Mets will send reliever Putz packing

“JJThe New York Mets are apparently telling reliever J.J. Putz(notes) to take a hike this off-season.

The New York Post is reporting that the team won't be picking up his $9.1 million option for next season. Why should it after he pitched only 29 1/3 innings and gave up 18 runs in the process. Not exactly what you want from a reliever, particularly one who was the centerpiece to a three-team deal that involved the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians. We went through all that trouble for this?

Putz has a $1 million buyout clause. Mets GM Omar Minaya is sure to take it. And watch Putz take some kind of incentive-laden deal somewhere else.

I was anxious to see what he could possibly offer the Mets this year in performance, but definitely not at that cost. Oh well, best of luck and be thankful you won't have to endure the 2010 Mets season.

I don't see what wrong with pick up hi for less money, it not like K Rod was that great either. I bet Omar would have pick up his option if he was a Latino player! If the decision was base of his injury the half the team should go.

I'll hold the door. Perhaps JJ and Redding can share a cab to the airport?
Did a guy named Putz really have a shot in NYC?

Omar, Jerry and entire coaching staff must go. Trade Reyes and Beltran for dependable players who will actually play and not spend half of every season the DL train. Oh yeah both will be healthy for spring training and both will go down again before mid season as usual. Enough already of paying these guys to ride the DL train. Neither of them have played an entire season without going on DL, I believe. Do not sign Del Gado either. The money we paid these 3 guys to ride the DL, we could of signed Mark Texiera and a couple of other players and still been ahead of the game. This Latino Los Mets BS Omar is pulling has to stop. It should be renamed, Omar's Los Crapolas Mets.

the guy had bone spurs and torn cartilage in his throwing arm. i say rehaul the entire medical staff, HSS being the mets' hospital or not. you could own a porsche, but if you don't know how to use a clutch it will sit in your driveway! this guy was hurting all season until he finally went DL august 25th. the irony is, as much as he WAS hurt, he will now be hurting US if he plays in the NL because he will be healthy and better than ever. also, A's hooter, he's fine as krod's setup guy WHEN HEALTHY. ps. speaking of injuries, does anyone believe JIMMY ROLLINS would be out almost an entire season with a lame hamstring? cough cough jose reyes cough cough.

Just wait- he will end up pitching well for a deep discount once he is healthy - just like Pedro. I think Minaya is the worst poker player in history.

Ok, I'm a diehard Mets fan too, but RonB_Sr, you have no idea what you're talking about.
When you write Carlos Delgado's last name as Del Gado, you can figure that out.
Beltran and Jose Reyes NEVER go on the DL. This is the first time they've been on the DL for an extended period of time with the Mets. You might be frustrated because of the injuries and I can understand that, but you can't blame them if they've been playing every single game for the past 3 years. As far as Delgado goes, I think he still has a little left in the tank. If I could keep him on the cheap, I would. He was doing really well before he went down with the injury. You don't ship away your entire core because they were injured for a season. That makes no sense. Also, before the injuries, Omar looked like he assembled a pretty darn good team. If they had stayed healthy, they probably would have done enough to make the playoffs, in my opinion. So you can't blame him either. This was a fluke year, I say keep just about everybody (including putz) and try again next year, hoping everyone's healthy.

Thanks Gary. This dismissive article totally neglects to say he was injured. I think he will probably come back strong somewhere else, but for 9 mil it's definitely a crapshoot; you can never quite predict how someone comes back from surgery. Ditto John Maine, though that's a better and cheaper risk to take. But let's see about Reyes; I don't see even Rollins running too far with a torn muscle. Totally agree about the "med" staff; they gotta go back to pre-med, and away from the Mets (and take Omar with them...)

well said, jets fan, and im onboard with delgado, too. he was on an MVP tear before he hurt his wrist! i just cant agree with you on omar and his camp. bernazard FINALLY got exposed this season along with the other binghamton clowns, manuel was "okay" considering he was coaching a AA team all season, but even back when we were healthy, jerry's boy razor shines at 3rd cost us at least 10+ games. ryan church misses 3rd base and the 3RD BASE COACH doesn't even catch it? i could go on with other blunders but ask luis castillo who blew through every sign shines gave him if he thinks he knew what he was doing?! sounds like im making a big deal about a 3rd base coach? if his "coaching" cost us 11 games and we ended up 12 games out, it would be MAJOR news. im shocked the mets are still paying him a salary. is his new position similar to isiah thomas' with the knicks because dolan had to keep him because of those "goat pictures". :-)

    Hey RonB_Sr...
You have to stop copying & pasting your notes...they are getting really boring.
On a more positive note...2 guys who's opinions I really respect, Al Leiter & Barry Larkin were pretty positive last night in terms of the Mets. Leiter said last night on the MLB Channel that he thought David Wright was the player to watch in 2010. After getting that first year in CitiField under his belt and being surrounded by healthy and better players this year, his stats should get back to where they normally are.
Larkin said that, especially now that the Yankees were champions, he see's the Mets doing whatever needs to be done to put a winner on the field, so he chose the Mets as the team to watch in 2010.
The NY Post reported today that the Yankees were not going after any high priced free agents, so that's good for the Mets also.

    Casual observer?
Ron B is probably more like an 86 Mets fan who's stuck in a time warp wondering why the Mets can't be champs again like 1n 1986 with only one quiet little Latino on the team like Raffy Santana.
I don't care when people say they should trade Reyes or Beltran, but I hate when they invent the numbers to justify it!

I don't see a problem with a fan focusing on the glory years(I have been a Met fan since the very 1st game in '62) but to make statments that are without merit, tells me he isn't wathching too often.I guess frusrtration and impatience can cause you to manufacture your own reality.

Jetfan4life; For the most part I agree with what you said. However, and to be fair and accurate; Jose Reyes did in fact spend a lot of time on the DL in either '03 or '04 with a hammy problem. I think he also had some minor lower back problems.
That aside; both Beltran and Reyes when healthy and in the line-up make the Mets a better team. I don't think people realize just how serious Beltran's injury was. As for Reyes; I think the medical staff just screwed the pooch on that from the beginning. And one more thing on Reyes. With some maturity, I think he can still get better. Personally, I don't think he's reached his full potential yet.
As for Beltran; If he's healthy, he's one of the best all-around CFers in the game (forgetting about what he's paid). And if you don't believe me; ask ANYONE in baseball.

Send him packing? You never should have grabbed him when ya did to begin with. You need to send the whole FVCKING team packing and that includes that over rated GM Omar as wel. That piece of SHlT did nothing in the past 3 years but mack the Mets look like SHlT. Mets need to re-evaluate the whole FVCKING team and go from there. And yes that means getting rid of Carlos Beltrai and Castillo for starters.
