Padres close to hiring Hoyer as GM

“JedThe San Diego Padres didn't want Kevin Towers to be the general manager anymore so they canned him three weeks ago. And now it's looking like the team is close to bringing on 35-year-old Boston Red Sox assistant GM Jed Hoyer to take his place, according to ESPN. (Rumor has it that Towers could take Hoyer's place in Boston.)

Hoyer, who has been employed by the Red Sox since 2002 when he was 28, has been interviewed by the Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates in years past for GM jobs but it looks like he's going to get the gig this time around.

The former star pitcher for Wesleyan University (who reportedly still has the school's saves records) has never lived away from New England.

i, still, don't know what's going on. Boston replacing Hoyer with Towers, and trying to work out a trade for Gonzalez. Selig better check out what's going on here.

If a sweethart deal for Adrian is done here, then this new GM should be fired on the spot for incompetence!

actually I would think a deal would be quite likely as Hoyer knows the sox farm well so he knows what is worth taking.

    Hassan,
That is very true, but right now the Red Sox bluechip prospects are all at the lower levels at least 2 years away from major league ready. I am not sure the Padre fans would be receptive to a deal that would send away their top player for some guys who aren't ready to play in 2010 for San Diego.

AG isn't going anywhere. Talk is talk, Red Sox and Padres do all year every year. The Sox don't and will not give away what the Padres want, period.

What's wrong with the Pads. They interviewed the Dodger Assist. GM and she has long been ready for this position. They pass her up for a young hasn't done anything yet guy. If this is happening to get a one player trade then that is just bad for the fans and for the integrity of the club.

Who in their right mind would hire a GM just to facilitate a trade of their best player? This is a NOTHING topic....there is no conspiracy going on here. If Moorad hires the Boston guy, it wil be because he's Moorad's type of guy and will have nothing to do with trading AG. He'll want a guy to lead and build the organization to improve value and become more profitable, nothing else. If Towers goes to Boston, good luck to him.

Theo Epstein was once the Padres PR guy and then Director of Baseball Operations before he became the GM of the Red Sox at 28. It makes perfect since for the Padres to grab this young guy for their GM spot.
