Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is apparently saying he "bought low on a player with considerable promise" when he snagged Jeremy Hermida(notes) from the Florida Marlins yesterday, according to MLB Trade Rumors. "He hasn't fulfilled his potential yet," Epstein said, according to MLB Trade Rumors. "We acquired him today to see if he can fulfill that potential." The Red Sox are apparently hoping the change in geography will help Hermida.
Red Sox fans have got to hope the 25-year-old outfielder can do better than hitting .259. He reportedly won't be expected to be an incredible defensive presence.
Contractually, Hermida has two years to show that Epstein's prediction was true.

That is a better team and allows the Red Sox to move around the DH and keep players rested. Lose Ortiz! O and I am a Yankee fan.

The SAwks are in flux and are going to have some problems competing with the Rays and Yanks for a few yrs. Too many position issues. A MArt for one is not an everyday catcher. You need one that plays defense. TEK is long done. Bay is not a lock to come back. Drew is so so with is injuries, Larouche is pedestrian, Lowell is good player but he is at the age where either they give him a new contract and pay him or trade him, Ortiz is done...no news there.

You are saying it as it is. The Red Sox have some issues. Hermida isn't going to solve anything!

if you think he is.,think again.
big papi has a huge 2nd half that helped me win my fantasy league.
just because jason bay had a big 1st half and ortiz had a bad one doesn't mean bay is a superstar and ortiz is done.
bay has a horrible 2nd half and ortiz had a career renaissance.

David Ortiz did improve in the second half of the season, but still batted .238. He knocked in 99 runs, but how many did he leave stranded? Boston gets a lot of runners on base. A good cleanup hitter should knock in 140 runs with that team. Ortiz had wrist issues, which he seems to have overcome. He must work out hard this winter and watch his diet, just like Howard did last year. He's aging, and the weight can pile on fast.

The Hermida trade was certainly an unexpected one, but I think a good one. It does point to Bay probably not coming back. I think the writing was on the wall for the Sox that someone, somewhere this offseason is going to grossly overbid for Bay, and he'll likely take that contract, as well he should. The Sox are deep in young OF talent in the minors. I see Hermida and Reddick, who's the most major league ready of the prospects, battling in spring training for the everyday LF spot, with the loser taking over the Baldelli role of 4th OF. Wouldn't be surprised to see Joey Gathright get involved in that mix too for 4th OF. His speed would be a big plus off the bench.
