MLB - Sports Rumors

“BrandonIt's looking like the Arizona Diamondbacks will pick up starting pitcher Brandon Webb's(notes) $8.5 million option, according to Sports Illustrated. A final decision doesn't have to come till five days after the World Series but it appears that the team is leaning in that direction.

There was some talk about Arizona trying to renegotiate a longer deal but Webb apparently wanted nothing to do with that so the team just went with the option year and will hope to convince him to stay longer another time.

Former National League Cy Young award winner Webb was out for the season with shoulder surgery, appearing in only one game. But he's viewed as a key to next year's rotation. The team is hoping he can return to 2008 form when he won 22 games.

Now they just need to get rid of byrnes. Young can be a backup outfielder. Get rid of byrnes and use his money to sign a starter or maybe try to trade Byrnes to the padres in a deal involving Adrian Gonzalez.

    rfffr #4,
I believe Eric Byrnes is under contract for another year or so. Its the Diamonbacks fault that they brought him back from hamstring pulls too soon. Now he hasa surgically repaired tear. Eric will play his heart out for any team that will trade for him. But Eric likes Arizona and wants to stay. Especially if Webb is brought back.

The only way the D'Backs can "get rid of Byrnes" is to trade his contract - $11Mil? - No one is going to trade for for a guy who has been injured for the past two years at that salary level, unless the D'Backs "eat" some of that money or trade for another player with big contract & problems, like Milton Bradley. That would be an interesting deal, but would the Diamondbacks to it??? No way!!!

So, Webb does not want t a longer deal with a team that paid his full salary in 2009 when he only pitched 6 innings all season and took a chance on him for 2010? Let him show that he is well again and then trade his greedy butt to a crappy team for some good prospects.

For those of you 'penciling him in' for 22Ws again, be THRILLED if he can come back healthy and effective enough to go 15-10. AZ finished 25 wins behind LA, 22 behind Colorado and 18 behind SF. Webb's return - and if he can stay fortunate enough to go 15-10 (remember - he won't get much run support either), it won't make up much of the difference.
Keep that in mind kids. Even WITH BW, AJ Hinch is still managing this team. CY is still the CF, and there still isn't a major league 2B or 1B on the roster. You're counting on Montero to repeat (?!) and Reynolds to hit 44 again, and those are tall orders. With or without Webb, AZ will be lucky to win 76-77 games.
