“MattWhen Matt Holliday(notes) enters the free-agent market this off-season, there will be many teams that desire his services, but the New York Mets are expected to come after him harder than anybody else, according to Sports Illustrated.

The San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves are expected to make runs at Holliday as well, but no team has more of a PR job to do with its fans this off-season than the Mets, who started the years as supposed contenders and ended the season with a bunch of injured veterans and a second-to-last finish in the National League East. Holliday, who spent the season with the Oakland Athletics and Cardinals, supposedly wants to stay in the National League.

Sports Illustrated also reports that the Mets aren't likely to throw their dough at pitcher Roy Halladay(notes) and will instead to try and find a nice, steady mound presence that isn't going to break the bank.

A nice steady mound presence that won't break the bank???? You mean another overpriced ineffective latino like Oliver Perez???? Top priority should be another top of the rotation starter. Perez belongs in minors. Maine and Pelfrey are # 4 starters. Philadelphia already has Cliff Lee. I can't continue to support this team as long as Omar is GM. He is completely ineffective at talent evaluation.

If it was me making the decisions I would have fired Omar and then go after pitching. This lets get bats first mentality is the reason they are in the spot they are in.

When will the NY Mets get it right. There need for pitching is not as crucial as there need for a pure HITTER. I don't understand how a Met fan would pay a premium price for seats to see a second class team.

Pitching is what helps you win. Without good pitching you can score all the runs you want and still lose. You would think that the Mets would know that after the last three years! Fire Omar and Randolph!

It's funny. Aweek ago Yahoo said the Mets were going to spend like crazy. Now they say there not. I dont care who you sign. If you dont move home plate up 10 to 15 feet nobody and I mean nobody is going to sign.

The Mets need a player like Holliday. Delgado is leaving, Beltran is injury-prone, and Wright is coming off an awful year. They NEED some offense in that lineup, otherwise they can have the best staff in the league and still fail to win games. Solid pitching puts you in a position to win, but you need OFFENSE to get a victory in the end.
No one can argue that Santana is an ace. Pelfrey, Maine, and Perez are all serviceable 3,4, and 5 starters. The Mets need to fill that #2 spot (which I think they can do without overspending). Holliday provides the Mets with a solid bat in the lineup that will help protect David Wright. Having Francoeur and a hopefully more filled out Murphy will also help.

    Good morning, davfied
C.C. pitched lights out last night with just 3 days rest. Another Bob Gibson? If the Yanks take one of the next two, Sabathia will be well rested for the W.S.
Alex Rodriquez is having fun, again. I think Reggie Jackson inspiried Alex and has him in a new mindset. Rodriquez seems to be more focused and worrying less.

Hey # 15. The Mets don't have the best staff in the league. The Giants do. But the giants should be an example of what happens when you have no hitting but, the best staff. No playoffs. The Mets actually have some hitting, but their staff is not as good as you think it is. Santana is great, but that's all they have!

I just see that dropped fly ball play over and over in my head. The last thing we need is more defensive shenanigans at CitiField in 2010.
The Mets should have gotten Jermaine Dye 3 years ago when he was available for a song, or Nick Swisher last year. But, then again, Omar Minaya is an idiot.
And for all those not much brighter than Minaya who feel the incessant need to make some tired Latino joke, know that, in the end, you're the real joke. Grow the F up.

    Sign him at any cost.
There are very few teams that have good pitching staffs
The Phils are living proof that you don't need killer pitching to win.
Before Lee, they did not even have an ace.
All you need is a bunch of starters with low 4.00 ERA's and 6 or 7 big bats and you will win.
    Sign some hitters!!!
