, especially after reading in Yahoo rumors about the incident 20 years ago, when Ryno blew up in the face of that poor kid wanting an autograph. That was unforgivable! I read where the kid is scarred for life, hates the Cubs and is a White Sox fan. The Cubs can't afford to lose anymore kids to the White Sox, expecially with their bloated payroll and having to figure out what to do with Meltdown Bradley.

Is this a non-rumor? They said the same thing yesterday, didn't they? Basically that he is "favored" to take over the club once Lou finally retires?

Where is the loser who constantly whines about how Sandberg treated his kid? He needs to get on here and drag the past out again, since it is so relevant to this article.

I'd like to see this kid, radio-active, now, around 26 years old, and Ryno make peace on the Jerry Springer show. I bet Jerry's goons would have there hands full, protecting Sandberg from getting what he deserves.
Maybe it will have a happy ending, with Sandberg getting the managing job with the Cubs, and the kid getting a couple of box seat tickets behind the Cubs dugout.

Sandberg is part of the Cubs' losing machine. He may have been their best player amongst some of the losing, but why would that help him as a manager?
Take the bad contracts they have, the new owner's lack of cash, Lou's lack of focus, the Reds are putting it together, and the Cardinals' perpetual dominance of the NL Central, and the losing is going to continue for a long, long, long, time Cubs fans.

Sandberg signs autographs but he doesn't like to. It does pertain to the article because it is his attitude and managing skills that are going to be under a microscope. RIGHT?

Its been fun and interesting! jeffstorm.
I thought Detroit was going to prove me wrong a few times last night! I thought the Twins momentum and home field advantage, along with the Cabrera 's fallout in the clubhouse, was going to bring the Tigers down.
Now we know where White Sox fans come from! My old E. Bercovich and Sons teammate, Von Joshua is being demoted to Cub's minor league batting instructor. Always admired Von as a person and ballplayer.

Sandberg in 2011 is going to happen. The one nice thing is that some of the kids playing for him now will be ready for the majors at the same time. Some of them, like Starlin Castro and Josh Vitters, will truly benefit from having a manager that was one of the greatest infielders of all time, and knew how to play the game right.

#15 - you better be kidding about Dusty. Like we need a guy who says, "Walks just clog up the bases" and that uses race whenever anyone criticizes him. I'm glad to see him in Cincy - anywhere but Chicago.

I think bringing in Sandberg with this roster is a mistake. Many changes need to be made. Ryno IMO hasn't really had enough experience yet, and is another year enough? If the Cubs flounder early in 2010 they will can Lou and go with the inexperienced Sandberg, a bad roster, and it will not work. The Cubs are trying to capture lightning in a bottle, it ain't gonna happen. Ryno makes sense only from a publicity standpoint. His career as a Manager will be over quickly if he takes over this team. He will be set up to fail. You know "the former player" thing does not always work. The SouthSiders got a WS out of that drunk little Venezuelan, but he put his time in as a Coach. Say goodbye to Bradley, Soriano, Fukodome, Zambrano, Harden for starters because all of them are China Dolls either physically, or mentally.......
