Dodgers say Penny is done for the season

Brad Penny became ineligible for postseason play Wednesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers put him on the 60-day disabled list so they could create a spot on the 40-man roster and activate Rafael Furcal.

The move might've marked the end of Penny's tenure with the Dodgers, who can buy out the $9.25-million option on his contract for next season for $2 million.

Penny, who was 6-9 with a 6.27 earned-run average in a season plagued by shoulder problems, said this month that he pitched hurt and worsened his condition because of the Dodgers' refusal to extend his contract.

Of how General Manager Ned Colletti hasn't told him that his 2009 option would be exercised, Penny said, "It just tells me they were never sold on me, which is fine."

Furcal, who was taken off the 60-day disabled list, mentioned Wednesday that he, too, could be looking for a new employer next season. He will be a free agent this winter. He said he would play winter ball in the Dominican Republic in part because "I have to find a job."

Maybe if he didn't pitch hurt he wouldn't have aggravated his injury and the Dodgers would have given him the extension

Even in his best years he was a first half picher for the Dodgers. I would not resign this guy I think he is washed up.

Overpaid, overrated. Mediocre in his prime at best. Blames everyone else for his failure. The Mets will probably sign him next year.

Pennys got a rep as being a pretty insufferable teammate, sort of an NL Sidney Ponson. I dont know where a guy like that fits in. If the Dodgers dont resign him, maybe KC can get him fairly cheap. They signed Jose Guillen, and hes not the easiest guy to live with. Maybe they'd take a chance on Penny-put their lockers next to each other LOL.

Penny is good every other start, has only two pitches ( a hanging curveball and a typically 92-93mph belt high fastball), and recurring attitude problems. Ditch him and Kent they're both clubhouse cancers. We like to have fun here in LA and like to know our Dodgers do too. With Sweeney, Manny and the rest of the blue crew it's a light atmosphere and a fun place to play and watch a game. You know who would fit in our fun loving clubhouse? CC!
