MLB - Sports Rumors

“BobBob Brenly spent his season broadcasting Chicago Cubs games and now he's doing color commentary for the Los Angeles Dodgers-St. Louis Cardinals series. But the first person in 40 years to manage a team to a World Series win in his first season as manager (Arizona Diamondbacks, 2001) might be the guy getting interviewed by broadcasters next year rather than doing the interviewing. He apparently has had conversations with a team about returning to managing, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The most likely place to have asked after him this off-season is Washington. During the season, Washington Nationals GM Mike Rizzo apparently had very informal conversations with Brenly about the possibility of managing the Nats when his team was out at Wrigley Field for a series. Of course there are spots open in Houston and Cleveland as well but the Astros weren't expected to make phone calls to candidates till today.

In the past few years, Brenly has been talked about for a few managerial jobs, including the Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers. "I always enjoy talking to baseball people, and if I get an opportunity to go for interviews, sure (I will)," Brenly told the paper.

He really wanted the Cubs job, and now he knows Ryno will be the first in line for it when Lou retires so he's jumping ship. Pays a LOT more than sitting in the booth, but I have to say, I love his boldness and calling it like it is... he does not "sugar coat" nothing. If he sees a player not running out a grounder, he's all over them... that is what we need on the North side.

Not a big fan of him in Cleveland. Seems like he cares more about his imagine and how the media views him than managing. Stick to the booth.

Bob would be a good manager anywhere. Give him good players and he will win. He did this in Arizona and when they didn't repeat the next year... gonzo. Who said Louie is retiring? He had a good team that didn't perform. Part of the problem was Bradley and Zambrano. The other stigma is the 101 year hex. Boston finally overcame it and maybe some time the Cubs will.

Bob does a great job doing color for the Cub games! He is in a very enviable position. He has a job he loves and has the opportunity to return to another baseball job that he loves. It is win win for Bob. If he does leave, he will be missed. Good luck Bob!

Ryne Sandburg has an issue he must resolve first before being considered for a managing job in the Big Leagues. It appears that he really messed up some kid while playing aboult 20 years ago. This little kid asked Ryno for an autographed baseball, and Sandburg yelled into the kids face "No!". The kid cryed and never recovered from the trama. Bob Brenley would be a better choice for managing the Cubs when Pinella retires.

He's getting hired to get fired. Nice guy but when it comes to leading a non-talented pack, good luck. Might as well bring Art Howe out of Grandpa's mothballs.

Brenly would be a good manager for any team. He knows baseball and he knows how it is supposed to be played. He hates lazy players and he very straight forward. I sure would miss him broadcasting my Cubs games though.

I have the belief that a really good manager doesn't really win but a couple more games than a mediocre manager, however a bad manager can lose a lot more games. GMs make a lot more difference in their offseason pickups (ex. Trever Miller) and trade deadline pickups (ex. Holliday) and how they utilize players from the minors (ex. 2008 David Price).
Brenly has proven that he isn't a terrible manager, therefore I wouldn't hesitate to hire him.

Hi speaking of managers and former big league players that are doing color commentary, Before the d'backs hired Bob Melvin to be the manager, they first tried to give the job to Wally Backman and wound up with pie in the face and also there is a guy that's been a color commentator for the d'backs by the name of Mark Grace. I wonder how he would do as a manager or even a hitting coach and I wonder if the d'backs would swallow their pride and give the job back to Bob Brenly.

If I owned the Cubs, Steve Stone would be my GM, Brenly the manager, and Greg Maddux the pitching coach. Mark Grace would replace Bob in the booth, and then it's on to the World Series...maybe. But with or without the World Series, the Cubs would be a much more enjoyable team to watch.

If he takes a job shoot the owners if they decide to move Ron Santo to the TV side. That guy might be the worst broadcaster in MLB.

Torre managed the Mets and Braves before he managed the Yankees. The article is saying that Brenly did it in his first year as a manager.

#3 Matt is right about Brenly being all about image and self-promotion. I met the guy when I was in middle school and he was catching for the Giants. Every year he'd sponsor a "Bob Brenly Day" at Candlestick where kids from local schools would go to a game. They herderd us into a room at the Stick and some unimportant front office guys made speeches about what a wonderful man Brenly was. Then Bob rolled in to give a terse speech about staying in school and started to jet out of there. I happened to be by the exit he was headed for, and was armed with a ball and sharpie. The dude completely denied my request for an autograph, then went on to go 0 for 4 as the Giants lost. Will Clark and Matt Williams were three times the players that Brenly was, and they had the courtesy to give me the time of day when I met them as a kid.
Oh - and as an added feather in my cap - I happened to be in attendance the day Brenly played 3rd base and set a major league record with three errors in the same inning. Unfortunately, he redeemed himself with a walkoff hit in the same game. He's still a dikc.
    Go Dodgers!
