It's looking like the Arizona Diamondbacks will pick up starting pitcher Brandon Webb's(notes) $8.5 million option, according to Sports Illustrated. A final decision doesn't have to come till five days after the World Series but it appears that the team is leaning in that direction.
There was some talk about Arizona trying to renegotiate a longer deal but Webb apparently wanted nothing to do with that so the team just went with the option year and will hope to convince him to stay longer another time.
Former National League Cy Young award winner Webb was out for the season with shoulder surgery, appearing in only one game. But he's viewed as a key to next year's rotation. The team is hoping he can return to 2008 form when he won 22 games.

I believe Eric Byrnes is under contract for another year or so. Its the Diamonbacks fault that they brought him back from hamstring pulls too soon. Now he hasa surgically repaired tear. Eric will play his heart out for any team that will trade for him. But Eric likes Arizona and wants to stay. Especially if Webb is brought back.

Keep that in mind kids. Even WITH BW, AJ Hinch is still managing this team. CY is still the CF, and there still isn't a major league 2B or 1B on the roster. You're counting on Montero to repeat (?!) and Reynolds to hit 44 again, and those are tall orders. With or without Webb, AZ will be lucky to win 76-77 games.
