Rays Team Report

INSIDE PITCH

Reid Brignac(notes) expects 2010 to be different.

The past two seasons, he knew he was around the big-league team to lend a hand and/or to learn. But he’ll come to spring training in February determined to show he belongs.

“Legitimately, I’ve got an opportunity to make the team this year,” Brignac said. “I knew in the past I was gaining experience and being around the guys. Now, hopefully, I’m going in competing for a job.”

Brignac is considered one of the game’s better shortstop prospects. But with Jason Bartlett(notes) entrenched as the starter—at least until he becomes too expensive—and elite prospect Tim Beckham in the minors, Brignac is making himself more versatile by becoming comfortable at second base.

That could turn out to be a wise move, because the Rays may have a bit of an opening at second, depending on whether they decide to keep Ben Zobrist(notes) there, have him split the position with Sean Rodriguez(notes), or put him in right field and open up competition to Brignac and Rodriguez.

Brignac is working hard at it, playing winter ball for Mazatlan in Mexico to hone his skills.

NOTES, QUOTES

—of F  ernando Perez’s path to the big leagues with the Rays appears blocked. Given the presence of returnees B.J. Upton(notes), Carl Crawford(notes), Gabe Kapler(notes) and, at least in a platoon, Ben Zobrist, plus the expected matriculation of Matt Joyce(notes) and the pending arrival of prospect Desmond Jennings, Perez’s name is starting to surface in trade rumors. Most recently came published speculation that he could be of interest to the Cubs, who are seeking a speedy center fielder.

• Rays special adviser Fred McGriff is on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time, but it is considered a longshot that he will be elected this year. McGriff played parts of five seasons with his hometown Rays, and he hit 99 of his 491 homers for them.

• Roberto Alomar’s career ended in a Rays uniform, when he retired in the middle of spring training in 2005 following an abysmal performance. He is expected to be elected to the Hall of Fame when the voting results are released Jan. 6.

• DH Pat Burrell(notes) seemed likely to stay with the Rays after the long-discussed deal to swap him for Milton Bradley(notes) was not consummated and the Cubs instead shipped Bradley to Seattle. But with free agents Jason Bay(notes) and Matt Holliday(notes) seeking top dollar, Burrell’s name has surfaced in reports linking him to teams such as the Cardinals and Braves that may need another bat at a lower price.

By The Numbers:   3—Major league pitchers other than the Rays’ James Shields(notes) who pitched 215 or more innings each of the past three seasons. They are CC Sabathia(notes), Roy Halladay(notes) and Dan Haren(notes).

Quote To Note:   “He could play either one. He’s a big-league shortstop and a big-league second baseman.”—Class AAA manager Charlie Montoyo, on infield prospect Reid Brignac.

ROSTER REPORT

The Rays don’t think they have to make a lot of changes to improve their team; they’ll focus on catcher and the bullpen. With the expected additions of OF Matt Joyce and INF Sean Rodriguez from Class AAA, the Rays think they could be set in the field, and they are happy with their rotation. Newly acquired RHP Rafael Soriano(notes) figures to take over as the lcoser.

Biggest Needs:   The Rays’ biggest priority will be to improve the quality and depth of their catching situation, given the decline of Dioner Navarro(notes). They will at least talk to teams about moving disappointing DH Pat Burrell, as much for salary relief as the chance to use more productive hitters they already have.

Arrivals:   RHP Rafael Soriano (trade with Braves), RHP Ramon Ramirez(notes) (claimed off waivers from Reds), C Kelly Shoppach(notes) (trade with Indians).

Departures:   RHP Jesse Chavez(notes) (traded to Braves after being acquired from Pirates), C Gregg Zaun(notes) (free agent, signed with Brewers), 2B Akinori Iwamura(notes) (traded to Pirates), C Michel Hernandez(notes) (free agent, signed minor league deal with Orioles).

Free Agents:   RHP Chad Bradford(notes), RHP Jason Isringhausen(notes), RHP Troy Percival(notes), RHP Russ Springer(notes), LHP Brian Shouse(notes), OF Gabe Gross(notes) (non-tendered), C Shawn Riggans(notes) (non-tendered).

The Rays allowed the relievers to become free agents as they seek to remake their bullpen.

Arbitration-eligible:   SS Jason Bartlett, RHP Matt Garza(notes), LHP J.P. Howell(notes), C Kelly Shoppach, CF B.J. Upton.

Bartlett, in his second year of arbitration, and first-timers Upton and Garza are in line for significant raises.

In Limbo:   DH Pat Burrell’s season was such a disappointment, the Rays might look to trade him, even if they have to eat some of the money—his salary jumps to $9 million next season. RHP Andy Sonnanstine’s(notes) season-long struggles have reduced him to a candidate for a long-relief job in the bullpen.

Medical Watch:

C Dioner Navarro (left elbow surgery in October 2009) is expected to be ready for spring training.

OF Fernando Perez(notes) (left shoulder surgery in October 2009) is expected to be ready for spring training.

1B Carlos Pena(notes) (broken left index and middle fingers) was said to be recovering well and should be 100 percent by the end of November.

RHP Chad Bradford (mild discomfort in right elbow) didn’t pitch the final week of the season. He will consider retirement after an injury-shortened and frustrating season.

RHP Jason Isringhausen (Tommy John elbow surgery in June 2009) expects to be ready by midseason 2010; he will be a free agent then.

RHP Troy Percival (back, shoulder) is expected to retire.

The Rays had good depth at catcher with Gregg Zaun, but they let him go. I think that was a big mistake. Zaun was not a big hitter, but he often came through in the clutch. His biggest strength was handling pitchers. Shoppach and Navarro are not nearly as good defensively as Zaun. Hopefully the Rays have a deal pending to pick up an established major league catcher. Either Navarro or Shoppach would then be an adequate back-up.

With another year of Burrell and Upton it looks like a long season ahead. Pena, Zobrist, Bartlett and Longoria may have had "career years" last year and any slippage in their production will hurt any possibility of moving up in the standings. In a tough division they may slip some.

Yep Yankees FINALLY won HUH? The best team money can buy, almost a half billion dollar team. So the Yankee fans are happy? I guess every other fan of every other team would be just as happy if they could buy their pennants just like the Yankees. OH YES Yankee fans be proud of your team, thank all of the other teams who are not competetive because they can't spend the money that the Yankees do. Thank all the other teams that lose their best players to the Yankees because they can't afford to match the ridiculous money that the Yankees spend to steal them. So in essense if in the future if MLB has to fold because the other teams can't put people in the stands who can stomach year after year of losing seasons because the Yankees buy up any little bit of talent THEN we can ALL thank the Yankees for that.
    GREAT JOB Yankees (you suck)

B.J. Upton's failed attempt to "showboat" a fly to deep center cost his team a triple. Fortunately Niemann was able to leave the runner stranded. It looks like Upton has outlived his usefulness and should be let go. He covers lots of ground in center, but his head is often not in it and he is dismal at the plate. The Rays have been patient too long!

Reading the first sentence is this report, and thinking about the Kazmir trade..

'The Rays are about to begin a stretch that is likely to define their season.'

If the third guy in the trade isn't a major player, our season is over, period! The management trows the towel and we can get ourselves ready for springtraining..

How many Floridians live in New York and Boston and ETC. Florida will never have the fan base that is in the old time baseball established cities so just be glad you can see some games and enjoy the game of baseball I grew up here and we had no team. The Yankees in the 60`s played in my home town of Haines City at the old Yale Field and I was a kid bat boy what a thrill that was. It was then their farm team and their was some great ball playing then. Yogi said it aint never over till it`s over!! When you are ahead 10-O in the 3rd inning is it over?? Only if you relax and think it`s over! Go Yogi, and GO RAYS they are my Florida Team.

Great game last night,. Pena is heating up. Now we need Longo to catch fire. For those getting down on the Rays, go back a couple of years. Then we were an embarrassment. Now, we get some respect, even from my diehard Yankees & Red Sox friends. The AL East is the toughest division in baseball. Say what you will, but the Yankees and Red Sox are playing good baseball. But, we are hanging tough. So, enjoy being in the hunt. And get out to some games. Looking forward to the Sox visiting next week. Rays fans, let's not let them turn the Trop into Fenway South.

    Hey John,

If trhe Rays are such a joke, what does that say for teams they thrash.

In our home opened against the Yankees, they got so bad that NY ran out of pitchers and had to bring in Swisher.

...or our first game in YOUR new stadium. We kicked the crap outta ya.

Take your band-wagon fan @ss outta here.

its amazing to see the complaining comments about the Rays here, they are only 3 games back of the wild card. Even if they dont make it (ill be let down) they are still fun to watch this year, look at all the teams out there that their fans continue to show support and they are 7,8 games out of the playoffs and hovering around .50 Come on Tampa Bay area!! we are 11 games over you and continue to not show up, and the ones that do complain its as if they think weve had winning seasons 10 years in a row, atleast we are winning...i was born and raised in st petersburg, ive been to over 100 rays games, maybe the critics are right pinellas area does not have enough true baseball fans. maybe tampa or orlando will change that, i dont know but ill still support them if they stay close.

I am with those folks who choose to stay away from the big market media stuff. I have believed all year, and continue to believe, that the Rays are the best team in the division this year, same as last. This is the time to make the push.

I am very disappointed, though, that the Rays did not sign their top draft picks. I understand that in baseball lower round draft picks have a higher rate of success that in other major sports. Yet, not signing two top picks sends a wrong message to those fans who have been impressed over the past few years with this organization's ability to do correctly the little things that matter. If these players were not going to be signed, they should not have been drafted. What level of homework was done here? Is it a coincidence that Boras is the agent? Rays fans need to know that the farm here will keep being fertile and that this team will do the right things to compete successfully against the teams in this division that win simply by throwing big money around.

With Burrel out this could be a blessing in disguise. We need willy to step up. We are not going to catch the Yankees. If we can just get hot we might be able to sneak into the wild card.

The Rays showed very well during the latest home stand. They got beat twice by NY, but swept the Red Sox and dispatched a tough KC team. Much credit should go to Joe Maddon. Girardi will probably win manager of the year, but Maddon should give him a serious challenge. Maddon is pushing the right buttons usually and has been very effective at managing his lineup and his bull pen. The Rays are almost always in the game and are on top of the game when it comes to extra innings. Joe Maddon deserves lots of credit1

I agree with some of the observations. Good to see a slight change in the lineup and the response of lineup to combine their hits and moving the runners instead of stranding so many.
I'd like to see a batting coach brought in from Japan to teach Pena to bunt and hit opposite field, slap style of alot the Japanese hitters. He has the power to put it in the stands on any given pitch, the shift is an opportunity to up his worth by being on base more and moving runners.
The low salary will always be an issue, if you can't put fans in the stands you have no money to pay the players. Management needs to get a little more creative to get the fans into the seats, not worry about a new stadium.
Team improvement (this will bring some harsh comments I'm sure). Trade BJ for a starting pitcher, pay Carl Crawford for his performance or trade him before he becomes a free agent. Dump Troy Percivil (sp), which they should have done last year and gotten something in a trade. Pat Burrell, if he doesn't finish strong this year get something for him in a trade (bringing him in was a costly mistake so far).
There is still a chance for a wild card spot, hopefully they can pull it together and finish strong. Playing .500 ball will not get them there. They need to be a consistanct 7-3 or 8-2 in the final stretch to make the playoffs, Boston bats have come to life again, it will be a challenge to make the playoffs.
