MLB - Sports Rumors

“JasonThe Boston Red Sox would love to bring back free agent outfielder Jason Bay(notes) and the rumor is that the team would be willing to pay him $15 million annually for the next four years, according to Sports Illustrated.

After all, the guy had a career year and hit 36 homers and drove in 116 runs this year. Plus, the 31-year-old Canadian became an American this year over the July 4th weekend.

The San Francisco Giants and New York Mets are expected to get into the bidding for Bay and either could take it higher than $15 million but one thing the Red Sox have going for it is that Bay was raised by a major fan of the team. Bay apparently wore a Red Sox onesie as a baby and had posters of Jim Rice and Carl Yastrzemski hanging up as a kid.

Posters of Sox players doesn't mean he will go for less money...it is actually pretty pointless to add to this blurb.

I guessed 4-5 yrs 15 mil to 17mil per. I expect the final signing to be 5 yr 82.5 mil deal or something close to it...

taste it yankee fans who try to make the sox look like the pay-top-dollar ho's that the yankees are. look at all the top players taking home town discounts lester, youk, pedroia, lowell (just after he got the batting title), and others... not alot of home town discounts on the yankmees

the sox should have made this offer early in the season when bay might have taken it. he'll probably get more years somewhere else... and if the yankees are seriously interested? hasta luego

The Sox entire offseason really depends on whether he comes back or not. If he does resign, I really don't see them doing anything else major, except some bullpen and bench tweaking. If he doesn't come back, that would mean they would probably be out of the Holliday bidding as well, and could very well make a trade to upgrade in LF. They also could go the route of a Jermaine Dye for a 1-2 year, incentive laden deal, give some of the young OF's like Reddick, Kalish, and Westmoreland extra time to develop and hope they can be an option in the near future. I even read that Lars Anderrsen might get some time in the OF in Pawtucket next season. 4 years, $60 million does seem like a reasonable offer, and I really don't see the Sox going much higher in terms of guaranteed $$ or years, so it's 50/50 on whether he comes back I think, but the fact he wore a Red Sox onesie as a baby should push it in favor of him staying in Boston.

Bravo Shot - Lowell I'll give you..but saying Youk, pedroia, and Lester is not accurate since all the Sox did was buy out some arb years and a few FA years off of them. We can say the same thing with Wang, Cano, Melky, Joba, and Hughes if you say that counts.

The Rice and Yaz posters won't be a factor in whatever Bay decides to do. If he resigns with Boston it will be because he is comfortable there and the Red Sox offer is competitive with others that he may get.

Except Wang, Cano, Melky, Joba, and Hughes couldn't have waited it out to get more money cuz they suck dog turds.
Youk, Pedroia, and Lester could have. MVP/Cy Young caliber home grown players can do that.
    Nuff said.

    Morning Gents,You too Crux*****
A especially great morning to my fellow Yankee fan & friend in the 'EVIL EMPIRE" of greed, deception, and smoke & mirrors, Artist. Some game by Burnett last night. Did I happen to mention that he would pitch a great game? Pedro pitched well also. Surprised me. He didn't have any heat though. He was living on the change. This post season has had the worst umpiring I can remember ever seeing. They have to adapt instant replay. Bay is good but faded badly at seasons end. I don't think he is worth that much but if he can get it more power to him.

    Good Morning! Rob
Pedro looked sharp last night. Too bad the Phils couldn't get anything going against AJ. Manual kept him in a little too long. Guess he has lost faith in his bullpen. A Rod looks like he is struggling big time! The Phils have his number!

    Hooter,
Pedro surprised me. He knows how to pitch. His physical skills have declined but his knowledge hasn't. AJ came up big. Look for ARod to get un-tracked Saturday. It seemed unfair whe Mariano came in. He is robotic. 95% of the hits they get off him are dinkers the hhave sawed the hitter off or off the end of the bat. He is the closet thing to super human I have ever seen play. The Mick of course is in there. Even when hungover. Got to run some errands. Be back.

    Str A's,
My personal observation about Arod is that he is much more relaxed when there is less pressure for him to come through. The Yankees dominated their series against the Twins and were in control of the Angel series as well. Alex was awesome in those games. So far the World Series has beem very competitive.

It may be an old topic, but I can't help but wonder what the Sox would have looked like if Pedro had stayed. It opens up a LOT of "what if's". Would he have stayed healthy with a different staff trainer?
What will the Sox outfield look like next year? Will Drew be around (the only liability that I can see out there)?
