Five players since Babe Ruth to hit three home runs in a postseason game
The Texas Rangers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in Game 4 of the ALDS to take the series. The big star in the game was Adrian Beltre(notes). Beltre hit three home runs for the Rangers in their clinching win. Over the years, it has been rare for a player to hit three home runs in a postseason game. Babe Ruth did it twice in the 1920s. Since then, only five players have done it including Beltre. Here are the five players to hit three home runs in one postseason game since 1930.
Bob Robertson - October 3, 1971
During Game 2 of the 1971 NLCS, Bob Robertson of the Pittsburgh Pirates went yard three times against the San Francisco Giants as the Pirates won the game 9-4. Robertson's three home runs came off of three different pitchers. His performance helped set the tone for the series as the Pirates would draw even with this win and take the next two games to advance.
Reggie Jackson - October 18, 1977
There is a reason that Reggie Jackson is nicknamed Mr. October. In a Game 6 that saw the New York Yankees clinch the World Series title against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Jackson went yard three times. Jackson's two run shot in the fourth inning gave the Yankees the lead. He added two more to help preserve the win.
George Brett - October 6, 1978
Surprisingly, Brett's three home run day came in a losing effort. Brett hit three home runs off of the legendary Catfish Hunter in Game 3 of the ALCS. Unfortunately, all three were solo shots. The Yankees would defeat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 in the game and go on to win the series.
Kennedy hit his three home runs in Game 6 of the 2002 ALCS. Kennedy's efforts helped the Anaheim Angels win the series clincher against the Minnesota Twins. Kennedy's first two home runs were solo shots. His third home run came with two men on base and was part of a 10 run seventh inning as the Angels rolled to the win.
Adrian Beltre - October 4, 2011
Beltre's three home run effort came in the series clincher for the Rangers. All three of his home runs were solo shots. Teammate Ian Kinsler(notes) also hit a solo home run meaning that all four Ranger runs came on the long ball. Beltre was the first player to hit three home runs in one ALDS or NLDS game.
