“RyneChicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg will be in the mix for Lou Piniella's managerial spot when he finally decides to get out of the game, Piniella told MLB.com.

Piniella only has one more year on his contract and he's saying Sandberg will certainly be considered when the team is figuring out his replacement whether he leaves the Cubs next year or signs another contract to stay on for longer.

According to the Associated Press, the Cubs have told hitting coach Von Joshua that he won't be back next season for the big club so speculation has already begun that Sandberg will be filling that role in order for him to get some exposure to coaching at the top level.

The 50-year-old who spent 15 years at second base for the Cubs seems to be doing all right where he is right now, though: He took the Cubs' Double-A team, the Tennessee Smokies, to the Southern League finals.

I say give him the hitting coach job or at any job in the Cubs dugout in Chicago. If he is going to take over as coach he needs to get a little experience dealing with being on the bench of the pro club. Granted he isn't guaranteed the job, but if he is going to be a serious consideration let's get him some time.

Hate to see Von Joshua get the axe. He was one of the best ballplayers and gentlemen I ever played ball with.

While I'm not denying the story described in post #6, I do have to say that I had vastly different encounters with Ryne Sandberg when I was a kid at Wrigley. He was extremely nice and often approached the fans waiting on the other side of the fence outside the players' parking lot after games. In fact, the only Cub player I can think of who stayed and signed more gloves and shook hands with more fans at that time was Andre Dawson (who seemed to spend TONS of time signing hats and gloves and baseballs for kids every game). Sorry you and your son had such a bad experience at Wrigley and I know it won't change your team allegiance, but I have to say that Sandberg wasn't always the way he was the day you and your son became Sox fans.

I've had postive experiences when dealing with Ryne Sandberg on mulitple occasions at the ball park. I am really sorry poster number 6 that you had a bad experience. I agree, get him some big level experience. I really think the Cubs need a manager who is going to push them. I thought Lou was that kind of a manger, but he seem to be more like Francona of the Redsox these days. Lou, we need the passionate Lou. Grad second base and throw it out into the outfield. I think this team would have played much better if he had more outbursts.
The nicest professional athlete I ever met has to be Walter Payton. He lived up to his name sweetness.

Thanks for the heart-wrenching story, Tillman. That is something "The Babe" would never have done. He loved kids and would do anything for them. Sandburg is cut from another mold. Does it have anything to do with being a good manager. I think it does. If you want to manage ball players, you have to earn their respect. Calling kids names doesn't earn respect.

Your never going to win as long as Carlos Z is your #1 starter, he is a number #3 at best, and how much are they paying somebody to win 13 or 14 games, you could get a good Triple A pitcher to do that. C'mon Cubs spend some money for great player, not just mediocre players. Just hope these new owners aren't like the people they bought the Indians, they only spend enough money to break even, because they don't have any, LOL You win with pitching and defense. to C Tillman, you wonder why pro athletes act that way? Because people always want something from them. If he gives your son a ball, then 500 fans are going to be pissed because they didn't get on too. When I lived in Cleveland, during the 90's I met Albert Belle, he was very nice, we chatted at a bar and talked football, my two brothers played college football. Maybe he was talking to me because i was a girl, but he was nice and polite. I never asked him for a ball or an autograph or anything, we must have talked for about an hour and he left to make it home. People are to demanding of these guys, just leave them alone. I have seats near the Cubs dugout and my cousin talks to Derek Lee before games all the time. She heckles him during games, but its all in good fun. She is a Deputy US Marshall, and he is very funny too.
