Mariners coach John Wetteland hospitalized
Seattle Mariners bullpen coach and former World Series hero John Wetteland was hospitalized Thursday for what officials called mental health issues.
According to the Denton County sheriff’s office, a woman from Wetteland’s Texas house called to report a possibly suicidal person around 12:30 p.m. CT.
"She said he was complaining of being depressed and contemplating suicide," Sgt. Roger Griggs said.
Mariners officials said they looking into the situation and had not issued a comment.
Wetteland was hired as bullpen coach in December 2008 and helped the Mariners to the lowest bullpen ERA in the American League. He retired in 2000 after a 12-year professional career. He was named the 1996 World Series MVP while serving as the closer for the New York Yankees.
