MLB - Sports Rumors

“AlbertThe St. Louis Cardinals were reportedly going to try and get Albert Pujols(notes) to sign a contract extension this off-season but it appears that the team will need to wait at least another year, according to the Associated Press. "I'm not desperate to sign a contract extension," Pujols said. "I still have a one year contract in 2010 with a club option for 2011. The rest I leave in God's hands."

Club chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and general manager John Mozeliak are likely hoping that God would like Pujols to remain with the Cardinals till his career is over.

The 29-year-old probable National League MVP becomes a free agent in 2012 and it doesn't appear that Pujols will make the Cards twist in the wind for that long. He also mentioned to the AP that having a competitive team that has a chance for the postseason certainly will help him consider signing on the dotted line.

pujols has been vastly underpaid for years.
no more hometown discount, albert. it's time to make up for the money you got robbed.
the cardinals better come up with a record-setting offer like 35-40 million per season. if they don't, other teams would.

Albert Pujols is secure with his faith and skills. He doesn't need a contract extension. I wish all ballplayers were as professional and religious.

A little more production in NLDS and you'd be answering playoff questions right now.
How can someone be underpaid while honoring a contract negotiated and signed by both parties? Please don't let him think Scott Borass is GOD!

#3 where does it say anything about the damn Yankees? Its all about the Cardinals and Albert and his contract. Albert doesnt want to be a damn Yankee anyway just ask him. Dewitt will pay Albert what he wants. He will stay a Cardinal.

Pujols' next contract could make A-Rod's look like "chump change"....he's that much better. Cardinals better come to grips and suck it up now before they loose him to either the Mets, Dodgers, or Red Sox who will appreciate and pay his value. Good luck Albert, you deserve it!

As an Astros fan, I'd want Pujols to be out of the NL Central as quick as possible. However, since that isn't happening, the Cardinals better pony up. That man deserves to be paid. It would be devastating to learn if he were lumped in with the likes of Manny, A-Rod, Ortiz, Clemens.

#9 Dabull, Alberts contract will never make A Rods look like chump change. Not that he doesnt deserve a better one, being the best in BB. But there are not many clubs to throw that kind of money. You really think the Mets will open up the wallet for him, I don t se that. Boston owners are a little Frugal also. They do have other commitments. I think he will remain in St L. and get a decent contract, but don t look for it to dwarf A Rods. A rod s had a lot to do with being in the right place at the right time.

#11 stewie: no, i feel like teams will actually clear salary for this guy like teams are doing for lebron james in the nba. he's that good. he's one of the best all around hitter of all time if not the very best. he makes texeira looks like a scrub.
40 million a year is not out of the question.

@ Football God: "A little more production in NLDS and you'd be answering playoff questions right now". Pujols got a total of 10 at bats. Torre himself said he wasn't going to pitch to Albert. Pujols went 3-10 with just one rbi, but seriously I wouldn't say he underachieved as he had very few moments to make an impact in such a short series. It's no different that when teams were pitching around Bonds in his prime. One player can only do so much and then it falls back on the teammates.
As for Pujols leaving, it won't happen. The Cards will pony up. Pujols is St Louis especially since there's very little excitement outside of the Cards with the exception of maybe the Blues (the Rams certainly aren't page turners!).

stewie #11: When you get a chance let me know how I settle up my lost side of our bet.
On Albert, my initial reaction was why would he negotiate an extension now when salaries are likely to escalate by the time he's a FA, especially considering some type of economic recovery? But one good reason for Pujols to negotiate an extension now is if he's on steroids or other PEDs. Lock up the long-term money now before his use catches up with him one way or the other. In retrospect, it certainly looks like that's what A-Rod did in 2007. I've had Pujols high on my list of suspected "juicers" for some time, but this information seems to contradict that view.

Joseph T, are there facts surrounding your charge? NO! You do not need roids when you have god given talent. As far as being paid, he most def. deserves it and the Cardinals will pony up. He will remain a Cardinal for several more years.
