Steinbrenner looking forward to 2010 season

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—George Steinbrenner is looking forward to the start of the upcoming baseball season.

“I am. Aren’t you?” the 79-year-old New York Yankees owner said with a smile on Friday.

Steinbrenner spent four hours in his office at the team’s complex in Florida, where individual spring training game tickets went on sale. About 150 fans were in line when ticket windows opened.

The Yankees’ 2009 World Series championship trophy, which was taken to Steinbrenner’s home for him to see earlier this week, was on display outside the ballpark.

Steinbrenner said the Yankees are in position for what could be another “special” season this year, and that he is “feeling good.”

A group of former players taking part in a Yankees fantasy camp—including David Wells(notes), Lee Mazzilli and Mickey Rivers—spent time with Steinbrenner in his office.

Steinbrenner uses a wheelchair because of bad knees and has made few public appearances since turning over control of the team to his son Hal last year. He attended the first two games of last year’s World Series against Philadelphia but watched the Game 6 clincher from his home in Tampa.

    Mike C- Better you die than George based upon your unfounded vitriolic post. If the Boss had been able to purchase the Indians like he attempted to the MLB landscape might be very different today. Cleveland's loss was NY's gain. Most of you Yankee bashers are either mindless haters or uninformed nit wits. YOU WISH your teams ownership had the same desire to put a winner on the field every year. No, it doesn't always result in a championship but the desire is there each and every year and NY does whatever it needs to to put them in a position to win every season. Evil Empire, a term coined by Boston's jealous ownership popularized by the Sox-Met ESPN network. Save the rhetoric for Frederick. 27 in the books and the future is bright. We don't need Mauer to win, that has been proven. Let's see how greedy he isn't when it comes time to negotiate his contract. I'm sure most of you volunteer for a pay cut with your employer during this current economic crisis-not.

    Everyone Cries about George is this bad and that bad, and hurts the game.. but Fact is, He was Probably the Best Owner in ALL of sports. ALot of People SAY its all about winning, but with George it REALLY was ONLY about winning and winning and doing whatever you had to do to WIN. Now it didnt always Work, but 6 Championships under his Watch Is one Hell of a Testament to the lengths to which he was willing to go to just win. People Cry and Whine about him and the Yankees. but fact is, if The Yankees DIDNT make the obscene amounts of money they do make, there would be sumthing fundamentally wrong with that organization. And also, if any fan would say they wouldnt want a George Steinbrenner as an Owner, theyre full of Crap. Because it would me you would always be in the hunt, always get the best freeagents to help yer team, always know that the money the team makes goes back into improving the team, always feel like yer team is focused on doing whatever it had to do to put itself in position to compete for a Championship.... and THAT is what any fan should want

    First of all it is good to see the boss back in action. Mr. Steinbrenner is a very power man and is very respected in the world of sports. These owners really need to look to him on how to run a baseball team. Some of these owners need to take a look at themselves and ask the question is this the best that i can do? Let me give you an example , the Baltimore Orioles each year for the past 20 plus years what have the owner have done to improve his team. Please dont talk about Albert Belle that was a joke. It is sad for the fans to look at the talent on that team and wonder why do i support this team. The reason i mention Albert Belle because Albert did have talent but was a cancer to the team. Look i live in the state of Maryland but my team sent 1975 is always and forever be the world champions NEWYORK YANKEES period. If you want to know what it take to have a winning team just call THE BOSS . What you put in your team is what you you get out of your team. This goes out to every owner who is too cheap to spend money.

    For all the salary cap whiners...if MLB were to institute a salary cap, they'd have to do away with revenue sharing to truly level the playing field. I mean it just wouldn't be fair to tell the Yankees that they can't try to win each year and still expect them to carry half their competitors, right? Where would the small market teams be then? Bankrupt most likely. You'd only have about 10 teams left in all of MLB.

    And could you imagine if all teams were equally crappy? And they would be. Just imagine if you stretched the talent pool over every team. There's only enough really good talent out there to field a hand full of good teams. MLB would lose BIG TIME $$$$ and ALL fans would suffer. Be glad some teams care enough to put a product on the field worth watching. George is not the richest owner...he's just the most willing to invest in his product to make it better. So, instead of b*tching about the Yankees, b*tch to your team's owner about fielding a real team.

    @130 Johnq

    I have an idea for you on the salary cap issue. Why don't you start a petition. Start by getting the signatures of the owners of the small market tems you are trying to protect. Tell them they will not be getting the Revenue Sharing (welfare) that they put in their pockets anymore, instead of spending it on better players like it was intended. Then tell them how great it's going to be in the future for them, even though they will probably be spending the same as they are now, minus the welfare income.

    Then you could show them your plan to make it work like the NFL. You know, how the teams in the NFL like Oakland, Cleveland, K.C., Detroit and the other bottom dwellers really enjoy the level playing field.

    Good Luck to you.

    I'm sick of some of these posts a bunch of crap and cry-babies. Protesting wanting equality in baseball. I got something to tell these guys lifes not fair. You have to understand baseball been around over more than 100 years and is like an hierarchy, a brotherhood, a natural order. Teams of the past are to be respected and honored even if they don't exist or valued has much today. But I have only one thing to say the Yanks always tops all other teams to be remembered and commemorated. Cause its about the organization; team effort, not by one or two players, its done by everyone at top to the bottom of the order. To make a team a top quality contender every year. They won their 27th World Series over an over confident 2009 Philidelphia Phillies. The Phillies should have kept there mouth shut. Hope 28th World Series championship will be sweep. Don't care what team is representing NL.
    I don't believe in salary cap. Why? Yankees mangement will get the best prospects before anyone else does. Lure with incentives...To play in the Big Apple at Yankee Stadium. The tradition of winning championships. Chance to play the hated Red Sox, 18 times of the year. Be part of history and tradition. Come on! You got to admit the New York Yankees is the ultimate team to play for in proffessional baseball whether with or without salary cap. That is why salary cap won't work. The Yanks will still be counting trophies. If all your complaining about is the Yankees pay too much or has a high salary cap and my team can't compete with that. Your full of Elephant Dung!!! Is that enough to clarify your hatred and wish that the Yanks will never win a World Series for a salary cap. A dumb wish to me.

    I will admit that I am in favour of a salary cap in baseball. Will it mean there will be more player loyalty.... No, all other sports prove that time and again. to people who state that parity is proven because of the multiple winners of the WS, yes and no. Year after year, the Yankees, Red Sox, LAA, Phillies are at the top of the league or right near the top unless they make major stupid mistakes, or just continual bad luck like the Mets. Since only 4 teams from each league make the playoffs, it is that much harder for small market teams to make the playoffs, but when they do, it is anyones game. Teams have proven in a salary cap environment, more teams will produce payrolls near the limit. To get the cap, players are given greater free agency and teams get less in return when they leave. Great players will still get great money, marginal players get paid less. In the salary cap world, management and coaching produces greater results, not just big pocket books. The Patriots and Leafs are a perfect example of coaching and management. They represent both sides of the spectrum.

    @121 Craig Johnson

    The fact is Craig, you have no idea what Mauer will do. If he was going to just sign and stay in Minnesota, why did he hire an agent? Did he just want to drop some coin on some guy? Also, the Twins had Mauer last year, he hit .365, how did that work out for you? Do you think this guy will hit .365 every year? Check out his lifetime stats before you answer. You are aware of the fact that this is his option year and if the Twins sign him, they can still trade him, right? If they let him play out his option, the Twins get nothing for him. Remember, A-Rod signed the big contract with the Rangers and then traded him a few years later before the contract was up.

    If the Twins do sign him to the $20 million per year you suggested, what do they pay Morneau and a few other key players? Just the $20 million for Mauer will push the Twinkies payroll up to 90 Million. Then start thowing more money to the others and pretty soon you guys will be in the big leagues. Then you should win every year if it's just payroll.

    On the steroids, same message to you. You have no idea how many players were using or what they were using or when they were using it. Are you one of these guys that think if none of their players were on the list of 104 tests for 2003 they were not using?

    Wake up Mr. Johnson.

    There is a ton of truth to most of these teams pocketing the revenue. After all that's what business men do. We can never see it because they dont disclose their balance sheets and if they do how accurate is it really? Anyone can put down a paper loss etc.
    70-90 million before they play a game is very accurate. It's documented. They get another 30-40 million from MLB and we havent even mentioned ticket sales yet. So anyone who thinks the Yanks are bad for baseball are just jealous haters. They could only wish their owners put the kind of effort the Steingrabbers put into the Yanks in putting the best 9 men on the field.

    All teams can compete. 1997, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 were won by teams other than the Yankees, red sox.

    The Yankees are, and forever will be, the 2009 World Series Champions!!! 27 27 27 27 27 27 27 27 27 Chemistry. Unity. Team. The Yankees do not need Mauer. The Twins do. Boy do they!! It seems to me if Joe has created a deadline for the Twinkies to give him an extension, he's not that "AW shucks" Minnesota boy you continuously say he is. Yankee payroll was cut from 2008-09. Personally, I love free enterprise. This IS America, right?? As long as big business plays by the rules, their successes are just that. It kills other teams that EVERY player wants to be a Yankee. A salary cap would just prove it. If they can make thirty million as a Blue Jay or a Yankee....well, I think you understand. I've yet to see ANYONE bring up salary cap and know what the fck they're talking about. Hard cap? Soft? Incentive-laden? Front-end loaded? Back-end? Football has one and the same teams keep winning. Basketball has one and the same teams keep winning. Baseball has had more parity in the last ten years than the other two. Maybe hockey, too. Keep crying, douchebags. Your tears are my joy. Peace.

    any real baseball fan would know that the apparent smaller market teams are getting around 70 - 90 million dollars per year from revenue sharing and other benefits, before they even play their first game. Let alone the revenue that they make from the actual games. Now lets think, how many teams have less than a 70-90 million dollar payroll? What if they used that 70-90 million dollars to put a winning team out on the field? The amount of money just sitting under small market owner's beds is the real highway robbery. A maximum salary should not be proposed, a minimum salary should be proposed.

    And I highly recommend reading ESPN's Adam Schefter for baseball knowledge. He complains about this as well

    # 96 , you actually think Joe Mauer will leave the Twins, No way he will. He will show, what people should do and be loyal to your teams. He will get a excellent contract here, like 15-20 million a season. Very few people show loyalty anymore. Puckett, Hrbek Also stayed with the team as they were offered more else where. That is team loyalty. The Yankees overpays the players the players as they are in a big market, but nobody is worth that kind of money. That is what you call is GREEDY. All the players that were on STEROIDS should give the majority of their money back. That shows they only worry about making the Bucks. They get there money anyway. How many world champions have the yankees won in the last 10 years? They should win it Every Year, for what they Pay Out.
