Damon done in New York?

“JohnnyNew York Yankees slugger Johnny Damon's(notes) contract is up whenever the Bronx Bombers finish up this year and there are reasons to believe this will be his last month in pinstripes, according to the New York Daily News.

Damon was an offensive force during the regular season, hitting 24 homers and 36 doubles but he disappeared in the divisions series, where he hit .083. His hope is that the four days off between the close of that series and the opening of this one will help him find the ball again. If he doesn't, it may mean he doesn't return to the Bronx.

If he comes up big the rest of the way a 1 yr deal with an option will get offered but there are other options out there.

i thought that this guy was done... i was wrong. Sign a one or two year deal with the Yanks or a contender and help them win a title.

Wasn't Damon declared done by the Red Sox also? He's still got something left in the tank.

Johnney Damon is a big reason the Yanks are in the Playoffs. While Alex was recovering from hip surgery, Johnney was knocking in runs and helping the Yanks stay close to the Red Sox. Hope the Yanks have enough sense to bring him back for a year or so.

Will be interesting to see how much he gets next year......Abreu only got $5M or so.....
If his price falls enough, he'd be a good fit in Chicago with the White Sox. They need a leadoff hitter badly. Could use him in LF, Quentin in RF (though they'd lose some D), and Rios in CF.
They don't have much money to spend though....but if they move Jenks, that could open up some payroll.

Its a sorry state of affairs when a player is judged by his last few outings, when he had a really good year. Whos to say that Johnny won t come up big in this series. There is such a thing as a slump. Don t count him out just yet. Let the rest of the season play out . There are many options that can be explored.

Looks like the Yanks are gonna go after Holliday, Bay will also be available. The Sux will probably blow there load on Mauer, and trying to resign Bay, so may be out of the bidding for Holliday. Don't know what the Yanks plan on doing with Xman but I think the Yanks will sign at least 2 outfielders and maybe a pitcher maybe leaving Jonny D out in the cold. Might very well depend on what he does in the playoffs. Hopefully he'll tear it up and the Yanks will feel compelled to keep him for one more year.

Damon will still be a decent hitter for the next couple seasons (for someone other than the Yanks) but his days in the OF are done...he's terrible out there now. Can't judge fly balls, can't see, legs are wearing down and his arm has always sucked...

#8 - yankstorm - Not sure what the Red Sox "blowing their load" to sign Mauer has to do with Holliday. Considering Mauer is not a free agent this season. You seem to be very smart though, so I guess you know something the rest of the world doesn't. Bay is good, but not worth overpaying for. I read on ESPN that they may extend the same competitive offer to Bay and Holliday, the first one to fax back a signature gets the dough. Although, who knows the validity of that.
Aside from those two, Boston will allegedly be targeting Rich Harden AND Ben Sheets this offseason. Despite injuries, both have a ton of talent so I doubt they'll be incentive-based deals. Boston will probably just be rolling the dice with them.

For real he's even fielding the ball like a girl now! I cringe whenever the ball is hit to left field, not that Swish is any better on the other side. Posada will be the DH after next year and may very well Dh alot next year if they bring up Montero on time so there may not be a spot for Jonny.

#13 Mark There's no way the Twins will be able to match the offers that are likely to be made to Mauer, probably in the Tex area. The only way for them to get anything for him is to trade him before he becomes a FA, unless they franchise him, but he's extremely marketable right now and the Twinks can fill alot of holes with the young prospects and cash they would get. Might be too hard to resist especially with Bostons glaring hole behind the plate.

Johnny Damon was a great addition to the Yankees. I think that they should keep him for another year. He's had a great season. But the way that the Yankees are they probably will give the boot. After all look what they did to Bernie Williams who was a Yankees Great at one time. They'll get rid of Damon but keep losers like Chamberlain and Burnett, who are a couple of disappointments. They got rid of Abreu last season who played great for the Yanks and still is doing great with the Angels. They should drop Melky who is so inconsistent and do some shifting to keep Damon.

I'd like to see Johnny come back to his roots in Kansas, and finish his career with the Royals, if the Yankees don't have the decency to offer him another contract for his fine year.

#16, 17 You guys are talking about loyalty instead of ability. HE CANNOT PLAY THE FIELD!!!
And his legs and arm are only going to get worse!! You can't keep a player because you like him, he has to fit in the design of the team. We can't carry 3 DH's it's ridiculous..We need outfielders who can hit, run and throw!!
AJ will be ready soon, and there's alot of good FAs coming available.
    Matsui and Damon are gone!
    GO YANKS!!!!

Morning from the right coast Gents. You too Mark.........
    Hooter,
I would love to see Damon come back only I have a couple questions. Why did he stop running? Why did he slump now? This is the most important time.
    Stewie,
Damon or Matsui. We can't handle 2 DH's. Shame to get old.

Sam - Chamberlain is only 24 yrs old. He is not a disappointment. He's been playing since he was 21 yrs old for us in the bullpen and this was his first season as a starter with limited innings. I think he is pretty impressive so far and his future is bright. Next season you will see the handcuffs come off and I think he will be just fine when he is not limited in his pitch counts and innings.

Alot will depend on whether or not the Yankees decide to go after Bay or Holliday. If they do, that would pretty much end Damon's tenure in pinstripes.

#18 - yankstorm - I agree he isn't the cream of the crop defensively. There's no arguing that. His arm is terrible and once earl fetches us some sabermetrics on his arm strength it may prove to be the weakest in baseball. However arm strength isn't AS crucial in left as it is in center and right. Guys don't go from first-to-third nearly as often in balls hit to left as they do when balls are hit to center or right. Really his arm only matters when trying to gun down a runner at the plate, and that may only make a difference of 4 or 5 runs for the entire season, so it's not huge. I don't think his legs are much of a problem. I could be wrong, but he stole 12 bases and didn't get caught at all so his legs appear to have some gas left in the tank.
