Mets could be bringing in fired GMs

“Omar
The New York Mets apparently need all the help they can get. General manager Omar Minaya has apparently made contact with a few general managers who were recently canned in hopes of eventually bringing them in to help out, according to the New York Post.

The San Diego Padres axed Kevin Towers as GM and the Toronto Blue Jays did the same to J.P. Ricciardi. So Minaya, who supposedly has one more season behind the desk in New York to prove he can build a winning team before  team owner Fred Wilpon gets rid of him, gave them each a call to offer some support, according to the paper.

The long-term goal of those calls, though, is supposedly so he can have them help him out. The rumor is that the team would like to hire them in the off-season to be part of the brain trust.

Couldn't hurt.

So bringing in 2 brainless people as part of a bigger brain trust is their answer? This sounds like a future joke to tell at the bar... How many dummies does it take to ruin a team?

Amazing, instead of doing what is appropriate, and firing Omar, they need to bring in people to help him out. Mets will always find a backwards way of doing things.

We Phillie fans miss the mets. Towers is the man for the job. His drafts could have been better but that has to do with the Padres not wanting to give big bonuses. There was something missing this year we miss the mets. Two great american city with a freindly rivalry whith the greatest game in the world

One good thing about the Mets you can count on, they always seem to make the Yankee's look good even when the Yankee's are doing bad.

Ricciardi might be an adequate intern, more than that and he's a detriment to any team.

Does anyone on here know an iota about Kevin Towers? I guess not because you would be praising the move by the Mets to bring the guy into the fold. Towers was fired not due to poor performance, he simply is not Jeff Moorad's guy, plain and simple. There is an article about it on yahoo sports. I pray that he is hired by the Mets to be the assistant GM, i.e. to replace Omar after next season. The guy has pulled the wool on teams left and right in trades. He basically stole Adrian Gonzalez from the Rangers. Granted the Giles deal for Perez and Bay was foolish but I think our boys in Queens traded that same Jason Bay away as well... Think before you post or, just try some cranial activity at all.

Sounds like Omar wants to bring in some help for two reasons:
    1) Some more "brains" to share the blame with.
2} Some inferior "brains" to make him not look so bad!

@ Joesph S - Thanks and likewise to you and your phitins. I'm not the biggest fan of them, but I respect how they play the game with reckless abandon. I hope that the Metropolitans can give you guys a run for the money next year.

Towers was characterized as a "gunslinger" and J.P.'s best finish in Toronto was 3rd - even with a payroll in excess of 100 million. Does any of this sound familiar? Omar is the worst of both - a gunslinger that finishes 4th with a payroll over 150 million.

JP actually finished 2nd one year, he's still the worst GM in Blue Jays history though.

CJ - In a 14 yr span he should have some good deals and bad deals. No one here is saying he didnt do some good things. I just think this whole scenario is a joke. Hire 2 ex-GMs to save 1 horrible GM. Thats what it is basically happening here. So if the Mets go far next year does Omar get the credit for Towers/Ricciardi making moves.

Fair enough. To be honest, I think we Stalin to come through with one of his famous purges, gut the entire upper management. I'm being sarcastic of course, but the Wilpons are looking to be as big of a joke as Omar is. They publicly support the guy and then trash him on the back page. I'm not saying Omar doesn't deserve some, ahem the lion's share of the criticism. I just find it hard to believe that he has wrecked the franchise all by himself. If their intent is to fire Omar after next year and bring KT in as his replacement then they should save themselves and the team the trouble and just go ahead and fire the guy. They've already shown they will fire guys under contract why wait on Omar? If they are going to bring in two co-assistant GMs, then they should just hire 10 ex-GMs, would that increase the odds of making a good move, good Lord!

Another bone-head move by the Mets.If this is their idea of doing their due diligence than we should all turn in our blue and orange.Ricciardi has nearly as bad a record as Omar.Towers doesn't seem nearly as bad but why rush to sign him with the season only ending yesterday. It is this kind of inattention to detail that has gotten the Mets into the mess they are in.Spend some time evaluating the situation and the available talent before jumping head first into an empty pool, idiots.

This will only work if these two guys can get some of those Padre & Blue Jay players on the Mets. Gonzalez for 1 at 1st base, and maybe Halliday or Aaron Hill. But unless they are helping pilfer from those teams, whats the point, too many chiefs, not enough indians.

Yes let's bring in a new GM and fire Omar's @** along with Jerry and entire coaching staff. We need to trade Reyes, Beltran and few others and not resign Delgado. Enough is enough with paying these guys huge salaries to ride the DL train every freaking season. There not playing anyway so their not doing us any good. Get some dependable players that will actually play and hopefully help this team win....
