“JoshBoston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett(notes) would like to stay in New England for a while, it appears. He's apparently planning to meet with the team in the next few weeks to discuss a contract extension, according to WEEI.

He'll make $12.1 million next year but is free to roam the streets of any city he wants after next season if a new deal can't be worked out.

It looks like Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is plenty aware of the big bucks it will take to retain Beckett: "He's put himself in a position to be valued very highly by us," he said to WEEI, but he wasn't predicting a definite deal: "Those things have a way of taking care of themselves. ... We'll see what happens."

Next year is an even year, so you get the marginal Josh Beckett. Seriously - look over his career stats. A Cy Young contender in odd years, and a solid back of the rotation guy in even years. Coincidence, of course, but weird.

Artist, great point about Lackey and what he gets. 2010 could be a real make or break year for the Sox, with Beckett, Martinez, Ortiz, and Lowell all in the last years of deals. Something could be said for not giving any of them extensions and letting they play for the $$ this coming season, keep the extra motivation there. Plus, the big offseason question they have this offseason about how many years and how much $$ are they willing to offer Bay. They do have options in the minors with good OF talent, so maybe going the Jermaine Dye, 1-2 year deal route could be a better, cheaper option, and let those young OF's get the extra work in the minors.

I hope we can extend him. As good as Lester is, we need a 2 aces, and Beckett is that other ace.

Daniel V- I think your wrong if your implying that Martinez shouldn't be signed or any reason pretaining too. I would also think about Beckett though I'm not sure at this point the Sox have a true ace(not even Lester). I wouldn't mind seeing Lackey or Halliday in a Sox uniform. Not sure Jermaine Dye is the answer if the Sox can't sign Bay. Regarding Ortiz and Lowell- I think this will be the last year for both. The Sox have some holes to fill and a couple of them are in the starting pitching. I don't think the Sox are as strong tin starting pitching as they thought they were and the pitchers called up from the minors were not that impressive when they were called up at the end of the season.

Mike J, I never said they shouldn't resign Martinez or Beckett, or even Ortiz and Lowell for that matter. All I said was let them play out this season and make the decisions on who stays and who goes after 2010. You would agree a player playing in a contract year is more likely to have a bigger season with the extra motivation of a big payday at season's end? All 4 of those players should have good years anyways, but dangle the carrot of $$ in front of their faces all season, it should get that little extra out of them.

Daniel V -I'm saying sign Martinez now. He can play both first and catch(will have a full training camp), and can hit from both sides of the plate. I would wait on Beckett (he may have lost a little confidence)like you suggested. Ortiz has seen better years and I think he would have to take a hometown discount even with a monster year next year(which I would be suprised if that happened). Lowell took the hometown discount his last contract, not sure if he'll ever totally be healthy and think that he's gone after next year. Warmer weather and the fact that he resides in Florida( I believe) mite make him more attractive to a team down South and may help him overcome the hip problem.

Even the good Red Sox fans are invited they know who they are. Everyone can come except azzholes and haters and that know it all PPW. Pancho and Jacks can come if you vouch for them scott. I will make sure there are females there. I will invite my students at Hooters, they need some time off for good behavior. My lady friend will also invite her friends from her job at Big Lots. All my friends are invited so just send me the bill for your airline tickets but try to make them cheap. Go Yanks.

Dav has more than a substance abuse problem. It's called depression, bi-polar, loneliness, schitzophrania or any unstable mental condition.. He came out across to me this morning in a way that surprised me. OK, actually, not surprised he would talk to any person like that, but to me, i was surprised cuz i never had any beef with the old bat. But he crossed a line with me today and he will not hear the end of it. I use to feel bad for him, knowing he is way outta touch with reality and he has no friends outside of these rumors. BUt i no longer do. I don't talk to people like that on here. I bust balls about sports related stuff, thats it. Dav gets personal and shame on him for doing it to me. I have always been cool with him. No more. He gets whatever he has coming to him and whoever else gives it to him. Dav....you claim to be this "good catholic man.".........I am a Catholic myself and attend church as much as i can with my son and let me tell you.....i know of no "good catholic man" who talks to people the way you do. Dav, pinche puto mamon. mame me la verga cabron. eres un hombre enojado y no tiene ganas o corazon. chinga tu madre y los pinche YankMes tambien. maricon!

I think Varitek,Ortiz and Lowell are in there last year with the team. Varitek's Option might not even get picked up. Who's to say we should go after a Lackey or a trade for a Webb or Hudson. Also, If we deal lowell and ortiz to get a SP, who's to say the sox don't go after Holiday and Bay? You know the Yankees will go after one of them. I truly think Varitek, Lowell and Ortiz need to go this year so we can get some Pitching and shore up some of our hitting.

The Red Sox should make every attempt to get a deal done with Beckett. As it stands now, the Sox face some serious problems in 2010. Ortiz, Lowell and probably Varitek will have this last year on their respective contracts to try and win one last time. In addition the Sox will owe Julio Lugo his last $9 million in what has to be one of the worst signings in the history of Boston. What that all means is that the Sox are somewhat hamstrung from making major changes for next season. It will not be easy to achieve their normal "wildcard" status next year. Making the effort to sign Josh Beckett before he reaches free agency is a no brainer.

Mike J, I understand your point on Martinez. Out of the 4, he would be the one I would sign first. Beckett and Ortiz seem like the 2 that the contract year would have the most influence on. Beckett wants to prove he still is a legit ace and Ortiz wants to prove he can still be a legit homerun hitting cleanup hitter. Ortiz would be more willing to take less $$ to stay than Beckett, but we shall see. Lowell, personally, I think will retire after the next year. Call it a hunch, I just don't think he has anything left to prove and seems to know his best years are behind him. For that reason, as long as they treat him like a veteran catcher, only letting him start around 120 games or so next season, he should be fine and put up nice numbers hitting 7th or 8th.
Rene, I wasn't saying Dye was a long term answer, but when you figure it will take a 4-5 year, $15-$16 per season type of deal to get Bay back, versus a 1-2 year, incentive heavy deal to bring in Dye, while young guys like Reddick, Kalish, and Westmoreland get more seasoning in the minors, it could very well be a viable option.

Daniel V #7: Well articulated point. And not that I disagree, but if these guys do rise to the occasion and have really good seasons in their "walk years," they are likely to be even more expensive afterwords. The upside to signing any of these guys now (early to late spring after the FA signing period) is that each of them should be cheaper in this current baseball economy.
I just get the feeling that the dramatic increase in expected non-tender offers to arbitration eligible players, combined with the economy, is going to drive FA prices this off-season even lower than last year when guys like Bobby Abreu and Orlando Hudson were signed very late and for relative bargains. I see that same thing happening again, to an even larger extent. One advantage of the Red Sox holding off on signing any of their four big names (Ortiz, Martinez, Beckett, Lowell) is that they maintain the financial flexibility that could allow a team with their budget the ability to really take advantage of a down market.
