MLB - Sports Rumors

“DonFormer New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly really, really wants to be a manager in the big leagues, but he apparently doesn't want to do it for the Washington Nationals. Rumor has it that Mattingly turned down an offer to interview with the team and help turn it around, according to MLB.com.

There is apparently some belief that this indicates that Mattingly and his current employer, the Los Angeles Dodgers, are formalizing some kind of plan for hitting coach Mattingly to take over for Joe Torre when Torre finally decides to call it quits.

Meanwhile, the Nats apparently want to name a new manager within the week. Interim manager Jim Riggleman is a possibility as well as former Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin.

Whatever happens, the coaches have all been promised jobs within the organization for next year.

When Mattingly signed on with the Dodgers in 2008, I too thought he'd eventually become the LA skipper. But with his son turning in a third consecutive disappointing season of A-ball, I don't think the Dodgers' brass is all too high on Preston as a prospect anymore. It could be a sore point for Donnie if Preston gets cut or traded as a player-to-be-named later in the next year. I know Donnie's a professional, but the sentimental attachment to the Dodgers wouldn't be there. Just my thoughts.

Donnie ball belongs in New York but there is no doubt in my mind that he'd take over for Torre if he's offered the job. He was very hurt when he was passed over for the job in New York and it's going to take some serious ass kissing to get him back.

Word of advice Mattingly....go to AAA first and actually get some managerial experience. It's help you out.
I do think Mattingly knows his stuff.....but what has he ever done to show he can manage a club?
He's never been a manager at any level (unless he managed his kid's little league team and I'm unaware). He's always had Joe Torre running things.
I'd be VERY hesitant to give him a ML managerial job right now......and I'm sure this played into the Yankees thinking when they did not hire him.

Tony...u hit it right on the button! he belongs to the Dodgers now and no matter how much the Yank Me fans whine and cry that he belongs here....it isn't gonna happen. Right now, i thnk there is no amount of ass kissing that could bring him back. Look at Mike Scioscia. Pretty much the same happened to him except Mike was stuck in the minors for awhile, which leads to MATT #10 and how Don could use some Minor league manager experience. yeah it hurts to see Mike Scioscia in that ugly red uniform in Orange County of L.A. lol. BUt just give it some time.....he most likely will end up back there in the future. But right now.....he is bleeding DODGER BLUE! LMAO...that outta get some of u riled up.

Tony, sorry, Mattingly was not offended at all and has said so many, many times. He went with Torre, it was the right move for him at the time and he knew it. Panch, the only color Donnie is bleeding is green. Money talks, he's making more now then he did as a player.

Of course that what he said publicly. He's a first class guy now and always was but deep down you know it killed him when he was passed over for Joe G. Bottom line is that if he is offered the Dodgers job he'll take it. Most likely Torre is done in another year or two at the most. The Yankees won't be looking for another manager for quite a while and Mattingly will be managing in L.A. for a long, long time if he has any success at all.

If I were the Dodgers, I'd be afraid to hire Mattingly if he's learning from Joe Torre. I think Torre has done less with more the last nine years than any manager in baseball history. At least with the Yankees, he could hang his hat on the Championships in the late 90s and 2000. But even the Yankees realized over time that his contributions were over-stated and over-valued. It's the same thing in LA. That Dodgers' fans haven't yet picked up on this is really surprising.
As a Phillies' fan, I'm always happy to see Joe Torre over in the other dugout. Mattingly might be his own man, as Larry Bowa (also a Torre coach) is, and if I'm the Dodgers, I certainly want to confirm that before handing him the managerial job in 2011.

Donnie shouldn't be turning down interviews, It's a recession! He has no executive experience, Girardi got the job because he did so much with one of the smallest payrolls in the league when he was with Florida, and if you think he doesn't have anything to do with the attitude and winning adjustment this year, you are a dummy.
He made that team gel from day 1.
    Good job Joe,
    Good luck Donnie

Brian D: Great post and right on. I think the job Girardi has done managing the Yankees this whole season has been fabulous. The Yankees added three enormous contracts over the season, and at least two (Burnett and Teixeira) enormous egos to a team already full of divergent personalities and massive egos. Then they started the year with all the A-Rod steroid mess. That might have torn a lot of teams apart. Girardi navigated that disaster and molded a team with the skill of a seasoned veteran manager.
I think this year's Yankee team has played with more heart, spirit, joy, and played more as a team than any recent Yankee team in memory. That's a testament to Joe Girardi's managerial skill.
I also think the Nationals are much closer to being competitive than almost everyone thinks. And going after Mattingly, to me, demonstrates yet another commitment to win on the part of team ownership.
I just think Mattingly has been told that he'll be the manager of the Dodgers in 2011 after Torre retires, and he's not going anywhere for anything.

JD...oh for sure money is key here. but no matter what Don says and its all the right things. you know he felt slighted when they didn't consider him for the Yankee job. cmon man.....you or i work for a company for 20 years or more and you see management bring in someone who was with the company for a 3 years like Girardi was or with the Yankees or some college punk grad...you would be pissed and probably look for another job. this is no different. and in this case Don has too much class to bad mouth his former team. he moved on and it's best that he did. but instead of being happy for the man....the tasteless and classless YankMe fans(wont mention names cuz we all know who they are in here. starts with a D)......all they can say is he belongs here, he is a yankee, blah blah blah.....fugg that! Don can go wherever he wants. and he did!

I could see it now.....Fantasy Island episode starring Davcried. remember how the guests came off the plane when they got to the island and how Mr. Rourke would tell Tattoo ( "the plane, the plane!") what each guest is there for? here goes my version of Davcried stepping off the plane all dressed in Yankee gear, panties included:
TATTOO: "Boss who is that guy dressed up like a Jankee little leaguer?"
MR. ROURKE: "Oh, that there is Mr. Davcried, he is here to fullfill all his dreams as a child. He never got to play on any of the teams he joined. always being the last kid picked in the playground. his self esteem is very low presently and he is very sick in the head and his liver is giving out on him."
TATTOO: " gee Boss...that is horrible. what are we gonna do for him?"
MR. ROURKE: " well Tattoo...I have arranged for all his childhood playmates who teased him all his life to come to Fantasy Island and have a weekend of baseball games, reminiscing about old times. I even had our crew construct a mini replica of Jankee Stadium on the East end of the island. His old friends have been paid to pick him first, let him play any position he wants and let him win."
TATTOO: "gee boss....i didn't know a grown man needed such pats on the ass to feel good. I dont get it Boss?"
MR. ROURKE: " well Tattoo. thats why he is here. to pat his ass and make him feel good."
TATTOO: "ohhhhhhh i get it Boss. can i dress up in a Jankee uniform and be the batboy for his team?"
MR. ROURKE: "lol...maybe Tattoo, but that is part of his fantasy. to be batboy of the Jankees and I have arranged for the 1977 Jankee team to come play a game so he can fullfill his fantasy."
TATTOO: "gee Boss....you are great. i sure hope he leaves here happy."
MR. ROURKE: "oh yeah Tattoo....i have also constructed a Hooter's right next to the stadium for after game parties where all his friends can join him. Hooters is his fav palce to be at of all time. and you will be the manager my friend!"
TATTOO: "oh gee Boss! thanks!" (Tattoo gets a chubby!)
    (mister rourke clears his throat)
MR. ROURKE : "my dear guests... I am your host Mr Rourke.....welcome to Fantasy Island!"
Dav then cums on himself and proceeds to live out his fantasy.
    THE END!
TOP THAT YOU FUGGIN PUTO MAMON!

Are you delusional Donnie? Stop listening to empty promises of fictional succession plans that all start with "you will follow Joe Torre as our manager". How many times are you going to let Lucy pull the football away Charlie Brown Mattingly? Take a managers job in the BIGS anywhere. Then next time around in the never ending carousel of the old boys club of recycled managers you can pick and choose your location.

Don Mattingly is only trying to gain experience. He understand that he can't just be given a big time managing job when he had been out of baseball for years.
Look what happened to neophytes running NY teams:Willie Randolph, Eric Mangini and now Rex Ryan.
