BTW - what makes proponents of a salary cap think that the owners of clubs that don't invest in their teams to begin with are suddenly going to start if a salary cap is in place? What will it change?

Philly never gets any respect in the sporting world or otherwise. I've been to New York several times and there is NOTHING special @ all about it. In short, It's a dump and It's a filthy disgusting city filled with arrogant ppl. Philly Is not as bad and @ least we have an identity. We are known for our music and culture, food, and, quite honestly, I wouldn't live anywhere else in the whole world. If any Yank-off fans expect Phils fans to line up for a plunge off the Walt Whitman Bridge, you're sorely mistaken. We're the Team of Ten Thousand Losses as the media keeps reminding us! We've been through worse than losing a World Series to a team with a Federal Reserve-size budget.

As for TV ratings, last year's would have been better if they didn't wait until NINE O'CLOCK AT NIGHT to show the games. At least Foxy TV has learned that lesson (I hope).

Props to the Yankees, though I am a Phillies fan. The payroll thing doesn't matter because 1) those are the rules right now; and, 2) you still have to win the games. Now, notwithstanding the better TV ratings this year (with the same Phillies that drew last year's low ratings), bring on a salary cap and serious drug enforcement before the game completely dies.

Alright first of all petite used steroids. That is why he was so good. I was avg this year. He had a high era in the WS but got the win. Joba isn't even a starter. A-roid you bought, Texiera you bought, CC you bought, Burnett you bought, Damon you bought, harriston jr you bought, Nady who is hurt you bought, Hideki you bought. All the differnce makes this year you bought or else you would have been just like you were last year and that is not in the playoffs. I am a phillies fan, but you guys had the better team this year and you beat us. Good job. Think of all the other teams out there who can't afford what the yankees can afford. Let me give you a prime example. The Dallas cowboys in the 90's had all the money because a wealthy oil boy named jerry jones. He spent a hell of a lot of money to keep all of those players together. Now that there is a salary cap he can't do it anymore. Yankees are ruining baseball because nobody wants to see a team who wins every year. Think about it if you guys were to go out and get roy hallady and jason bay, garland, matt holiday. Wouldn't you be like wow this is unfair. Thats exactly what you did last year. The think is eventually your going to have very empty ball parks. People can't afford the ridiculous priices for your tickets. You guys couldn't sell out if your life depended on it. Its a real shame. The fans are phonies. You don't have 27 championships, you have 7. 2 in the 70's and 3 in the 90's and 2 in the 00's. The ones before that were before baseball allowed minorities in the league. I don't count any of those. The league was so diluted back then it isn't even funny. NEW YORK -- Sunday night's Game 4 was the highest-rated World Series game in five years.

The Yankees' 7-4 win over the Phillies drew a 13.5 fast national rating and 22 share on Fox. That's up 45 percent from last year's Phillies-Rays Game 4.

Fox said Monday it's the best rating for a non-decisive Game 4 since a 13.6/23 for a 12-inning Yankees-Marlins game in 2003. It's also the best rating for any World Series game since 2004 when the Red Sox finished their four-game sweep of the Cardinals to end their 86-year championship drought.

You mean money wasn't involved? a A lot of the old time players were poor country boys who found a way off the farm. they were exploited because they didn't have the business savvy and agents to look out for their interests.
And by the way, I remember when ML had ten teams in each league. Imagine if your team was in last place, like the late '60's Yanks I was so mush fun. Boston wasn't much better in ninth place.

Every one of you whiners that cries about the Yankees "buying" championships sound exactly like every third world country that cries how the United States of America has an "unfair" advantage in the world. The Steinbrenners are business people and they spend, or invest money where they are likely to get a return. They money spent is the money earned by the Yankees. It does not come out of their pockets and the Yankees are not subsidized by other Steinbrenner businesses. They spend what they bring in. Yes, the Yankees buy players, but are you telling me that the rest of the teams get their players for free? The difference is that NY can spend more because they bring in more. Any why do they bring in more? Because people pay to see the Yankees. Look at the TV ratings from that incredibly intriguing Phillies vs. Devil Rays series last year. The best thing that could have happened in baseball this year was for NY to go to the series -- win or lose, because when the Yankees are there -- PEOPLE WATCH, love 'em or hate 'em. There are some very wealthy businessmen in this country who could buy the Washington Nationals and do the same thing that George did when he bought the Yankees - invest and make them champions. Why don't they do it? Easy answer, the NY Yankees always have been and always will be America's team.

Quit crying about the capitalism that the Yankees employ. Yes, they have more money, but that's what happens with successful businesses. You all sound like Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez crying about the evil United States of America.

The problem is Bud "the moron" Selig doesn't have the balls to press charges. this is the same guy that didn't know 70% of his sport is on PED and steroids....gimme a break. The facts are clear. MLB is the only major US sport without a salary cap. The others, NBA, NHL, and the new #1 US sport, the NFL, all have salary caps. Go read the numbers, each of the leagues are on the rise, with increased fan bases, bigger TV audiences, and new rivalries forming every few years. NOT WITH BASEBALL. EVERY YEAR ITS THE SAME BULLSHEET! YANKEES SPEND A BIILLION versus the rest of the league. Who losses? The fan......except the Yanee fan. They get to brag for a few months. Everybody loses. Organizations like Pittsburgh, KC, Florida, Texas, virtually everywhere but LA, Boston, and NY suffers. And what's the Yankee fan's view? Everyone else can go scratch their azz.

It's ok, because eventually the smaller market teams will fold and the Yankees will be playing in a 10 team league. I for one miss the days when players played for the game, for the fan, for the prestige. Now it's all about the money. To all those idiotic Yankee fans who proclaim, "if your owners didn't put the money in their pockets, and instead put it back into the team, you would be equally as competitive." Wake up.......better yet, take some sleeping pills and operate some heavy machinery. If you idiots think the owners pocketed the money before this insane increase in salaries, refreshments, and ticket prices, how much do you think they're pocketing now? Make it easy, just move the decimal over to the right a few spaces. Parity keeps things in check by keeping each team equally competitive. The Yankees were great before the draft was adopted by MLB. Afterwards they spiraled to the abyss. Then came Curt Flood and "free agency"..... and the Yankees decided, it's a lot easier to just buy the best talent EVERY OTHER team's farm system has developed. Yeah, that's a bright future for MLB.

84 - Be thankful for the YANKS for @#$%. If the YANKS would go away, and their money wasn't there to bail a few woeful francises out, I'd rather see it that way. MLB minus the YANKS would be a step in the right direction. IF a few other teams go away too, oh well.

salary cap is a joke! you people have been crying about a cap for years its never going to happen w/out an act of congress (hope they didn't see that) LOL
major leagues are in a good place ,if your specific franchises would spend the money the YANKS are paying out in luxury tax on talent, instead of pocketing the money ,you might be able to compete!
Listen the YANKS do what it takes to win , winning is good for building a fan base which in turn fills the seat s ,not only in YANKS stadium but in every stadium they visit. why do you think their is no salary cap? they put restrictions on the YANKS that luxury goes away! be thankful the YANKS are around to bail your bullsh-t organizations out!!!

Good thing the NFL did not have the Sunday night game on NBC as Minnesota at Green Bay huh? Not sure if it is a polite agreement, or whatever, but that game on head to head with the WS would have hurt the ratings. Personally since every game played in this WS yields the obligatory "ratings" story, I suspect lies,lies, lies. Baseball just isn't that exciting. Several posts here indicating how great and mighty the Yanks are, and how integral they are to the MLB?! Well, they have the Championships to prove their greatness, but the league would survive without them.

Cubs vs Red Sox would get higher ratings, but 11 or 12 is pretty good for baseball, the super bowl gets like a 27 thou.
