Damon may be done with Yankees

“JohnnyThe New York Yankees were apparently hoping that Johnny Damon(notes) would be basking so much in the glow of being a World Series champion that he would forget about any long-term deal and sign a one- or two-year deal. But his agent is Scott Boras and Boras doesn't forget about such things.

Rumor has it that Boras is comparing Damon to Derek Jeter(notes), according to the New York Post, and wants his client to get a three- or four-year deal for more than the $13 million per year he just made with the team for the last four years.

The Yankees are apparently not ready to shell out that kind of dough for Damon so he may be headed out of the South Bronx for good pretty soon.

Johnny Damon had a great year and Series with the Yanks. He deserves a good one year contract over $10 million dollars, or multiyear with a low buyout and incentives. He wants to stay with the team that has embraced him for his all-out inspiring play!
Johnny should dump Boras. Boras is unreasonable at times.

boras is killing another great marriage. damon's scrappy play is terribly important to the yankees offense but his arm is a liability and since he did not win a gold glove this year, he is obviously no jeter. i would pray for boras to die and leave baseball to the people who love it, but his clients just need put a muzzle on him or dump him entirely.

i DON'T EXPECT HIM BACK. Someone will top the yanks "veteran" deals that they offer for aging players. I could see him sign with the white sox, twins, A's even Angels. They might offer 10-12 million with incentives but Boras will make it difficult. That's when they make a play for Bay.

This is just Boras being Boras, no one is going to give Damon 4 years/52 million. The Yankees have Austin Jackson waiting, probably only a year away, there's not much incentive for them to resign Damon to a multi-year deal. Holliday, on the other hand, is a real possibility if the Yanks do decide to open their wallets. A 3-4-5 of Holliday, Tex and Arod. Outstanding.

He played well for the Yankees but they should let him go. I wonder if they will offer him arbitration in order to get draft picks back. If they do would he accept?

    Johnny,
Stick around big man! Unless you can't feed the kids on $10,000,000 + a year. You need us and we need you. And hey for that kind of cash, try pumping some iron with your throwing arm in the off-season. Nothing wrong with the legs or the bat. As much as I like you, I LOVE the team more. Either you're with us or against us. See you at Steinbrenner Field this spring.

David B, A three-four-five of Holliday, Tex and A Rod would be sick! Except when its crunch time during the World Series. I wouldn't mind having Damon around in those situations.

also - hes been more and more injury prone. not long term injuries, but the nagging injuries that mean too much rest. lets not forget that he finished the world series limping around the bases. love damon and what he did for the 2009 yankees, but he is NOT worth more than a one year deal.

    @ David B...
Y would the Yankees get Holliday than put him in the 3 hole and move Tex and A-Rod down a spot in the order? I would think theyll put Matt in the 5 hole.

Royals fan here. Damon's always been about the money, not that I can blame him though. But it is what it is with him; he's never shown loyality unless the coin follows.

When Damon leaves the Yankees he can grow his hair & beard back. Matsui was the Series MVP, Not Jeter, Not A-Roid. Damon was the 2nd most valuable. Why don't the Yankees unload Jeter & A-Roid? If not for Matsui's game 6, Chase Utley would have been the MVP on a losing team.
The Yankees gave up on O'Niell & then Bernie Williams & Scott Brosius. The Yankees went 6 years without winning the WS after that. If they don't bring back Damon & Matsui, they will NOT win another WS depending on Jeter & A-Roid, plus AARP members Petit, Posada & Rivera.
How many WS HR did Jeter have? How many times did Jeter even hit the ball as deep as the OF was playing him? Answers Zero & One. Francisco could have caught Jeter's lazy fly ball.

Forget damon if Scott Borasss want 3 - 4 years worth if 13 mils avg. I would rather spend 20 millions a year for Matt Holliday. Matsui and damon both combine worth of 25 millions, cutt those off, and save 5 mils a year by signing Matt Holliday. Do it Cashman.

    Hey Jay,
They would want Tex in the middle of two righties just for the pitching nightmares it would give other teams. We could go...
    1. Jeter
    2. Holiday
    3. Texeria
    4. A-Rod
    5. Matsui
    6. Posada
    7. Cano
    8/9. Cabrera/Gardner
    8/9. Swisher
Holy Smoly that looks scary doesn;t it!

    Morning All,
Bye Johnny. He has been a good & loyal Yankee. Almost like he was a Yankee all his career. I do believe he will get a 1+1 offer. I hope he stays. Loyality is something that comes hard.

Johnny is a good guy to have on your team. A productive hitter, may have lost a step in the outfield but still not a real liability other than his arm. What the Yankees are about to find out is that there will be no hometown discounts. His services go to the highest bidder.

    Isles fan,
That was a very funny comment. Johnny was a much bigger fan favorite in Boston, in New York he was more or less just one of the guys. He was part of the Red Sox breakthrough to the World Championship in 2004 and a big part of the comeback from an 0-3 defecit against the Yankees in the ALCS. I don't think he ever reached that status with the New York fans. Just look at some of the posts from Yankee fans on this blog. Many will not be sad to see him go.
